AT-OC9XEN

The AT-OC9XEN Dual Moving Coil cartridge with nude elliptical stylus is designed to provide outstanding channel separation. The Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) coils ensure pure audio transmission and are aligned in a reverse V-shaped formation to exert less pressure on the stylus, thereby minimizing distortion.

Audio quality is further enhanced by a rigid aluminum body that reduces resonance, a neodymium magnet and pure iron yoke that increase the magnetic energy, and the low-mass nude elliptical stylus on an aluminum cantilever that accurately tracks the record groove. The cartridge body has been pre-threaded, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell or integral tonearm with just two screws – no nuts required.

Please Note: AT-OC9XEN’s stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to properly service your moving coil cartridge.

Overall Score 83/100

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

The precision and clarity of this moving-coil cartridge stand out immediately, with a wide, stable soundstage and finely traced bass that keeps complex music organized. What Hi-Fi? praises its agility, detail and superb build, while noting a lighter tonal balance and less dynamic heft than rivals. It’s a refined, well-made choice for listeners who value insight over muscle.

What Hi-Fi?

"We’re impressed by the Audio-Technica’s build."

Pros

  • Delivers impressive clarity, detail and agility with strong separation of complex musical lines.
  • Build quality is superb, with a sturdy machined aluminium body and user-friendly threaded mounting.
  • Creates a wide, layered and stable soundstage once properly set up.

&

Cons

  • The presentation can feel a little light tonally and lacks some refinement at the top end.
  • Dynamics and low-end authority are less forceful than competing cartridges at this price.
  • Overall value is only fair, with the performance not fully matching the asking price.

Sound Quality

84/100

Overall sound is consistently praised for its agility, detail, and precision, with especially strong retrieval of musical information. Reviewers do note a slightly light tonal balance and less muscular dynamic contrast than some rivals, so this is clearly excellent rather than unreservedly top-tier.

Overall Sound

84/100

What Hi-Fi calls it an 'excellent performer in some ways' and highlights its agile, responsive presentation with 'little time for overhang or blurring.' The tonal balance is a touch light and refinement in the top end is not perfect, so the sound is very good but not fully sumptuous or weighty.

Tracking Retrieval

86/100

Tracking and retrieval are a clear strength: the cartridge 'tracks multiple instrumental strands without confusion' and delivers 'excellent detail and precision.' The reviewer also praises its ability to keep notes distinct as music becomes more demanding, which supports a strong score here.

Soundstage Imaging

84/100

Stereo imaging is described as 'pleasingly stable and expansive,' with a 'wide, layered and focused soundstage' once properly set up. That is very positive, though the review stops short of truly holographic or category-leading language, so this lands in the solidly strong range.

Build Quality

91/100

Build quality is repeatedly praised as a standout feature: the cartridge has a 'superb build and finish,' a 'sturdy aluminium body,' and is 'machined with precision.' Threaded mounting holes and the easy-to-align shape also suggest careful, user-friendly execution rather than mere cosmetic quality.

Features Usability

87/100

The cartridge is described as easy to align in a headshell, and the threaded boltholes make installation less fiddly than many MC designs. Its practical fit is good for users who want a well-behaved half-inch mount MC, though system matching still matters because it remains a moving-coil cartridge that benefits from proper setup and phono-stage compatibility.

Compatibility and setup are good rather than universal: the threaded body, easy alignment, and straightforward fitting are clear positives. As with most MC cartridges, it still rewards proper arm and phono-stage matching, but the review frames installation as relatively painless rather than fussy.

Value for Money

78/100

Value is the main caveat. What Hi-Fi says it is 'an excellent performer in some ways' but 'doesn’t deliver everything we’d want in a cartridge at this price,' which reads as mild-to-clear concern rather than outright poor value. In its price class, it is respectable but not a standout bargain against competing cartridges.
