Future Audiophile found it retained subtle low-level details and effectively disappeared as a preamp, though WaveTheory and inToit Reviews felt ultimate microdetail, depth and spaciousness trailed some rivals.

Several reviewers describe an ultra-clean but non-edgy sound, with added richness and density versus the earlier A90; Future Audiophile also praised its tonal balance. The Audiophile Man heard controlled, deep bass and clear, emotionally involving mids, while inToit Reviews found the presentation somewhat warm, rounded and occasionally overly thick.

Soundnews calls the A90 Discrete impactful and punchy, and Future Audiophile praised superior dynamics across the frequency range. It drove Dan Clark Stealth loudly with ample volume remaining, and WaveTheory also heard striking macro punch and snare attack, but noted less convincing microdynamic substance; inToit Reviews similarly found dynamics somewhat compressed.

This is one of the A90 Discrete's clearest strengths. Soundnews reported an inaudible noise floor, and Future Audiophile found Empire Audio Zeus IEMs completely silent even at maximum volume on high gain; WaveTheory likewise described a black-void background with no audible noise.

The A90 Discrete combines very high output capability with two gain settings and balanced or single-ended headphone connections. Reviewers report excellent results with sensitive Zeus IEMs and difficult Dan Clark Stealth headphones, while Soundnews says it can drive nearly anything; one dissenting reviewer nevertheless felt there was a performance ceiling with some demanding loads.

Reviewers describe a solid aluminum, unibody-style enclosure, precise stepped-resistor volume control and generally strong ergonomics. Future Audiophile specifically praised its build quality, although Currawong raised an understandable unanswered question about very long-term durability.

The A90 Discrete is unusually flexible for an analog headphone amplifier, with RCA and XLR inputs and outputs, preamp operation, 6.35mm, 4.4mm and four-pin XLR headphone outputs, two gain settings, a display and remote control. It also supports firmware updates, remembers volume by input, includes a 12V trigger, and can accept an optional EXT90 input expander.

At roughly $599, Positive Feedback calls it an incredible bargain and found it nearly competitive with a preamp costing three times as much. Soundnews awarded it its Gold Award, while Future Audiophile said competing products near its price did not match its combination of performance and facilities; WaveTheory is the major dissent, arguing that competing amplifiers deliver a more complete sound for the money.
