AT-OC9XEN

The AT-OC9XEN Dual Moving Coil cartridge with nude elliptical stylus is designed to provide outstanding channel separation. The Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) coils ensure pure audio transmission and are aligned in a reverse V-shaped formation to exert less pressure on the stylus, thereby minimizing distortion.

Audio quality is further enhanced by a rigid aluminum body that reduces resonance, a neodymium magnet and pure iron yoke that increase the magnetic energy, and the low-mass nude elliptical stylus on an aluminum cantilever that accurately tracks the record groove. The cartridge body has been pre-threaded, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell or integral tonearm with just two screws – no nuts required.

Please Note: AT-OC9XEN’s stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to properly service your moving coil cartridge.

Professional Reviews 88/100

Rating for AT-OC9XEN

Nicely Roasted

Sound Quality

90/100

Build Quality

94/100

Features Usability

86/100

Value for Money

82/100

Fast, highly articulate and impressively revealing, the AT-OC9XEN earns praise from What Hi-Fi? for its clarity, agile tracking and wide, layered soundstage. Its sturdy aluminium body and threaded mounting make setup easy, while its light-footed balance suits systems that value precision and separation over sheer force.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"It’s a talented performer with an enviable degree of precision and openness for the money, though not the most authoritative presentation."

What Hi-Fi?

Pros

Excellent clarity, detail and precision with a fast, agile presentation.

Wide, stable and well-layered soundstage with confident imaging.

Superb build quality, with a sturdy machined aluminium body and threaded mounting holes for easier installation.

&

Cons

Lacks some muscularity and dynamic punch compared with rivals.

Can sound a touch light and less authoritative in the low end and overall balance.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 90/100

Reviewers praise the AT-OC9XEN for its clarity, agility, and fine detail, with a tonal balance that is lively and slightly on the light side rather than heavy or warm. The main caveat is that it can miss some muscularity and dynamic weight compared with rivals, so it sounds precise and revealing more than forceful.

Overall Sound

88/100

What Hi-Fi describes it as an 'excellent performer' with 'excellent detail and precision' and a responsive character with little blur or overhang. The only repeated reservation is that the treble is a touch light and the presentation lacks some refinement and weight versus competitors.

Tracking Retrieval

92/100

The cartridge is said to track 'multiple instrumental strands without confusion,' with each note drawn carefully, and it brings out deep bass texture with confidence. Reviewers emphasize its agility and precision through the frequency range, which points to very strong groove retrieval and stable tracking.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

Stereo imaging is described as 'pleasingly stable and expansive,' with a 'wide, layered and focused soundstage' once properly set up. The review also says that stability remains as the music gets more demanding, which supports a very confident spatial presentation.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 86/100

As a moving-coil cartridge, it needs compatible phono gain and loading, so it is naturally more system-dependent than a typical plug-and-play moving magnet. On the plus side, reviewers note the threaded body and easy alignment, which make installation and setup friendlier than many MC designs.

Tonearm Compatibility

86/100

Its threaded body and easy-to-align shape help with mounting, and the review presents it as straightforward to fit in a headshell. At the same time, it remains a moving-coil design that requires suitable phono-stage matching, so it is best suited to systems already prepared for that.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

94/100

Build and finish earn strong praise, with the cartridge described as 'superb' and the aluminium body as sturdy, precisely machined, and easy to align in the headshell. The threaded mounting holes are also highlighted as a practical touch that makes fitting less fiddly.

Value for Money

82/100

What Hi-Fi says it is excellent in some ways but 'doesn’t deliver everything we’d want in a cartridge at this price,' which signals some price pressure against stronger rivals. The value case is therefore respectable rather than compelling, especially when compared with competitors that bring more weight or dynamic contrast.
