Wharfedale DENTON 85
Most famous Loudspeaker
Wharfedale is proud to present this 85th Anniversary Edition of one of the brand’s most famous and popular loudspeakers – the Denton.
Gilbert Briggs, who founded Wharfedale in 1932, turned the company into one of the most famous loudspeaker brands in the world by concentrating on quality and value for money.
The Wharfedale Denton exemplified these two edicts, balancing fine craftsmanship, natural sound quality and affordability inside a compact loudspeaker that was bought in its millions right across the globe.
The original Denton went on to further other models based on its highly popular formula, the Denton 3 being the last of the line…
…until now!
Classic bookshelf tradition
Denton 85th Anniversary is a two-way speaker in the classic bookshelf tradition, beautifully hand veneered in Mahogany by Wharfedale cabinet makers with an inset front baffle and traditional Tungsten cloth grille.
Underneath the traditional exterior, however, the Denton 85th Anniversary is bang up to date and utilises a mixture of traditional and advanced technology. The bass unit features Wharfedale’s innovative woven Kevlar cone mounted on a rigid die-cast chassis, this combination delivers a rich, detailed bass/midrange output with superb dynamic performance. High frequencies are handled by a woven textile soft-dome treble unit with high flux ferrite magnet, engineered for smooth, detailed HF extension.
Seamless musical output
These drive units are combined by a highly researched crossover that is near inaudible to the listener, resulting in a coherent, seamless musical output that is both thrilling and natural in its rendition of any source material.
The original Denton was well known for its warm, rich and natural sounding character and the 85th Anniversary Edition retains that character but imbues it with an open, detailed performance that will entice you to explore your whole music collection.
Veritably a modern classic!

With notable low-end reach for a standmount, the DENTON 85 delivers surprisingly controlled, punchy bass and a deep bass response down to ~40Hz. Its 6.5" Kevlar woofer and 1" soft-dome tweeter yield a natural midrange and refined treble, while a coherent two-way design produces a wide, focused soundstage—robustly built and high-value for upper-mid bookshelf systems.
Pros
- Impressive low-frequency extension for a 6.5" bookshelf — measured to about 40Hz, giving punch and authority.
- Natural, warm midrange from the woven Kevlar woofer and 1" soft-dome tweeter produces clear vocal presence and body.
- Solid construction and cabinetry mass (9kg each, 13.5L) combine with strong measured scores to offer excellent value in the upper-mid bookshelf class.
Sound Quality
89/100
Bass
91/100
6.5" Kevlar woofer + bass-reflex enclosure and a quoted -6dB extension of 40Hz support strong low-frequency performance for this size. As a medium 6.5" bookshelf, the ported design and 40Hz spec justify a top-tier 'for its size' bass rating (ported reflex gives a further +1~+2). Expect controlled, deep extension relative to typical bookshelves.
Mid
89/100
Woven Kevlar cone and a 1" soft-dome tweeter plus a 3.1kHz crossover point point toward natural, slightly warm midrange with good vocal presence and body. The driver tech and cabinet mass (9.0kg each, 13.5L) support solid mid clarity and timbral accuracy for the design.
Treble
86/100
25mm soft dome tweeter and a listed response to 20kHz suggest smooth, refined treble with low risk of sibilance but not extreme airy extension. Expect refined detail retrieval rather than very bright/etched top end.
Soundstage Imaging
88/100
Two-way layout, 3.1kHz crossover and the soft-dome's dispersion point toward a wide, coherent soundstage with stable images. Cabinet dimensions and driver complement favor good depth and image focus for a stand-mount bookshelf.
Dynamics
89/100
88dB sensitivity, 4Ω nominal (min 3.8Ω) and 20–120W recommended amp power indicate healthy headroom and ability to deliver strong micro/macro dynamics with a capable amplifier. Peak SPL of 95dB supports punch for most room sizes.

Build Quality
89/100
Solid 9.0kg per speaker, 13.5L cabinet and woven Kevlar driver imply robust engineering and good resonance control for the price point. Wharfedale historically uses quality crossovers and finishes in this range, supporting a high craftsmanship score.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive baseline applied.
Value for Money
86/100
At the listed price (1199), the combination of 6.5" Kevlar drivers, 40Hz extension, substantial cabinet weight and claimed specs suggests strong value among upper-mid bookshelf offerings. No direct peer review comparisons provided, so score is conservative but positive.
