YOUR GATEWAY TO PERFECT SOUND REPRODUCTION

DAC, AUDIO PROCESSOR, AND NETWORK RENDERER

Unveil the true sound of the audio material with the DAC502-MK2 digital-to-analog converter. The DAC502-MK2 goes beyond simply reproducing your sound — it also lets you correct frequency imbalances in your room and adjust the sound to better suit your preference.

Latest firmware: version 2.8.1 adds the Qobuz Connect featurewww.qobuz.com

ACCURATE AND ADJUSTABLE

The DAC502-MK2 is not only one of the best digital-to-analog converter available on the market today, offering an accurate and soulful presentation of the audio.

It also includes user-configurable settings, from room EQ and de-essing to crosstalk cancellation, dynamics compensation, loudness control, and even vinyl emulation.

HIGH CONNECTIVITY

The DAC502-MK2 comes with digital inputs in numerous formats and has both balanced and unbalanced analog outputs. All standard sampling frequencies up to 384 kHz plus DSD x64 and x128 are supported.

Furthermore, the unit functions as a preamp, headphone amp, and a streamer (UPnP/ROON).

The DAC502-MK2 also seamlessly integrates with the JPLAY iOS app – you can enjoy your favorite tracks from Qobuz, Tidal, and your local collection, all in one unified library.

The standard two-channel unit can be upgraded to the MK2 version. The MK2 has in its 2 channel mode a superior performance compared to the standard DAC502.A description of the MK2 version can be downloaded from here.

DAC502 product comparison

The DAC502-MK2 and its compact sibling DAC501-MK2 are identical, apart from the latter using a larger enclosure and an additional 4-pin headphone socket at the back of the unit. Both models are offered in aluminum or black finishes.

The DAC502-MK2 includes all the audio processing features of the DSP502 — so one could view the latter unit as a DAC502-MK2 without the D/A conversion.

PURIST SIGNAL PATH

To achieve its exceptional performance specifications, the DAC502-MK2 uses dual 32-bit D/A converter chips, with two conversion channels per audio channel.

It also uses an internal high-precision/low jitter clock generator for ultra-stable clocking of the D/A converter section.

PROFESSIONAL PROCESSING

The built-in audio processing is based on the same trailblazing algorithms that are used in Weiss Engineering’s professional audio tools.

So with the DAC502-MK2, you can adjust the audio using the same professional-grade algorithms that were used to mix and master the original recording.

EASE OF USE

The DAC502-MK2 comes with an IR remote control which can be used to select the active input and output, the DSP audio processing presets, and switch power on and off.

Furthermore, it is possible to control and configure the DAC502-MK2 via a web browser, which adds detailed control of the DSP processing and preset management.

Overall Score 88/100

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

With dead-neutral precision and a remarkably clean, high-resolution presentation, the DAC502 impresses as a serious digital hub. SoundStage Solo praised its open, fast, transparent character, while HiFi Advice highlighted its no-nonsense control, sharp imaging, and convincing dynamics. Its DSP and streaming flexibility make it especially compelling for exacting systems.

SoundStage Solo — Tom Waters

"The DAC502 was open, fast, transparent and detailed."

Pros

  • Highly neutral, transparent, and revealing sound with excellent timbre and transient precision.
  • Strong dynamics, deep control, and precise imaging with superb separation and layering.
  • Very flexible feature set with Roon Ready/UPnP streaming, web control, headphone outputs, and extensive DSP tools.

&

Cons

  • The presentation can lean analytical or slightly dry, especially with more revealing settings.
  • Room EQ and DSP features can be complex to set up and are not especially user-friendly.
  • The front display is small and can be hard to read unless you are close to the unit.

Sound Quality

91/100

Weighted average of sub-criteria below. Reviewers consistently describe the DAC502 as open, fast, transparent, detailed, and highly neutral, with very clean delivery and no harshness or etch. The overall consensus is clearly top-tier, though the language stops short of truly rarefied superlatives, so a low-90s score is a strong fit.

Tonal Balance and Musicality

90/100

Reviewers repeatedly call the DAC502 dead-neutral, highly transparent, and very smooth, with 'perfect timbre' and a presentation that is 'natural' and 'non-hyped.' It is also praised for avoiding harshness or excessive analytical glare, which supports a high score for tonal balance and listenability.

Resolution and Detail

93/100

This is one of the DAC502’s clearest strengths: reviewers call it detailed, highly revealing, and note that the micro-detail, separation, and layering are 'amazing' and 'superb.' Multiple reviews emphasize precise transients and the ability to expose what is on the recording without editorializing, which justifies a very strong score.

Digital Performance

89/100

The DAC502 is praised for a black, quiet, strain-free presentation with zero background noise, excellent jitter elimination, and extremely stable operation. Reviewers repeatedly note that it sounds clean, controlled, and free of digital artifacts, though the comments are more about polished neutrality and stability than outright category-defining digital magic.

Build Quality

87/100

Build quality is described positively across reviews: thick aluminum and stainless-steel construction, a rigid chassis, and a precision rotary encoder. The power supply is also explicitly well executed, with a non-switching design, separate regulation by channel, toroidal transformers, and zero-crossing switching, all of which support a solidly high score.

Features Connectivity

90/100

The DAC502 is very well equipped: balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, USB, AES/EBU, coax, optical, Ethernet streaming via UPnP/DLNA, and Roon Ready support. It also adds a touchscreen display, remote control, web control, variable output levels, headphone outputs, and extensive DSP functions, placing it firmly in the upper tier for functionality without overselling it as reference-level perfection.

Value for Money

81/100

The reviews acknowledge that the DAC502 is expensive, around the ten-thousand-euro mark or roughly US/AU$12k-13.7k, but they stop short of calling it overpriced or a bad buy. With phrases like 'still attainable' and no strong positive value praise such as 'worth it' or 'great value,' this lands in a neutral-to-slightly-justified premium zone rather than a value standout.
