Nagra HD AMP Statement power amplifier

The Nagra HD AMP was designed for ultimate high-end systems that are able to reproduce music with the utmost fidelity. The HD AMP consists of mono amplifiers capable of driving the most demanding speakers and transcending their performance.

The HD AMP came from the need of bringing Nagra’s signature transparency to more powerful amplifiers so as to accommodate even larger rooms and less sensitive speakers

It all started from our customers who could not use Nagra amplifiers, like the acclaimed Nagra MSA, in their bigger systems because they needed more power to drive demanding speakers or fill a very large room. They were frustrated by having to mix and match Nagra sources, such as the HD DAC, with other brands for amplification.

Early in the development stage, we realized that we could push the limits of what it is possible to achieve in an amplifier if we allowed ourselves to have a larger chassis. We took inspiration from the world-acclaimed Nagra VPA amplifier and designed elegant tower-shaped monoblocks.

The power supply goes to extremes to make sure the amplifier is stable and can deliver high power at any time. It is built around a 1600 VA transformer. In Nagra’s own tradition it is followed by a multiple diode stage and a very complex dual PI filter. This allows the amplifier voltage rails to be extremely stable. In addition, the current draw from the HD AMP is not polluted by impulse signals, so the rest of the set-up can perform at its best. The dual Pi filter acts like a protective shield between the HD AMP and the mains.

Each Nagra HD AMP unit features a bank of 264 mF of custom-made Mundorf condensers. They are the reference in their category and you rarely meet them in this quantity because most manufacturers consider them too expensive. We have chosen them after many hours on the test bench and numerous critical listening sessions.

The Nagra HD AMP audio amplification stage is relatively simple in its conception; this is in part what makes it so transparent and direct. Actually, each stage has been tuned to reach striking results. The driver stage, for instance, features numerous decoupling capacitors of different technologies. It has a very low output impedance to make the most of the power MOSFETs that follow.

Like all its famous predecessors in Nagra range, the HD AMP uses MOSFET, field effect transistors. They are the closest thing to a valve triode and you can definitely feel their sonic character: direct, fast and musical. The HD AMP has precisely matched clusters of MOSFETs, to insure the purest reproduction.

The Nagra HD AMP is fitted with a traditional Nagra Modulometer on the front panel, showing the output power.

An LED is also fitted to indicate saturations and excessive temperature.

The amplifier is equipped with balanced and unbalanced inputs and an IN/OUT trigger function.

Flagship power with surgical resolution

The Nagra HD AMP is a vertical-format flagship monoblock that pairs prodigious muscle with razor-sharp clarity. With 250 W RMS per channel (and Class A up to 30 W), it delivers exceptional headroom and slam while preserving delicate micro-detail — a combination noted in Ken Kessler's review for HiFi News. Sonically it is fast and transparent: taut, well-controlled bass, an open, expressive midband and non-fatiguing treble produce a huge, three-dimensional soundstage.

Internally the HD AMP is over-engineered for serviceability and performance — a 1600VA toroidal, large Mundorf reservoir caps, modular PCB layout and Nagra's signature modulometer. Ideal for owners of demanding, high-efficiency systems who need flagship-level dynamics and refinement; reviewers judge the performance to justify its six-figure positioning in the market.

HiFi News

"It's the hi-fi equivalent of a floodlit sports stadium – things are presented on a grand scale yet all the players on the ground are clearly visible, well lit without dazzling."

Pros

  • Exceptional dynamics and headroom that drive demanding loudspeakers with authority and rhythmic control.
  • Highly transparent, resolving fine detail with an open midband and natural, non‑fatiguing treble.
  • Robust, serviceable build (1600VA toroidal, large Mundorf caps, modular layout) with useful connectivity and Nagra's Modulometer.

&

Cons

  • Very heavy and large monoblocks (56 kg each) that demand careful handling and dedicated floor space.
  • Top-tier, six-figure price places it firmly in the flagship segment — performance-justified but not aimed at mainstream buyers.

Sound Quality

Dynamics

96/100

The monoblock architecture and large PSU (noted 1600VA toroidal and eight large reservoir caps) underpin prodigious current and headroom: reviewers describe a unit that 'takes the album apart piece by piece' and maintains rhythmic flow even at high levels. With 250 W RMS into 8 Ω (and stated capability up to 1,000 W into lower impedances) the amp shows exceptional slam, control and authority on bass-heavy and complex material — driving difficult loudspeakers with apparent ease.

Soundstage Imaging

92/100

The HD AMP projects an impressively large, three-dimensional soundstage with stable, well-defined images — instruments are described as sharply placed and the stage grows with level. Imaging precision and depth remain consistent even at higher playback levels, contributing to a vivid and spacious presentation.

Build Quality

94/100

Robust, serviceable construction with a large toroidal transformer, extensive reservoir capacitance (custom Mundorf caps) and clean modular layout; the classic Nagra 'Modulometer' and functional fascia emphasize precision and utility. As heavy monoblocks (56 kg each) they signal a high-end, over-engineered power supply and exceptional mechanical build that aligns with the amp's performance.

Value for Money

90/100

At the stated price (~109,450) this is clearly a six-figure, flagship offering; reviewers indicate that the performance — 250 W/8 Ω (and up to 1,000 W into lower impedances), remarkable transparency and headroom — justifies a premium in its class. This reads as a 'justified premium' for buyers in the top-tier monoblock segment (competing with other flagship, six-figure monoblocks), rather than a mainstream value buy.
