AT-OC9XEB

The AT-OC9XEB Dual Moving Coil cartridge with bonded elliptical stylus is designed to provide outstanding channel separation. The Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting (PCOCC) coils ensure pure audio transmission and are aligned in a reverse V-shaped formation to exert less pressure on the stylus, thereby minimizing distortion.

Audio quality is further enhanced by a rigid aluminum body that reduces resonance, a neodymium magnet and pure iron yoke that increase the magnetic energy, and the bonded elliptical stylus on an aluminum cantilever that accurately tracks the record groove. The cartridge body has been pre-threaded, enabling it to be mounted to a headshell or integral tonearm with just two screws – no nuts required.

Please Note: AT-OC9XEB’s stylus assembly is not field-replaceable, but Audio-Technica offers a fee-based Moving Coil Exchange Program to properly service your moving coil cartridge.

Overall Score 86/100

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

The spacious soundstage and smooth, slightly warm presentation make this moving-coil cartridge stand out, with Ed Kobesky praising its generous detail, easy setup, and refined build. It balances above-average resolution with a lively, musical flow, delivering a convincing step up for medium-mass tonearms and compatible MC phono stages.

Positive Feedback — Ed Kobesky

"It has a lot to give."

Pros

  • Expansive soundstage with strong spatial scale for the price.
  • Retrieves fine detail with good delineation while staying smooth and engaging.
  • Well-built, neatly finished body with threaded mounting that simplifies installation.

&

Cons

  • Needs a compatible moving-coil phono stage and suitable gain/loading to perform properly.
  • Can be less forgiving with surface noise and sibilant pressings than more refined stylus designs.

Sound Quality

85/100

Weighted average of sub-criteria below.

Overall Sound

84/100

Reviewers describe the OC9XEB as slightly warm-ish, smooth, and musically engaging, with a pleasing balance between "big fun" and above-average resolution. The tonal character is praised for its generosity and flow rather than forensic neutrality, which fits a solidly positive mid-80s score.

Tracking Retrieval

85/100

Ed Kobesky says it "sorted out various strands of music with delineation and deftness" and retrieved "more information" than expected for the price. The review also notes some vulnerability to surface noise and sibilant pressings, so this is good performance rather than elite, but still clearly above average for the class.

Soundstage Imaging

87/100

The cartridge is repeatedly praised for a "generous soundstage" that is described as a standout at this price point. Imaging and spatial presentation are among its strongest traits in the review, supporting a high-80s score.

Build Quality

89/100

The cartridge is described as slickly made, extremely well finished, and packaged with the same upscale ownership experience as more expensive models in the range. Tapped screw threads are called out as a practical build advantage, reducing mounting hassle and reinforcing the impression of thoughtful execution.

Features Usability

85/100

Tonearm compatibility / system fit.

The reviewer says the cartridge behaved like a fairly compliant design, was perfectly at home on a Technics tonearm, and should suit many medium-mass arms. As a moving-coil cartridge it still requires appropriate phono-stage matching, but in practical arm fit terms it appears broadly accommodating for normal half-inch setups.

Value for Money

86/100

The review explicitly calls it a "decent value for the money" and places its performance at a compelling level around the $259 price point. It is presented as competitive against cartridges in the same range, with enough sonic and build quality to justify the asking price without sounding like a bargain-bin steal.
