TEAC- USA TEAC VRDS-701 Dual Monaural USB/DAC CD Player/Pre-Amp/Headphone Amplifier
The VRDS-701 does it all. As a dual mono USB digital-to-analog convertor (DAC), pre-amplifier, headphone amplifier, and CD player, this product captures all the information you need to hear music just the way it was intended.
The VRDS-701 utilizes TEAC's proprietary ΔΣ (Delta Sigma) 32-bit discrete DAC which is comprised of discrete circuitry using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and incorporating original algorithms on both channels. The end result? Improved signal to noise (S/N) ratio – each channel processes in monaural mode and delivers DSD512 (22.5MHz) native and 384kHz/32-bit pulse-code modulation (PCM) playback capabilities.
With a full MQA decoder built-in, your highest res file formats such as FLAC and WAV will playback with all the quality and depth of the original recording. Great for those seeking a powerful and refined approach to high fidelity home entertainment.
The pinnacle in CD transport technology, this single-well CD Player utilizes a Vibration-Free Rigid Disc-Clamping System (VRDS) derived from the TEAC’s flagship HiFi line, Esoteric. Incorporating our newly developed Delta Sigma 32-bit discrete DAC and functioning as a preamplifier, the VRDS-701 matches seamlessly with the TEAC AP-701B Stereo Power Amplifier.
This TEAC-original CD drive mechanism reduces rotation vibration of the disc itself, as well as unwanted mechanism vibration by clamping the CD to an aluminum turntable with the same diameter and maximizing inertial mass in order to stabilize rotation. Servo current is reduced with the turntable by correcting disc warping and distortion and improving the relative optical axis precision of the pickup and disc pit side. This realizes reduced disc reading errors and creates outstanding audio quality.
Four TEAC HCLD buffer amp circuits allow different drive modes (fully balanced and parallel), working in-sync with TEAC QVCS volume control for ideal sound quality. The VRDS-701 also features three upconversion settings: 2x, 4x, and 8x.
Featuring a dedicated driver that uses a high-output circuit with low distortion, the VRDS-701’s headphone amplifier achieves a high S/N ratio and 2000V/μs through rate, equivalent to a current transmission enhancing output line driver. This will maximize the potential of your headphones so you can kick back and relax in perfect stereo.
Ensure accurate timing and synchronization with dual on-board clocks.
Using Bulk Pet USB transmission technology, the VRDS-701 achieves constant transmission at a fixed data volume, enabling steady data transmission by smoothing the loads for processing via transmitting computer and receiving USB DAC. Since the audio quality can be altered by changing the load on the computer, four preset transmission modes can be chosen according to the desired audio quality.

TEAC VRDS-701 Dual Monaural USB/DAC CD Player/Pre-Amp/Headphone Amplifier
Built around TEAC’s vibration‑free VRDS clamping and a custom FPGA, the VRDS‑701 is a single‑box reference for CD enthusiasts that emphasizes musical clarity, scale and consistency. Audiophilia highlights its revealing midrange, expansive soundstage and strong dynamic headroom from balanced outputs and the variable analog attenuator. Machined aluminum casework, rack‑friendly details and a quiet, robust tray speak to its pro‑grade build. Connectivity is comprehensive—XLR/RCA, USB‑C (DSD capable), fixed/variable outputs and a built‑in headphone amp—making the unit a versatile digital hub. For listeners who prize faithful CD playback or want a capable all‑digital preamp, the VRDS‑701 pairs practical features with reference-grade sonic character and dependable transport performance.
Pros
- Reference-level transparency and detail retrieval that reveals wider, deeper images and lets recordings sound more present.
- Pro‑grade build with TEAC’s VRDS disc‑clamping system, machined aluminum casework and quiet, smooth tray operation.
- Feature‑rich connectivity and flexible signal paths—custom FPGA DSD-capable DAC, USB‑C, balanced XLR/RCA, fixed/variable outputs and a headphone amp—make it a versatile digital hub.
- Reliable transport mechanics that read aging CD‑Rs and archival discs without skips, useful for collectors.
&
Cons
- Built‑in headphone amp is not an ideal match for very high‑impedance (300 Ω) headphones—best for easy‑to‑drive cans or users with a dedicated amp.
- Remote control layout uses many similar buttons, which can make operation fiddly without looking.
- Plays only Red Book CDs (no SACD/universal disc playback), which limits format flexibility for some buyers.
Transparency
91/100
Reviewer repeatedly describes the VRDS-701 as a reference player that reveals more of the recording and 'gives me most of what was on every single track', implying very low coloration. Spec S/N of 105 dB and THD of 0.002% back up a low noise, clean signal chain; no reviewers reported hiss/hum. The unit's balanced analog variable gain attenuator and dual-monaural design further support high transparency.
Sound Quality
90/100
Dynamics
90/100
Reviewer reports ample dynamics and drive from the built-in headphone amp ('plenty of power, dynamics and soundstage') and general listening impressions emphasize a lively, present presentation. The dual-monaural architecture and generous variable output levels (up to 12 Vrms on XLR) suggest strong gain structure and dynamic headroom.
Soundstage Imaging
91/100
The review highlights scale and space—'walls fell away more convincingly, putting me in the church'—which signals excellent depth and imaging precision. Consistent channel balance from the balanced variable attenuator and dual-mono layout supports strong spatial performance.
