WiiM Ultra

SoundStage Solo heard a natural tonal balance without excess brightness or bass heaviness, while Hi-Fi Choice praised the avoidance of the etched character sometimes associated with ESS-based designs. The Absolute Sound found it even-handed and tonally realistic, although The Ear and several video reviewers noted a slight edge, veil or reduced fullness beside more ambitious external DACs and preamps.

Reviewers consistently found good clarity, vocal articulation and worthwhile retrieval of fine detail, with SoundStage Solo praising its handling of subtle acoustic and jazz nuances. However, Hi-Fi Choice, Future Audiophile and AudioAdvice all found more expensive alternatives better able to produce air, image separation, three-dimensionality and the last degree of detail.

The Ultra handled CD-quality and high-resolution material consistently in SoundStage Solo's testing, with no clicks, pops or obvious streaming artifacts, and Erin's Audio Corner measured a flat response with very low distortion and inaudible noise. Its digital output is also regarded as clean and flexible, though a few reviewers considered the internal DAC section slightly veiled or preferred an external DAC for greater clarity and depth.

The WiiM Home app was described by The Ear as excellent and competitive with nearly any alternative, while reviewers praised its broad service support, gapless playback, EQ, room correction and easy setup. The touchscreen, supplied remote and app make daily operation straightforward, although some users noted brief delays when changing high-resolution tracks and occasional HDMI-ARC glitches after firmware updates.

The Ultra is exceptionally well equipped for its compact price, offering HDMI ARC, phono and line inputs, optical input, USB storage playback, subwoofer output, headphone output, trigger output, and optical, coaxial and USB digital outputs. Reviewers repeatedly highlight the useful preamp functionality, flexible EQ and room-correction options; omissions include balanced XLR outputs, AES/EBU and Apple AirPlay.

Fit and finish receive generally positive comments: SoundStage Solo called it a quality-feeling appliance, and reviewers appreciated the elegant front, metal top plate and useful touchscreen. It remains a lightweight, budget-oriented component with some plastic construction, and several reviewers reported a slightly scratchy or rough-feeling volume control.

At roughly $329-$349, reviewers repeatedly describe the Ultra as exceptional value because it combines capable streaming, DAC, preamp, phono, HDMI ARC and room-correction functions in one compact unit. The Ear calls it a proverbial “no-brainer,” while several reviewers say it competes closely with or offers much of the functionality of substantially more expensive streamers, even if external DACs can improve ultimate sound quality.
