The AE509 is a slim-line floor-standing loudspeaker with compact dimensions, suitable for medium to large sized rooms. Similar to the AE500 comparison, the AE509 offers higher levels of performance and finish than its 300 Series equivalent. The 500 Series features our newly developed carbon fibre tweeters and mid/bass drivers, designed to match the pistonic power and accuracy of our legendary ceramic aluminium drivers but with improved self-damping for a smoother, more transparent sound.

Offering unparalleled levels of performance, quality and value the result is an audio product with clean, uncluttered lines delivering a thrilling and powerful presentation discerning Acoustic Energy owners have come to expect for over 30 years.

The slim-line cabinets are finished in Piano Gloss Black, Piano Gloss White or American Walnut wood veneer finishes. Solid Aluminium bars are supplied to ensure rigid floor-coupling and maximum stability, whilst the stiffness of the metal structure reduces the room to speaker interaction.

Nicely Roasted

Fast, tuneful and unusually revealing for its size, the AE500 pairs new carbon-fibre drivers with a refined WDT tweeter to deliver a transparent midrange and airy treble while remaining smooth and musical. Reviewers note an expansive soundstage and tight timing that belies the compact cabinet; praised by David Price and The Ear for exceptional performance-to-price.

The Ear

"This is a review I have delayed writing for the simple reason that I did not want to return the product to the manufacturer because I was enjoying it so much."

Pros

  • Transparent, neutral midrange and refined treble that reveal detail without harshness.
  • Impressive, spacious soundstage and precise imaging that exceed expectations for a compact standmount.
  • Well-engineered, solid cabinet and quality finishes with effective resonance suppression.
  • Exceptional value — audiophile-level performance at the sub-£1,000 price band.

&

Cons

  • Limited low-frequency extension compared with floorstanders; bass-heavy genres may need a sub.
  • Macro headroom is limited — dynamic crescendos can compress at very high listening levels.
  • Benefits from a capable amplifier (reviewers recommend ~60W+) to play loudly and confidently.

Sound Quality

90/100

Bass

89/100

Reviewers consistently note bass extension to ~45–50Hz from a compact 125mm driver and a slot port; described as 'audibly achievable' to 50Hz and 'propulsive and tuneful.' Not for bass junkies without a sub, but delivers exceptional low-frequency performance relative to its cabinet size and ported design.

Mid

90/100

Multiple reviews praise a neutral, realistic midband with good presence and clarity (3–5kHz), drawing narrative detail without sounding overly bright. Reviewers describe an 'effortless and cohesive' midrange and a clear presentation of vocals and analogue soundtracks.

Treble

91/100

The new 25mm carbon fibre tweeter with WDT waveguide is repeatedly lauded as delicate, refined and free of sibilance. Reviews call the treble 'clean, crisp, tuneful' and 'classy,' delivering air and detail without harshness.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

Reviewers report an expansive soundstage 'way beyond their physical size,' with good left-right width, focused imaging and notable depth perspective. Stereo imaging and venue nuance communication are highlighted as strengths at the price.

Dynamics

88/100

Characterised as fast, engaging and rhythmically able — 'dives into music with heady abandon' — yet some compression at very high volumes and limited macro-headroom compared to larger floorstanders. Excellent transient response and timing for the form factor.

Build Quality

90/100

Robust construction using 18mm RSC (constrained-layer damping) panels, solid terminals and a well-executed cabinet; reviewers call it 'well-built, skilfully engineered' with premium finishes. Weight and bracing indicate good resonance control for the price.

Features Connectivity

80/100

Passive single-post bookshelf baseline applied (80). Reviews note solid speaker terminals and the innovative rear letterbox (slot) port, but no bi-wire/bi-amp or digital features to alter the connectivity score.

Value for Money

94/100

Strong consensus that the AE500 represents outstanding value — called an 'audiophile bargain', 'incredible value' and 'best all-round standmount at this price.' Reviewers explicitly praise the performance-to-price ratio (sub-£1,000 positioning) and recommend it versus peers.
