Vorverstärker
The 088 preamplifier perfectly melds high-quality sound with attractive visual appearance. Its operation is simple and intuitive and guarantees a relaxed listening experience. As a member of the Burmester preamplifier family, it profits greatly from technological and engineering advances that mark, for example, the performance of the Reference Line preamp 077. Among them are the proven dual-mono design for optimal channel separation, resonance-damping carbon fiber suspension for best insulation from mechanical interferences and DC-coupled signal paths without distorting capacitors for precise bass reproduction.
Detailed impressions of the 088.
The design of the 088 preamplifier is directly derived from elements of the Top Line and thereby recognizable as an iconic Burmester product.
Design
Two large rotary dials for input selection and volume control dominate the classic chrome front panel of the 088 preamplifier. Different operating modes may be selected using chromed toggle switches on the front panel. The engraved Burmester signature and the model moniker above the power switch, which can be used to switch the 088 on, off or into standby mode, round out the visuals. The rear panel offers the full range of possible connections.
Handmade
The exquisite chrome front panel, typical for Burmester’s Top Line components, is manufactured in a complex process by carefully chosen suppliers. It immediately indicates the overall built quality relying on highest-quality parts. Even the small screws for bolting the front panel to the housing are individually chrome-plated and checked for perfect quality.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 50/100
The supplied review describes the 088's isolation measures as intended to improve clarity and reduce distortion, but offers no direct listening impressions. It says little about tonal character, dynamics, or spatial performance in use.
Transparency Resolution
50/100
Audiophilepure says the carbon-fibre suspension and careful internal layout aim to optimize clarity and reduce distortion. It does not provide a direct listening account of detail retrieval, noise floor, or transparency.
Tonal Balance Musicality
50/100
The available review does not characterize the 088's tonal balance, timbre, warmth, neutrality, or long-term musical appeal. No comparative listening observations are supplied.
Dynamics
50/100
The review provides no direct evidence about macro impact, microdynamic expression, or the preamp's sense of drive. Its discussion of reduced vibration and distortion does not describe dynamic behavior in listening.
Soundstage Imaging

Build Quality
92/100
Audiophilepure found the internal circuits beautifully laid out and noted careful component selection and attention to minimizing unwanted interaction. The carbon-fibre suspension system is a substantial, purpose-built measure to limit external vibration entering the chassis.
Features Connectivity
88/100
The 088 provides six balanced XLR line inputs, balanced main and tape outputs, and a 6.3 mm headphone jack. Its module bay can accommodate a DAC, line input, or balanced MM/MC phono module, while RCA-to-XLR adaptors are available for single-ended sources.
Value for Money
81/100
At an asking price in the $18,400-$37,000 range, the 088 is a premium purchase, and Audiophilepure notes that adding a further module costs a hefty £2,600. The review offers no direct comparison with competing preamplifiers or a clear verdict on whether its performance justifies the overall outlay.
