1 DD 4 BA 8 EST design per side

To get the best sound quality possible, the FX17 features a design of one dynamic driver, four balanced armature drivers, and eight electrostatic drivers per side. A five-way crossover has been precisely tuned to balance energy distribution among the driver and ensures each unit operates in its optimal state, resulting in a grander soundstage and more natural sound.

Eight electrostatic drivers with a truly airy feeling

Electrostatic drivers have exceptional high-frequency extension easily reaching 50kHz and sense of air that gives the listener a grander soundstage. Their downside is that their sensitivity is only 99dB/mW, which is low compared to the 110dB/mW sensitivity typically found in balanced armature and dynamic drivers - leading to the 'masking effect.' Thus, the FX17 uses 8 electrostatic units to increase sound pressure levels in order to make the electrostatic drivers more audibly perceptible as they handle the high and ultra-high frequencies above 6kHz, rather than just be for decoration.

*The masking effect refers to the phenomenon where the human ear's sensitivity to high-frequency signals within the presence of high-volume level low-frequency signals is reduced.

Four custom Knowles BA drivers

The FIIO FX17 uses two Knowles balanced armature driver composite units that handle the mid and high-frequency sounds. Each of the composite balanced armature driver units is divided into two parts, one part responsible for mids and the other for mid-high frequency – leading to denser mids and a more transparent sound and allows them to transition seamlessly into the electrostatic drivers. To achieve higher flagship-level vocal performance, FIIO, in collaboration with Knowles, custom-developed a 'Midrange Enhanced Balanced Armature Unit.' Acoustic vents have been added to the rear cavity of the balanced armature, which provide more sound energy reserves for the mid-frequency balanced armature unit to further tap into the driver’s advantages. The overall result is lush, mellow vocals that make the singer’s alluring voice seem as if it's truly right next to you.

Lithium-magnesium alloy diaphragm dynamic driver High-impedance material second only to beryllium

Lithium-magnesium alloy is lightweight, rigid, and has a density of 1.6g/cm³ - making it an ideal material second only to beryllium for a dynamic driver diaphragm. When reproducing high-frequency signals with rapid vibrations, the lithium-magnesium alloy diaphragm has excellent mechanical properties thanks to its high internal damping – leading to significantly reduced intrinsic frequency resonance and distortion. It allows distortion to not exceed 0.2%, for a truly clean sound.

Surging sound Patented S.Turbo acoustic design

Inspired by the turbos found in supercars, the FIIO Acoustic Center has meticulously developed the patented S.Turbo turbocharged acoustic design. It cleverly guides sound through a turbo-shaped structure to enhance the bass, making it robust and deep-extending. At the same time, it skillfully filters out excess mid and high-frequency information from the dynamic driver to ensure a smooth tonal transition between low and mid-high frequencies for a more powerful and rich sound.

Resonant back cavity, acoustic balance

The FX17’s back cavity has been optimized for better sound. By damping with vents that have a diameter of only 0.2mm, the FX17 precisely controls the airflow and thus achieves air damping balance between the front and back cavities of the dynamic driver. Not only does this enhance the Q factor and amplitude of the dynamic driver, it also improves low-frequency extension, as well as enhancing mid-frequency clarity and transparency.

Electronic and physical five-way crossover

"On the FX15 there is a switch to turn on and off the electrostatic drivers, to prove they are not just for decoration but are important in handling a wide high-frequency response range. I believe many audiophiles have already experienced highly resolving treble that electrostatic drivers are capable of. The FX17 increases the number of electrostatic drivers – responsible for handling frequencies above 6kHz - to 8 per side, reducing the power requirements. The FX17 also adopts an electronic and physical dual-system five-way crossover design for precise control over the drivers. This not only ensures a smooth frequency response curve but also a flat impedance curve for broader adaptability. Such a crossover design ensures balanced energy distribution and smooth transitions between drivers, at both low and high volumes."

Pure titanium construction

The FX17 features a minimalist aesthetic, with a classic and natural curved cavity. The FX17’s shell ear shell cavity is made of high-density, high-strength titanium that is precisely milled from a single block and meticulously hand-polished. It is treated with vapor deposition which hardens the surface and gives it a lustrous finish, making for a beautiful display of light and shadow intertwined.

Available in two timeless finishes, Titanium and Silver. The Titanium version features a matte, sandblasted texture that resists fingerprints and scratches, exuding understated elegance. The Silver version shines with a smooth, mirror-like luster, reflecting light in a dynamic, captivating way.

Mixed gold, silver, and copper cable

The FX17’s cable utilizes three different transmission materials – gold, silver, and copper - in order to take advantage of the strengths offered by the different materials. The gold, silver and copper are forged at over 1000 degrees and undergo secondary refining to form crystalline monocrystals to remove impurities and reduce transmission loss. Each of the three elements have their own advantages, which together result in significantly improved sound quality.

Value for Money

85/100

FiiO’s flagship FX17 delivers meaty, textured mid-bass, warm clear vocals and a remarkably spacious soundstage, pairing visceral dynamics with finely separated detail. Giz Audio highlights its smooth, airy treble, while Super* Review praises its natural, powerful tonality. Titanium construction and a 13-driver tribrid design complete an assured high-end IEM.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"I actually think this is the best IM that Fio has ever made"

— Super* Review

Pros

Forceful, textured mid-bass delivers physical punch without bleeding into the midrange.

Warm, full mids retain strong vocal clarity, detail and separation without congestion.

Wide, open staging creates an immersive presentation with convincing width and depth.

Premium solid-titanium shells and a highly specified 13-driver tribrid architecture support flagship-grade build quality.

&

Cons

Large, chunky shells may be less accommodating for smaller ears.

Mid-bass emphasis means deep sub-bass rumble is less dominant than some listeners may prefer.

Mid-treble can sound somewhat crashy for treble-sensitive listeners.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 92/100

Reviewers describe a warm-leaning but highly capable flagship presentation, combining powerful bass, clear textured mids and spacious technical performance. Its main tonal caveat is a mid-treble region that one reviewer finds slightly crashy rather than completely smooth.

Bass

94/100

Giz Audio and Super* Review both praise the FX17's punchy, meaty mid-bass impact, texture and weight. The bass remains controlled enough to avoid midrange bleed, though Giz Audio notes that mid-bass takes precedence over the deepest sub-bass rumble.

Midrange

91/100

The midrange is consistently described as warm, full and well textured, with rich male vocals and clear female vocals. Giz Audio finds it relaxed and free of harshness, while Super* Review notes some lower-mid thickness rather than a lean or neutral presentation.

Treble

89/100

Giz Audio hears smooth, airy and highly detailed highs with shimmer and no sibilance. Super* Review finds decent extension and generally tolerable treble, but reports that the mid-treble can sound somewhat crashy and may not suit listeners who are particularly treble-sensitive.

Resolution Separation

94/100

Detail retrieval and separation receive particularly strong praise. Giz Audio reports excellent midrange detail without congestion, while Super* Review hears stronger definition and clarity; Soundnews rates resolution at 95/100.

Soundstage Imaging

91/100

Giz Audio describes a wide, open and immersive stage with convincing width and depth. Super* Review considers imaging solid rather than exceptional, but still finds instruments clearly separated into their own spaces; Soundnews rates stage size at 93/100.

Dynamics Coherence

95/100

The FX17 is repeatedly characterized as visceral, weighty and dynamically contrasty, with bass lending music real power and impact. Soundnews awards dynamics 96/100, reinforcing the impression of a lively and assured presentation.

FIT COMFORT ISOLATION PERFORMANCE 78/100

The titanium shells are somewhat large, so fit will be more anatomy-dependent than with a compact monitor. Still, Super* Review found them comfortable enough to sleep in across multiple nights; the supplied reviews do not address passive isolation.

Seal Stability

86/100

Super* Review says FiiO handled the ergonomics well considering the design, although the earpieces remain on the larger side. There are no reports of unstable sealing, bass loss, or large tonal changes caused by fit.

Comfort

88/100

Soundnews rates comfort at 87/100, and Super* Review reports being able to sleep in the FX17 over multiple nights. The larger shell shape may still be less universally accommodating than a smaller IEM.

Isolation

50/100

The provided reviews say little about real-world passive noise attenuation. There is no specific evidence on how effectively the FX17 blocks external sound.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Accessories

92/100

Soundnews highlights the CNC-machined titanium body and a detachable cable made from monocrystalline gold, copper and silver, while Super* Review also describes the shells as solid titanium. The reviewed materials and execution suggest a notably premium construction, although the supplied excerpts offer little detail on the tip assortment or case.

Value for Money

85/100

At roughly $1,500 in the US and €1,590 locally, the FX17 is positioned as a costly flagship. Reviewers are strongly positive about its sound, including Super* Review calling it FiiO's best IEM, but the supplied reviews do not directly assess whether it outperforms competing options at this price.
