SIMPLICITY AND STYLE

Lumina takes note of Sonus faber’s iconic natural materials.

SIMPLICITY, STYLE, AND PERFORMANCE

Lumina takes note from core Sonus faber technologies, design, and manufacturing principles – transforming them into a beautifully minimalistic masterpiece, made in Italy.

TWEETER

The iconic D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) tweeter, the same used in the Sonetto series, features a Kurtmueller hand coated soft silk diaphragm of 29mm. The chrome rings around the drivers highlight their shapes and proportions and give brightness to the front baffle.

MIDWOOFER

Lumina CI features a brand-new 4” midwoofer developed for this collection. It is equipped with a custom-made basket and a diaphragm composed of cellulose pulp blended with other natural fibers.

TERMINALS

Each Lumina speaker features two pairs of nickel-plated terminals, allowing for an upgradable experience through bi-wiring and bi-amping.

REFLEX PORT

The reflex port gives additional versatility for the models’ range. Placed on the frontside, this solution makes Lumina CI significantly less sensitive to placement, delivering powerful and nuanced sound even when positioned close to a back wall.

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

Sonus Faber Lumina CI delivers a lush, musical focus with a notably natural midrange, complemented by refined treble and a surprisingly wide soundstage from its time-optimized crossover. Controlled low-end punch and a premium finish belie the speaker's compact size, a combination praised by Taps Das for its musicality and build.

Pros

  • Rich, natural midrange that gives vocals and acoustic instruments strong presence.
  • Refined, airy treble with controlled delivery and low sibilance.
  • Wide, coherent soundstage and precise imaging for a compact two-way design.
  • High-quality build and elegant finishes that reflect Sonus Faber's premium fit-and-finish.

&

Cons

  • Modest 87 dB sensitivity and 4 Ω nominal impedance mean it benefits from a capable amplifier for best dynamics and headroom.
  • Positioned in premium price territory, so value depends on prioritizing voicing and finish over budget alternatives.

Sound Quality

88/100

Bass

86/100

Vented-box design with two 120 mm paper woofers and a quoted 65 Hz low-end gives notably good extension for a compact bookshelf. Sensitivity (87 dB) and 4 Ω nominal impedance suggest the speaker benefits from a capable amp, but the driver size, venting and solid cabinet mass support controlled, musical bass that punches above the expected small-speaker norm.

Mid

90/100

Two 120 mm paper cones plus Sonus Faber's crossover tuning and DAD tweeter imply a natural, richly detailed midrange with good body for vocals and acoustic instruments. The crossover notes emphasize optimized amplitude/phase for space/time performance, supporting strong timbre and presence.

Treble

88/100

29 mm DAD soft-dome tweeter and a stated 24 kHz extension point to a refined, airy top end with controlled delivery rather than etched brightness. Design choices (tweeter decoupling and time-domain optimization) indicate low susceptibility to sibilance and smooth high-frequency dispersion.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

Crossover optimization for space/time performance and Sonus Faber's known voicing suggest wide, coherent staging and precise imaging for a bookshelf form factor. The horizontal 2-way layout and time-focused design should yield stable images and good depth when positioned carefully.

Dynamics

85/100

Recommended 30–100 W amplifier range and modest 87 dB sensitivity indicate the Lumina CI can deliver solid micro- and macro-dynamics with adequate amplification. Expect strong transient punch for its size, though ultimate headroom will depend on amp choice given the 4 Ω load.

Build Quality

92/100

Semi-gloss/high-gloss wood finishes and leather details plus a substantial 7.6 kg cabinet per speaker reflect premium materials and fit-and-finish. Sonus Faber's engineering (decoupled tweeter, rubber pads) and overall execution point to well-built enclosures with attention to resonance control.

Features Connectivity

80/100

Passive bookshelf with two binding-post connectors — baseline passive score applied. No DSP, streaming, or special connectivity expected or penalized; standard passive setup requires suitable amplification.

Value for Money

78/100

At the listed price (~1000), the Lumina CI sits in premium territory where brand cachet and refined voicing justify much of the cost, but it competes with highly regarded alternatives offering different strengths. Good value for buyers prioritizing Sonus Faber styling and mid-focused musicality, but not a budget 'best buy' compared to lower-cost market disruptors.
