Value for Money

VPI’s Shyla moving-coil cartridge delivers a natural midrange, deep bass, and finely resolved treble with an inviting sense of musical flow. Bob Grossman found its lively dynamics, convincing timbre, and clear imaging equally at home with dense orchestral works, jazz, and rock. Advanced damping and surefooted tracking complete an impressively balanced analog voice.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"The sound is articulate, emotionally involving, musical and balanced."

— Enjoy The Music

Pros

Natural, balanced presentation combines deep lows, detailed highs, convincing timbre, and strong emotional involvement.

Tracks challenging passages confidently while delivering clear imaging, depth, separation, and responsive dynamics.

Modified, internally damped hybrid body is designed to control resonance and reduce distortion.

Particularly complementary with VPI turntables and tonearms, with performance the reviewer considered excellent for the price.

Cons

Its strongest documented system synergy is with VPI tables and arms; the review provides limited evidence of compatibility across a broad range of non-VPI setups.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100

The review finds the Shyla articulate, emotionally involving, musical and well balanced, with a natural midrange focus, strong deep bass and detailed highs. It is also praised for lively dynamics, convincing timbre and a coherent presentation of both ensembles and soloists.

Overall Sound

93/100

Bob Grossman describes a balanced, articulate and emotionally engaging sound that exceeded his expectations at the price. He highlights excellent detail, dynamics and timbre, alongside a natural musical voice with substantial bass and detailed treble.

Tracking Retrieval

91/100

The Shyla is reported to track challenging passages and grooves very well on a range of test records. The review also credits it with excellent detail retrieval and an ability to preserve the complete perspective of an ensemble or solo performer.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

The review reports clear imaging, good presence and engaging liveliness. It also notes depth of image, suggesting a spatial presentation that remains involving rather than merely sharply outlined.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 83/100

Tonearm compatibility and system fit are most clearly addressed in the context of VPI turntables and arms.

Tonearm Compatibility

83/100

The reviewer considers the Shyla a particularly satisfying fit when installed on a VPI table and arm. As a moving-coil cartridge, it remains a more system-dependent proposition than a typical high-output moving-magnet design; the review does not document compatibility across a broad range of non-VPI arms or phono stages.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

88/100

Its hybrid machined-aluminum and hard-plastic body is designed to reduce resonance, while the modified shell uses internal damping intended to improve rigidity and limit unwanted coil movement. The review presents these measures as purposeful engineering to control distortion, though it offers little on long-term durability.

Value for Money

92/100

At roughly $2,200-$2,400, the Shyla is described as terrific and affordable in comparison with other cartridges the reviewer has used. The reviewer also says its performance exceeded expectations for its asking price, giving it a notably favorable standing among premium moving-coil options.
