Wharfedale EVO 5.2
The EVO 5 Series represents a bold step forward for Wharfedale - taking everything that makes the EVO4 a showroom-staple and multi-award winning loudspeaker series but blending luxurious design updates with technical evolution further to enhance the appeal of a price-bracket-defying loudspeaker offering.
Whether an audiophile seeking nuanced musical expression or a casual listener desiring clarity and depth, the EVO 5 speakers promise an immersive, high-fidelity experience that rivals far more expensive high-end audio offerings.
High Frequency Unit
The EVO series concept originated from the same thorough research and development processes that characterised Wharfedale’s flagship Elysian project. It was specifically designed to bridge the gap between affordability and high-end performance. A notable feature of this series is the EVO AMT (Air Motion Transformer) high-frequency unit.
A Distinctive Approach to High Frequencies
AMT Tweeter for Precision and Detail: In developing the new EVO 5 series, Wharfedale has further evolved the cutting-edge Air Motion Transformer (AMT). The AMT is a type of high-frequency driver used in speakers, known for its exceptional accuracy, speed, and low distortion compared to traditional dome treble units.
Instead of using a conventional dome or cone to push air forward, an AMT uses a pleated diaphragm made of an ultra-thin, lightweight material (often a polymer film). Strong magnets are positioned on either side of the diaphragm, creating a powerful magnetic field. When an audio signal is passed through the conductive traces, the diaphragm is energised, causing the pleats to contract and expand. As the pleats move, they "squeeze" and "expand" the air between them, pushing it out in a highly controlled and effcient manner. This method allows the AMT to move four times more air than a traditional dome tweeter of the same surface area, leading to lower distortion (since the diaphragm moves less than a typical dome or ribbon), faster transient response (due to the lightweight material and minimal movement), wider frequency range and better dispersion.
The EVO 5 AMT goes further with Revolutionary Sound
Absorption and Damping Enhancements
A new sound-absorbing material, Silentweave™, has been added to the cavity behind the diaphragm to reduce sound wave reflection and sound colouration inside the speaker. This material, a combination of cotton and felt fibre, was specially developed for the EVO 5 series.
All EVO 5 drive units benefit from a new acoustic damping frame called ResoFrame™, made from elastomer and visible as a cog-like shape within the driver’s front panel. In the case of the AMT, an additional elastomer damping gasket between the diaphragm and the front plate further reduces mechanical resonances and smooths the response, especially in the important lower treble band.
These Internal Acoustic enhancements minimise unwanted sound colouration, ensuring a purer, more natural sonic signature. This smoother treble response delivers a listening experience that is crisp, controlled, and devoid of harshness.
Lower-Midrange and Bass Refinements for Unparalleled Vocal Reproduction
Enhanced Midrange: A new technique, labelled Resoseal™, sees a thin mass ring of elastomer applied to the rear of the cone where it meets the surround. This further optimises midrange frequency response, allowing vocals to sound richer, more natural, and more emotionally engaging. This subtle yet critical enhancement ensures a refined and immersive listening experience.
Reengineered Cabinetry for Superior Resonance Control
Each model in the EVO 5 series now features an optimally increased internal cabinet volume. The expanded cabinet volume contributes to deeper bass extension and improved overall sound dispersion, creating a more immersive and expansive audio field.
The inclusion of a hybrid plinth, which combines metal and wood elements of the cabinet’s details, enhances structural integrity and reduces unwanted vibrations. This innovative base ensures that sound remains clean and uncoloured, free from external resonance artefacts.
EVO 5 Stands
For the EVO 5.1 and EVO 5.2 loudspeakers, specially designed stands are offered to ensure the perfect synergy between form and function. Crafted from high-carbon steel, these stands provide exceptional strength and stability while effectively minimising unwanted vibrations and interactions with floor surfaces that could compromise sound quality.
Engineered with precision, they position the loudspeakers at the ideal listening height, ensuring an immersive and well-balanced audio experience across various seating positions. Their understated yet elegant design seamlessly complements the aesthetic of the EVO 5 series, maintaining the refined and sophisticated appeal of the speakers themselves.
Beyond aesthetics, these stands enhance overall performance by also aiding perfect speaker placement, allowing the EVO 5.1 and EVO 5.2 to deliver their full sonic potential with clarity, depth, and precision for audiophiles and design-conscious listeners alike.

The EVO 5.2 pairs an airy, detailed top end from its AMT tweeter with surprisingly deep, controlled bass and a warm, natural midrange in a compact three‑way bookshelf. Reviewers at The Ear and Best of High End note refined cabinet engineering, seamless integration and an expansive, precise soundstage.
Pros
- AMT tweeter yields detailed, low‑distortion treble with strong extension and speed.
- Woven‑Kevlar woofer and tuned cabinet deliver surprisingly deep, well‑controlled bass for the form factor.
- Refined midrange with natural, expressive vocal timbre and seamless driver blending.
Sound Quality
90/100
Bass
91/100
6.5" woofer in a bass-reflex cabinet with quoted -6dB = 38Hz and reviewer praise for 'powerful, controlled bass' supports an excellent result for its size. Ported design and multiple comments about strong low-end give a +1 boost over typical medium-woofer expectations; for its size the bass is notably deep and well-controlled.
Mid
90/100
2" soft-dome midrange and reviewer comments describe 'warm and expressive midtones' and 'natural vocals', indicating very good timbre and presence. Vocals and midband detail are consistently praised, yielding a high score for clarity and body.
Treble
91/100
AMT tweeter is repeatedly credited with 'sparkling high frequencies', 'refined and open' top end and 'minimal distortion', supporting strong extension and air. The treble is both detailed and smooth according to reviews, justifying a top-tier score.
Soundstage Imaging
89/100
Reviewers point to a broad, open presentation and clarity across bands; the AMT and well-integrated mid driver support good width and imaging. While staging is praised as spacious and precise, explicit multi-review claims of extraordinary holographic imaging are absent, so a high-but-not-reference score is appropriate.
Dynamics
89/100
Described as 'rich, dynamic' with 88dB sensitivity and a wide recommended amp range (25–120W), the speakers deliver lively micro- and macro-dynamics when properly driven. Controlled bass and clean treble contribute to convincing punch and transient response for the form factor.

Build Quality
90/100
Features like ResoFrame™ cabinet design, Silentweave™ damping and wood-veneer finishes are cited; reviewers note reduced resonances and refined industrial design. Fit-and-finish and internal engineering details support a high build-quality score.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive bookshelf baseline applied (single-post passive speaker). No bi-wire/bi-amp terminals or DSP included in the reviews; stands are suggested but that does not change passive terminal baseline.
Value for Money
86/100
At the listed price (~1299), reviewers call out 'impressive combination' of tech and sound; performance is strong for the cost but the price sits above entry-level peers. Given the high engineering and finish, this represents good value though not described as a no-brainer bargain by reviewers.
