VAC Amps Master
The design of the all-new VAC Master Preamplifier takes the essential developments from the cost-no-object Statement pre-amplifiers and presents them in their most elemental, effective forms. If the Statement products might be likened to Formula 1 racecars, the Master Preamplifier is the derivative ultra performance road-going sports car.
As in the Statement Line Stage, the volume control is a massive custom-made, multisection, 2.2 kg brass volume control with internal brass shielding. Remote-control capability is implemented via a VAC-designed motor drive system, which allows continuous control of infinite resolution.
All of the hand-wired Class A1 audio circuits are carried on machined, mass-loading plates, which are decoupled from the main chassis.
This projects solidity in detail and imaging while reducing microphony to infinitesimal levels. You’ll find the “naked” z-foil resistors and premium transformers from the Statement Line Stage.
When the Master Preamplifier is equipped with the internal phono option, a separate, dedicated power transformer and DC umbilical cable is added to the power supply, ensuring complete isolation between it and the line section. In essence, it is an external phono stage that just happens to share the chassis, which, in turn, allows a superior control over the ground signal reference that is crucial to conveying signal detail. You’ll also find the same premium resistors and exotic capacitors employed in the Statement Phono Stage.
The VAC Master Preamplifier outperforms every other preamplifier, with the exception of the VAC Statement models that inspired it.

VAC Amps Master — Two-box tube preamplifier
The VAC Master marries classic tube warmth with modern resolution, delivering an open, textured midrange, taut dynamics and a deep, layered soundstage that reviewers found both engaging and revealing. Dave McNair and Garrett Hongo highlight the unit's exceptional musicality and quiet background; the built‑in phono is singled out as a reference‑level performer after break‑in. Engineering is lavish: hand‑wired class‑A circuits, Z‑foil resistors, heavy motorized brass volume control and a separate power supply minimize microphony and noise. Ideal for vinyl lovers and system builders seeking imaging, pace and artisanal build quality. Though positioned in the luxury segment, reviewers conclude the Master rewards high‑end systems with rare combination of technical polish and musical immediacy.
Pros
- Exceptionally musical and transparent linestage: reviewers praised its open midrange, natural timbre and ability to reveal micro- and macro-dynamics while remaining highly listenable.
- Reference-quality built-in phono stage: the internal MM/MC section delivers low noise, rich texture and detailed retrieval once properly run-in, rivaling many standalone phono preamps.
- Top-tier engineering and construction: hand-wired class‑A circuits, Z‑foil resistors, extensive decoupling and a heavy motorized brass volume control produce a robust, low‑noise platform built to last.
- Imaging, soundstage and dynamics: delivers broad, deep staging with strong centerfill and quick, punchy transient response that enhances both orchestral and small‑ensemble recordings.

Cons
- High price places it squarely in the luxury/aspirational category and may be outside reach for many buyers.
- Phono stage benefits from extended break‑in (250+ hours reported) before achieving full robustness and dynamic capability.
- Recommended minimum output load (>300 ohms) may require consideration when pairing with very low‑impedance power amplifiers or specific system loads.
Transparency
93/100
Multiple reviewers call the Master remarkably quiet with effectively zero hum and a very low noise floor (Pt.Audio: "remarkably quiet with a hum level of zero"). SoundStage Solo and others emphasize minimal veil and high resolution in both line and phono sections; while tube circuitry imparts a slight euphonic character, reviewers consistently note that the Master 'gets out of the way' and preserves fine detail.
Sound Quality
92/100
Dynamics
92/100
Dynamics are repeatedly singled out—'great punch and timing' (Audiophilepure), 'drums punched and thunked' and transient responses that are immediate and present (SoundStage). Reviewers note both micro- and macro-dynamic excellence, with only minor comments about the phono needing some break‑in/settling to reach full robustness.
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
The Master excels at space and imaging: reviewers describe deep, broad soundstages, strong centerfill and evocative instrument placement ('air and spaciousness', 'music reached forward from between the speakers') and superb timbral delineation (Audiophilepure and SoundStage). Imaging is consistently praised for layering and depth.

Build Quality
95/100
Construction and parts selection are top-tier: hand‑wired class‑A circuits, exotic capacitors, Z‑foil resistors, heavy motorized brass volume control, and a separate external power supply are all highlighted (SoundStage, Pt.Audio). Reviewers emphasize meticulous wiring/layout and vibration decoupling that both look and function like luxury, long-lasting engineering.
Features Connectivity
92/100
Exceptionally well equipped: multiple selectable RCA/XLR line inputs, dedicated phono (MM/MC), two sets of balanced XLR outputs plus two RCA outputs, cinema bypass, unity‑gain option, remote control, and heavy umbilical connection to an external PSU (Pt.Audio, SoundStage). This rich complement of I/O and options places it well above a minimal line preamp; score reflects full balanced I/O, reference phono, HT bypass and multiple outputs.
Value for Money
89/100
At roughly $28k–$30k for the line stage (with phono as an expensive but praised option), reviewers do not call it cheap but consistently argue the performance justifies the price within its luxury segment (Pt.Audio lists prices; SoundStage calls the phono 'of reference level' and comparable to many standalone units). Sentiment across reviews suggests the Master is a justifiable premium purchase for buyers in this echelon rather than a bargain.
