AT-OC9XSH

The AT-OC9XSH Dual Moving Coil cartridge with Shibata stylus is designed to provide outstanding channel separation. The Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) coils ensure pure audio transmission and are aligned in a reverse V-shaped formation to exert less pressure on the stylus, thereby minimizing distortion.

Audio quality is further enhanced by a rigid aluminum body that reduces resonance, a neodymium magnet and premium permendur yoke that increase the magnetic energy, and the nude Shibata stylus on a boron cantilever that tracks the record groove with incredible accuracy, delivering rich, full-range audio and high transient response. The cartridge body has been pre-threaded, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell or integral tonearm with just two screws – no nuts required.

Please Note: AT-OC9XSH’s stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to properly service your moving coil cartridge.

Rating for [object Object]

Deliciously Crispy

With its Shibata stylus and boron cantilever, the AT-OC9XSH delivers a fast, open, and highly resolving presentation that still feels controlled. HiFi News hears rare clarity and huge insight, while Positive Feedback praises its versatile drive, low noise floor, and finely sorted imaging. It’s a serious moving coil for listeners chasing detail without sacrificing musical flow.

Positive Feedback — John Hoffman

"Audio-Technica is giving today's vinylophile the best deal in the world of analog."

Pros

  • Exceptional clarity and detail retrieval with a controlled, bright-leaning tonal balance.
  • Wide, well-defined soundstage with strong imaging and precise separation of voices and instruments.
  • Excellent tracking of grooves, low surface-noise sensitivity, and impressive composure on difficult records.
  • Strong value for a well-engineered moving coil with premium materials and parts.

&

Cons

  • Can lean a little bright, which may not suit already forward systems.
  • Soundstage can occasionally show a slight hole in the center.
  • Best results depend on proper arm and phono-stage matching, as with most low-output moving coils.

Sound Quality

91/100

Weighted average of sub-criteria below.

Overall Sound

91/100

Reviewers consistently describe the OC9XSH as remarkably clear, versatile, and musically satisfying. Positive Feedback calls it 'an excellent all around performer' and 'remarkable,' while HiFi News praises its 'clarity that's not just striking but rare at this price' and 'detail and insight' as 'downright spectacular.'

Tracking Retrieval

93/100

This is a major strength in the reviews: both writers emphasize refined tracing, low noise, and strong retrieval of subtle information. Phrases like 'unerring precision' through fast, intricate passages, 'remarkably low noise floor,' and being 'untroubled by vinyl surface noise and general dust' support an excellent tracking score.

Soundstage Imaging

89/100

Stereo imaging is praised as broad, clean, and well organized, with 'an excellent three dimensional sound-stage' and instruments occupying 'a sharply defined space.' HiFi News also describes a wide presentation that fills the space between the speakers, though it notes an occasional 'slight hole in its centre,' keeping this just shy of top-tier.

Build Quality

90/100

The cartridge is repeatedly presented as a carefully engineered, high-grade design rather than a mere spec-sheet exercise. Reviewers point to the milled aluminum body, boron cantilever, Shibata stylus, neodymium magnets, and OCC copper coils as evidence of serious execution, but the language is strong-positive rather than truly superlative.

Features Usability

90/100

Tonearm compatibility / system fit.

This is a low-output moving coil that will ask for a suitable phono stage or head amp, but within a properly matched setup it appears broadly cooperative. Its 2.0 g standard tracking force and conventional half-inch mount make setup familiar, while reviewers did not suggest unusual fussiness beyond normal MC matching requirements.

Value for Money

94/100

The value commentary is exceptionally enthusiastic: Positive Feedback explicitly calls it 'the best deal in the world of analog' and says 'nobody' else can offer this mix of features at $649. That kind of 'giant killer' language, plus praise for its price-class performance, supports a very strong value score.
