Bi-Wire Capable

The AE109² is designed to offer effortless, room filling performance from a slim-line floor-standing loudspeaker in much the same way the world acclaimed original AE109 did 20 years ago. To do this, two 130mm paper drivers utilising an ultra-high force motor system are used in partnership with a 25mm soft dome tweeter. The 2.5-way crossover features a unique topology allowing integration and power handling previously un-achievable from this type of speaker. Particular attention has been paid to the phase and time alignment for the most cohesive performance possible.

Like the AE100² stand-mount speaker, the driver and crossover are housed within a substantial 15mm HDF cabinet that takes styling cues from the award winning 500 Series. The result is an audio product with clean and uncluttered lines that can still deliver the thrilling and powerful presentation Acoustic Energy owners have come to expect. Black and walnut vinyl veneer finishes are available.

Deliciously Crispy

The AE109 brings surprisingly deep, controlled bass from a slim cabinet, matched with lively dynamics and an expansive soundstage, while a 25mm soft-dome tweeter gives treble detail and cohesive imaging. Reviewers at The Ear and Alpha Audio praised its musical timing, solid build and exceptional value.

The Ear

"I was delighted that so much low-frequency energy could emerge from such a slimline cabinet, and in such a controlled manner."

Pros

  • Surprisingly deep, controlled low end from a slim 2.5‑way cabinet, delivering punch without boom.
  • Impressive pace, rhythm and impact — strong micro/macro dynamics for the class.
  • Wide, tall and engaging soundstage with good imaging and layering despite narrow front dimensions.
  • Solid build and thoughtful engineering (HDF cabinet, slot port, upgraded tweeter) combine with standout value for money.

&

Cons

  • Performance is setup- and placement-sensitive — spikes and slight toe-in materially affect balance and presence.
  • Occasional midrange coloration: slight nasality or recessed dialogue in some mixes without careful positioning.

Bass

92/100

Dual 130mm woofers in a slim 2.5-way cabinet deliver surprisingly deep, controlled low end. Reviewers repeatedly praised 'so much low-frequency energy' and 'oodles of decent bass' without rear-wall dependence or boom, placing performance at the high end for small towers.

Mid

88/100

Midrange is generally clear, well-dovetailed with the treble and fast, per multiple reviewers. Minor issues noted: slight nasality on some voices and occasional recessed dialogue in certain TV mixes, preventing a top-tier midscore.

Treble

90/100

25mm soft-dome tweeter with waveguide yields good detail and lifted presence when toeed-in; reviewers described treble as 'nicely detailed' and well integrated with the midrange, with no reports of harshness.

Soundstage Imaging

91/100

Narrow-front cabinets belie an expansive soundstage: reviewers reported wide, tall and deep presentation with engaging imaging and good layering, making the speakers more involving than their footprint suggests.

Dynamics

91/100

Reviewers highlighted impressive pace, rhythm and impact — 'thumping basslines' and lively attack — indicating strong micro and macro dynamics for the price class and cabinet size.
