Cambridge Audio’s EXA100 pairs Class AB control with an expansive, precisely layered soundstage, delivering taut bass, focused voices and effortless scale. What Hi-Fi? highlights its clean, spacious poise, while The Ear celebrates its immersive authority. With HDMI eARC, balanced XLR and extensive digital connectivity, it is a confident hub for demanding speakers and modern two-channel systems.

— What Hi-Fi

"The EXA 100 has the scale but not the Finesse and that's the tradeoff"

— A British Audiophile

Pros

Large, open soundstage with precise placement and strong separation of instruments and voices.

Powerful, controlled delivery with taut bass and composure at high volumes, including with demanding speakers.

Exceptionally versatile connectivity, including HDMI eARC, XLR, USB-B, digital inputs, subwoofer output and power-amp mode.

Cons

Low-level dynamics and rhythmic drive are less nuanced than leading rivals.

Treble can verge on brightness or sibilance with lively loudspeaker partners.

No built-in phono stage for direct turntable connection.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100

Reviewers consistently find the EXA100 powerful, clean and composed, with a large, precisely organised presentation. Its strengths are scale, control, tonal evenness and strong bass authority, although a few listeners find it slightly restrained with low-level shifts and not quite the last word in fine-detail retrieval.

Transparency Resolution

91/100

What Hi-Fi praises clarity and refinement, with crisp detail, definite note edges and strongly focused voices. The Ear similarly hears delicate detail and preserved recording timbre, though A British Audiophile says the EXA100 is not the final word in extracting the smallest recorded details.

Tonal Balance Musicality

91/100

StereoNET describes a smooth, even-handed frequency balance and carefully neutral tonality, while Audiophiliac hears neutral-to-slightly-warm character and an engaging presentation. Several reviewers praise smooth, fatigue-free treble and natural vocals, though StereoNET found the top end close to bright with one speaker pairing.

Dynamics

92/100

Pursuit Perfect System repeatedly highlights the amplifier's lively, powerful and controlled delivery, with strong, taut bass and notably improved dynamics. StereoNET finds its headroom considerable and its composure intact through large changes in level, while What Hi-Fi would like more low-level dynamic subtlety and drive.

Soundstage Imaging

94/100

The EXA100 receives repeated praise for an open, wide and deeply layered soundstage. What Hi-Fi notes precise placement of instruments and voices, The Ear hears stable orchestral positioning with generous space around performers, and StereoNET finds convincing scale even on dense large-scale recordings.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

91/100

What Hi-Fi calls the EXA100 well built with a high-quality feel, while Pursuit Perfect System praises the robust volume control and thoughtful industrial design. Reviewers also point to the substantial toroidal transformer, heavy-duty heatsinks, four-layer circuit boards and carefully considered protection and grounding arrangements.

Features Connectivity

95/100

Connectivity is unusually comprehensive: balanced and multiple single-ended analogue inputs, USB-B, optical and coaxial digital inputs, Bluetooth aptX HD, HDMI eARC, headphone output, pre-out, subwoofer output and two speaker-output sets. HDMI eARC integration, power-amplifier mode, dual speaker zones and the option to alter grounding add genuine system flexibility; the principal omission is a phono stage.

Value for Money

94/100

At around £1,999, reviewers consider the EXA100 highly competitive in a crowded part of the market. The Ear calls it great value and an easy Best Buy, Audiophilepure says little at the price offers as much capability, and StereoNET regards it as one of the best integrated amplifiers in its class.
