The Theory ic6 high-output in-ceiling loudspeaker will change your expectations of small-format, high-efficiency in-ceiling loudspeakers. Via careful processing and computer-optimized tuned ports, the ic6 delivers exceptional low-frequency bandwidth, punch and resolution. Even when used in foreground music applications - no subwoofer is necessary.

But that’s not all. The ic6 offers extremely wide dispersion to highest frequencies (refer to the ic6 Pendant measurements for data), so the coverage area is massive, even when installed in low ceilings.

This is the highest performance 6” ceiling speaker available.

16-ohm and 70V/100V operation.

ACCURATE TIMBRE, ALL THE WAY TO TWENTY.

The ic6 Frequency Response is remarkably flat and extended insuring the highest accuracy and highest-resolution available. Even at very low levels, the sound is crystal clear, open and delicate.

REFLECT. REJOICE.

Even the reflected sound from an ic6 loudspeaker is accurate and extended. The ic6 will fill your room with coherent, accurate sound everywhere. Shown is the CEA2034 for Half Space Estimated In-Room response which predicts the measured response in a typical reflective room.

SOUNDS GOOD EVERYWHERE. EVEN AT THE CEILING.

Even at 90° off-axis - literally at the surface of the ceiling - the response of the ic6 is smooth, with gradual, controlled HF roll off. So should you be up there painting the ceiling, you’re going to enjoy the performance of the ic6.

TIGHT GROUPING.

The ic6 offers wide dispersion all the way to the very top audio octave. Everyone hears wide-band, detailed sound.

140 DEGREES OF FREEDOM

The dispersion of the ic6 exceeds 140° at 12kHz. Even the bad tables in the dining room receive detailed sound.

“SEE” THE SOUND.

Here is the data shown in the Directivity Contour Plot shown again on a polar map, making it easier to “see” how the sound is dispersed from the loudspeaker itself. The 0° axis represents the axis perpendicular to the speaker grille - in order words, that axis straight down when the speaker is mounted into a ceiling. The ic6 coverage is very wide and uniform, all the way to the top audio octave: >120° at -6dB even at 12kHz! Everyone in a broad area receives full-range sound with delicate, extended treble response..

POWER THROUGH.

The Sound Power is the sum of the total output of a loudspeaker. The ic6 Sound Power Response is smooth and extended, indicating that the ic6 will fill a room with neutral, wide-bandwidth sound everywhere.

RESERVE YOUR SPOT.

Theory in-ceiling loudspeaker pre-construction brackets allow you to easily reserve space in the ceiling during the construction phase of the project. Each bracket shows the loudspeaker model number so no errors are made prior to drywall.

NO CEILING? NO PROBLEM.

Theory optional Pendant Housings convert your Theory in-ceiling loudspeaker into a stylish, pendant-style loudspeaker in less than 5 minutes.

DROP CEILING? NO PROBLEM.

A 24” spacing tile bridge kit is available to make installation into drop ceilings painless and secure.

Theory Audio Design ic6 In-Ceiling Loudspeaker — pro-grade, high-output ceiling performance

The ic6 stands out as a professional-grade, high-output coaxial point-source in-ceiling speaker built for installers and serious listeners who need wide coverage and punchy dynamics from a compact 6.5" package. Its 6.5" carbon-fiber low-frequency driver paired with a 1.4" AdvancedPoly compression HF yields deep, controlled bass (–6dB to 68Hz) with an articulate midrange and airy, extended treble when properly DSP‑voiced.

Performance highlights include very high HF sensitivity (106dB) and substantial AES/continuous/peak power handling that deliver dynamic headroom and up to 118dB peak output—ideal for demanding distributed‑audio, outdoor‑capable, or home‑theater ceiling installs. The coaxial architecture and wide conical coverage (125° / 172° figures) promote coherent imaging and consistent in-room response across listening positions.

Mechanically, the ic6 uses a molded ABS frame with a powder-coated steel integral back can and optional all‑weather grille for outdoor use, reflecting robust build quality. Installation is installer-friendly with Euroblock terminals, selectable 16Ω/70V/100V operation and multiple transformer taps.

Best for integrators and audiophiles who will pair it with the required Theory DSP/controller and appropriate amplification; its feature set rewards system-level tuning and professional deployment. Covered by Ian White at ecoustics.

Pros

  • Surprisingly deep, controlled low end for a 6.5" in-ceiling design, thanks to the carbon-fiber LF coaxial driver and sealed integral back can.
  • Coaxial point-source layout and clear midrange deliver strong vocal intelligibility and stable imaging across wide listening areas.
  • High sensitivity and robust power ratings provide excellent micro- and macro-dynamics with high max SPL for demanding installs.
  • Solid mechanical construction and weather‑resistant options (optional all‑weather grille) make it suitable for indoor/outdoor professional use.

&

Cons

  • Requires a model‑specific Theory DSP controller and compatible amp for optimal voicing, which raises total system cost and complexity.
  • High HF sensitivity and compression driver can sound bright if not properly DSP‑tuned for the room.

Sound Quality

88/100

Bass

89/100

6.5" carbon-fiber LF coax in a sealed/integral backcan with -6dB bandwidth to 68Hz (and -10dB to 58Hz) plus high sensitivity and high power handling yields impressively deep and controlled low end for a 6.5" in-ceiling design. Requires Model-specific DSP/Controller for optimal low-frequency voicing, which the spec sheet mandates.

Mid

90/100

Coaxial 6.5" driver with a dedicated compression HF unit and a high LF/HF sensitivity differential suggests clear, cohesive midrange with strong vocal presence and low coloration; design favors intelligibility and consistency in-room.

Treble

88/100

1.4" AdvancedPoly compression driver and extended HF response (to 23–25kHz) plus very high HF sensitivity (106dB) indicate airy, detailed treble with good output; requires proper DSP tuning to avoid brightness in some installations.

Soundstage Imaging

86/100

Coaxial point-source architecture and wide specified dispersion (125° / 172° conical figures) promote coherent imaging and broad coverage for ceiling-mount use, delivering stable images for nearby listeners while minimizing off-axis anomalies.

Dynamics

88/100

High sensitivity (92dB LF) plus substantial AES/continuous/peak power ratings and 112–118dB output capability provide strong micro- and macro-dynamics for its class; final performance will depend on the recommended amplifier/controller.

Build Quality

90/100

Molded ABS frame with powder-coated steel integral back can, weather-resistant options and substantial 12.5 lb net weight point to robust mechanical construction suitable for indoor/outdoor installations when paired with the optional grille.

Features Connectivity

82/100

Passive baseline applied (single-channel passive operation). Euroblock connector with parallel output, selectable 16Ω / 70V/100V operation and transformer taps increase installer flexibility compared with a basic single-post passive, thus a small positive adjustment within passive bounds.

Value for Money

72/100

At the provided price point ($1,000) the ic6 offers pro-grade features (weather resistance, high output, Hi‑Z options) but also requires a model-specific Theory DSP/controller and a compatible amp, raising total system cost; value is strong for pro installers but less so for casual buyers.
