Tharbamar found the DAC more musical than expected, with a slightly rich tonal balance, exceptionally convincing vocals and natural instrumental realism without fatigue. IWII instead characterises it as tonally flat and neutral, but likewise found it clean, enjoyable and easy to recommend to listeners who appreciate that presentation.

Soundnews awarded resolution 94/100, while IWII calls the D90 III Discrete more revealing than previous Topping DACs, citing clearer tone textures, tiny transients and inner detail. Tharbamar also praises its realism with acoustic instruments, and reports precise stereo imaging.

IWII describes a super-clean sound, with a deep, dark background from which tones emerge clearly defined, stable and well separated. It is also described as fast, snappy and punchy; however, the reviewer heard a small reduction in fidelity, crispness and punch when its PEQ is engaged.

Audiophilepure reports rigid, durable connectors with no wobble and describes the DAC as solid and reliable overall. Soundnews gave build quality 88/100, while the other reviewers offer little further detail on chassis construction or long-term durability.

The D90 III Discrete provides RCA and balanced XLR outputs alongside USB-B, optical, coaxial, AES and IIS digital inputs, plus 12V trigger connections. Its Bluetooth remote works reliably without line-of-sight, and internal DSP supports parametric EQ with up to ten stored profiles, although one reviewer notes that the control software was not Mac-compatible at the time of review.

At $999, Soundnews calls it its favourite DAC under $1,000 and assigns value 95/100. IWII calls it fantastic value, while Tharbamar describes it as a potential giant killer with remarkably musical sound and an unusually compelling feature set at this price.
