The Starke Sound A3 Amplifier

Over the years, home theater amplifiers have achieved strong performance, but often with a focus on power parameters at the expense of sound quality. Starke Sound's “A Series” are designed with a comprehensive objective in mind: high-power, multi-channel amplifiers with perfect sound quality. The new, 3-channel, A3 model applies Starke Sound's unique Class A+AB power amplifier design (3rd generation), with an output of up to 620 watts per channel at 4Ω, a fully balanced topology, and a power supply capacitor array delivering up to 80,000 microfarads.

It is an extremely high bias design that maintains Class A operation for music or audio signals in most applications. With very large signals, typically 1% of content, A3 enters Class AB to completely ensure that the dynamics of the system are not compressed. In other words, this is a pure Class A amplifier with high power reserves.

An aluminum alloy and copper hybrid heat dissipation system eliminates the need for fans, ensuring silent operation and higher-quality audio output. The center channel of A3 has an input switch. When you turn off this switch, A3 becomes a pure 2-channel amplifier with proportionally higher power supply reserves.

A3's ultra-low distortion, abundant energy, and flexibility make it ideal to serve as the core driving force behind private theaters and Hi-Fi systems.

Key Features:

  • Linear amplification (Class A) and fully balanced amplification circuits
  • 3 channels, up to 800 watts each
  • Seamless A + AB switching technology
  • Fanless Design
  • High grade input and output terminals

Starke Sound A3 Three Channel Amplifier

The Starke Sound A3 is a purpose-built, high-current workhorse delivering massive, clean power and refined musicality. With Class A+AB topology (50W Class A per channel) and specs such as 320W RMS into 8Ω, it offers exceptional headroom and slam for demanding loudspeakers. Sonically the A3 balances taut, unstressed bass with silky mids and clear treble — violins remain detailed without harshness while complex organ and orchestral peaks stay controlled. Imaging is precise, preserving separation and realistic instrument placement, and dynamics excel on power tests like Copland's Fanfare. Built like a tank (83.6 lb chassis, 24K gold XLRs, CNC beryllium-copper binding posts), it uses a twist-lock 32A inlet and requires robust AC provisioning. Ideal for audiophiles who need theater-scale dynamics and studio-quality clarity, the A3 is a high-end, no-compromise amplifier.

HomeTheaterHifi

"It contains distortion in a narrow range throughout its power output capability."

Pros

  • Massive, reliable power and headroom — meets/specs and bench results confirm sustained high output into 8Ω/4Ω for demanding speakers.
  • Controlled distortion and transparent mid/treble — preserves detail and natural harmonic character even at high output.
  • Excellent imaging and dynamics — strong separation, realistic instrument placement, and authoritative transient impact on orchestral material.

&

Cons

  • Very heavy (83.6 lb) — requires a sturdy equipment rack and careful handling during installation.
  • Uses a twist-lock, high-current 32A inlet and can trip domestic circuits — needs dedicated power provisioning and the supplied special power cable.
  • No single-ended RCA inputs on the rear panel — exclusively balanced XLR inputs may require adapter or compatible preamplifier.

Dynamics

92/100

Reviewers repeatedly note strong, authoritative power delivery: the A3 handled Copland's Fanfare with 'glorious' cymbals, bass drums and trumpets and delivered deep bass 'without strain.' The spec sheet (300–320 W/ch into 8 Ω, 100 A peak current, Class A+AB with 50 W Class A window) supports high headroom and current delivery. Overall this is excellent dynamic control and slam for its power class.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

Imaging and separation are highlighted: choir voices stayed 'separate and distinguishable' and lute plucks were rendered with lifelike realism and projection. The amp preserves spatial cues even under demanding material, supporting excellent channel separation and convincing scale.

Build Quality

89/100

The physical specs (83.6 lb chassis, 32 A power inlet, 24K gold-plated XLRs, beryllium-copper binding posts, 100 A output current) point to a robust power supply and premium connectors. No reviewer criticism of construction or thermal issues was reported; design appears solid and purpose-built for high-current delivery.

Value for Money

86/100

Price was provided ($6,900) but reviewers did not comment on value; per guidelines, this yields a neutral baseline. Given the amp's high power, Class A+AB capability and premium parts, the price seems within expectations for its segment, but no reviewer explicitly judged its value.
