Overall Score 87/100

Rating for [object Object]

Nicely Roasted

The AT-VM95E delivers a clean, open midband with tight bass and finely etched treble, sounding more refined than the AT-95E it replaces. Hi-Fi Choice and StereoNET United Kingdom praise its easy fitting, upgrade-friendly design, and lively detail, making it a sharp, confidence-building entry-level cartridge.

StereoNET United Kingdom

"This new cartridge is more subtle, nuanced and intricate than its predecessor, unlocking a good deal more detail from the recording…"

Pros

  • Open, clean midband with detailed treble and a refined, engaging presentation.
  • Easy to fit and user-friendly, thanks to threaded inserts and simple stylus changes.
  • Strong value for money with performance that clearly improves on the AT-95E.
  • Wide soundstaging and good tracking keep busy records organized and entertaining.

&

Cons

  • Bass has less weight and impact than some rivals, favoring speed over heft.
  • It can sound a little bright, with slight inner-groove sibilance on some pressings.

Sound Quality

84/100

Weighted average of the three sound sub-criteria, rounded to the nearest integer. Reviewers consistently describe a clean, open, and refined presentation that improves meaningfully on the AT-95E, with good drive and musical engagement for the price class.

Overall Sound

84/100

The cartridge is repeatedly described as open, clean, and more subtle and nuanced than its predecessor, with a character that is still on the brighter side of neutral but notably more refined. Reviewers praise its taut bass, detailed treble, and convincing tonal realism, while noting it remains an entry-level cartridge rather than a truly luxurious one.

Tracking Retrieval

83/100

Tracking is very solid rather than exceptional: one review notes it handles hot pressings without congestion or confusion, and another says it stays controlled enough that inner-groove sibilance is only slight and rarely distracting. That points to competent groove tracing and retrieval, but with a few remaining budget-cartridge caveats.

Soundstage Imaging

83/100

Stereo spread and layering are clearly above expectations at this price, with soundstaging described as satisfyingly wide and elements of the mix hanging back well. Imaging is not portrayed as class-leading or holographic, but it is precise and composed enough to earn a strong score.

Build Quality

88/100

Reviewers emphasize that the body feels more substantial than the old AT-95E and is designed to reduce resonance, which supports a clear step up in execution. Threaded inserts, easier mounting, and an especially simple stylus-change process make it feel thoughtfully engineered and user-friendly.

Features Usability

87/100

Tonearm compatibility is good for a mainstream half-inch mount MM: the moderate 2.0 g tracking force and straightforward fitting make it easy to install and live with on a wide range of standard tonearms. It is not especially specialized or fussy, and the replaceable stylus system adds practical flexibility.

Standard mounting, moderate tracking force, and simple setup make this cartridge broadly compatible with typical consumer tonearms. The threaded inserts and easy stylus replacement improve day-to-day usability, while the review evidence does not suggest unusual matching demands.

Value for Money

91/100

Both reviews are explicitly positive about value, calling it great performance at the price, highly recommended, and a very impressive proposition. Given its price class, it comes across as a strong upgrade over the classic AT-95E and an easy recommendation for budget-conscious listeners.
