Nagra Audio NAGRA REFERENCE PREAMP
For all of its nearly three quarter of a century existence, Nagra has been, first and foremost, research and development driven. With decade after decade of groundbreaking innovations, Nagra has set lofty standards in diverse categories of audio devices. This is nowhere more apparent than in our high-end, high performance audio division.
When introduced, Nagra’s HD line set new technical and sonic standards that reflected years of thoughtful research combined with exhaustive listening tests designed to corroborate the scientific advancements that each HD product brought forth.
Since our founding in 1951, Nagra’s company culture has driven our pursuit of perfection. Combine this with the Swiss tradition of precision engineering and it was
inevitable that continuing research and development on the HD line platforms would ultimately result in advances that justify the release of a product line-up which
substantially extends the sonic envelope of the HD line.
The latest products to bear the appellation “Reference” are the Reference PREAMP, Reference DAC and Reference AMP.
Originally released in 2017 and later updated in 2020 the Nagra HD PREAMP set new standards in the analog preamplifier category. Its stellar specifications as well as its natural, transparent and three dimensional sound has been lauded by discerning audiophiles and reviewers around the world.
Following the design of the Nagra Reference Turntable and its associated tonearm and cartridge, we released the Nagra HD PHONO. This new, true reference, source
allowed us to push the boundaries of what was possible for a phono stage. Utilizing discernment provided by these outstanding reference components, we gained new
insights into opportunities to extend the sonic envelope of the HD PREAMP. The Reference PREAMP sets the new standard in analog preamplification.
Our intensive research and painstaking extensive listening sessions resulted in:
– Essential component changes in the audio unit, including custom made capacitors
– New generation high voltage power supplies inside the audio signal unit (generating the 200 V DC grid tension)
– Super-cap capacity added inside the power supply
– Dual chassis power supplies, one dedicated to the audio signal section, one dedicated to all of the controls and relay switching, including home automation*
– Mechanical damping with the addition of a phenolic layer inside the top cover
– REF medallion above the modulometer as part of the Reference family of products
* The Reference PREAMP (as well as future DAC and PHONO) can run on a single power supply. The result is more spectacular and life-like with two PSU. Starting with one PSU will allow customers to go step by step and later on add a second one for unrivaled performance.

NAGRA REFERENCE PREAMP
The Nagra Reference Preamp stakes a claim as a reference-class analog controller, pairing tube warmth with exceptional clarity and a truly three-dimensional soundstage. As observed by Best of High End, the preamp blends musicality with technical precision to deliver revealing, natural tonality.
Internally the design leans on high-voltage 200 V supplies, a super-cap reservoir and selected NOS E88CC tubes to support authoritative transients and very low crosstalk; the heavy dual-chassis, custom capacitors and phenolic damping reinforce a quiet, detailed presentation. Ideal for audiophiles building a flagship analog rig or pairing with a reference turntable, its modular power-supply option lets owners scale performance over time. The Reference is presented as a meticulous, Swiss-crafted centerpiece for serious systems.
Pros
- Natural, transparent three-dimensional imaging and tonal fidelity supported by the HD/Reference lineage.
- Exceptional dynamics and transient control driven by 200 V high-voltage supplies and a super-capacity power reservoir.
- Reference-level build quality: dual-chassis construction, custom capacitors, phenolic damping and selected NOS E88CC tubes.
- Flexible functionality with an integrated phono stage and the option to add a second power supply for incremental upgrades.
Transparency
91/100
Reviewers repeatedly describe the HD/Reference line as natural and transparent and Nagra's design (dual chassis, separation of power supplies, super-cap supply) is explicitly intended to minimize interference. The published specs (very high dynamic range >150 dB, extremely low crosstalk > -130 dB) and use of selected NOS E88CC tubes support very low added coloration while retaining tube character. No reviewer reported hiss/hum or noise-floor problems, so transparency is rated very high although explicit phrases like 'dead quiet' or 'black background' were not used.

92/100
Dynamics
92/100
Review copy highlights the new-generation high-voltage power supplies (200 V DC) and super-capacity power handling, both of which directly support excellent micro- and macro-dynamic performance. Reviewers link the power architecture to outstanding transient control and stable delivery, implying the preamp preserves punch and life in recordings. No signs of compression or dynamic limitation were noted in the reviews.
Soundstage Imaging
92/100
The Reference preamp is credited with producing a three-dimensional soundstage and natural imaging, language used explicitly in the review to describe the HD/Reference line. Separation and precision are reinforced by the low crosstalk specs and the mechanical damping measures Nagra applied to the chassis. Reviewers emphasize an expansive, precise presentation rather than a boxed or congested image.

Build Quality
96/100
Multiple review notes stress Swiss precision engineering, dual-chassis construction, custom capacitors, phenolic mechanical damping and a super-cap power supply — all hallmarks of top-tier industrial and electrical design. The heavy, separately housed power supply approach and selected NOS tubes further underline a reference-class build and component pedigree. Review language frames the unit as a flagship-level product with meticulous attention to craft and reliability.
Features Connectivity
82/100
The review specifically calls out a phono stage (presented as a major development) and flexible power-supply configurations (ability to add a second supply), which raise functionality above a bare-bones preamp. However, the review does not enumerate balanced I/O, headphone outputs, remote, HT bypass or other common high-end conveniences, so features scoring is conservative: better than minimal but not fully specified as 'fully featured'.
Value for Money
86/100
Review language focuses on excellence, refinement and flagship positioning but does not directly address the asking price, so the score follows the neutral baseline for value commentary. Given the clear reference-class engineering and performance claims, the product likely targets buyers prepared to pay top-tier prices; reviewers do not explicitly call out price as unjustified or as a bargain.
