Once your chat is over, your music starts playing again automatically.3

Silence meets sparkle with the Sony WH-1000XM5: class-leading noise cancelling clears the commute for a musical, detailed presentation with agile bass, assured rhythm and clear calls. What Hi-Fi? applauds its clarity and timing, while Sound Advice highlights comfort, fast charging and long-haul usability. A polished wireless all-rounder built for immersive everyday listening.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Pros
Outstanding active noise cancelling effectively suppresses travel drones, conversations and everyday background noise.
Clear, entertaining sound with agile bass, strong timing and convincing detail.
Comfortable for long sessions, with a useful feature set including multipoint, rapid charging and strong call quality.
&
Cons
The earcups fold flat but do not fold inward, resulting in a larger carry case than the previous generation.
The warm tuning sacrifices some treble air and can make bass definition or instrument separation less precise on demanding recordings.
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 86/100
The WH-1000XM5 is widely praised as a musical, smooth and capable wireless headphone, with especially strong clarity, rhythmic assurance and an easygoing tonal character. Its warm tuning, unevenness through parts of the response, reduced top-end air and occasionally constrained instrument separation keep it from sounding wholly neutral or audiophile-grade.
Bass
87/100
What Hi-Fi finds the bass precise, agile and more articulate than the XM4's, while Sound Advice hears deep, textured and controlled low frequencies. Other reviewers hear a pronounced mid-bass emphasis, extra thump or softer definition, so impact is plentiful but not uniformly taut or linear.
Midrange
86/100
Several reviewers praise clear vocals, engaging upper-mid presence and pleasing musicality; Audiophilia in particular calls the mids the headphones' strongest area. Conversely, The Absolute Sound hears a hooded, cupped quality, while ecoustics finds lower mids recessed enough to leave male voices and lower strings somewhat dull.
Treble
83/100
The treble is generally smooth and non-fatiguing, with SoundStage Solo calling it delicate and detailed despite limited openness. However, multiple reviewers note reduced air, roll-off at the top, occasional brightness or shout at high volume, and a hashy or splattery quality on some material.
Resolution Detail
88/100
Sound Advice and What Hi-Fi praise fine-detail retrieval, clarity and the ability to expose harmonic and low-level information. The Absolute Sound is less convinced, describing the presentation as not highly resolving, while other comments suggest good texture and detail rather than class-leading transparency.
Soundstage Imaging
84/100
SoundStage Solo reports impressive stereo spread, with wide-panned elements extending beyond the shoulders, and Sound Advice also praises the headphones' staging. Still, ecoustics finds the presentation fairly intimate, and Audiophilia notes that instrumental separation can fall short when mixes become busy.
Dynamics
88/100
Sound Advice hears considerable dynamic headroom and convincing attack and decay, while What Hi-Fi praises the XM5's rhythm, drive and handling of dynamic shifts. The warmer, softer voicing is less overtly punchy for The Absolute Sound, but reviewers generally find the headphones composed and lively rather than congested.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Comfort Fit
88/100
Reviewers consistently find the XM5 comfortable over extended sessions: Sound Advice reports comfort lasting four hours, and The Absolute Sound praises the light weight and secure but sensible clamp. Memory-foam and protein-leather pads are also singled out positively, with no repeated reports of serious pressure or heat issues.
Build Quality
83/100
Direct construction commentary is limited. What Hi-Fi says the new model feels a little less premium than its predecessor, while PortaFi positively notes the well-executed carrying case; reviewers otherwise say little about long-term durability or the headband and hinge mechanism.
Features Usability
94/100
Noise cancelling is a major strength, repeatedly described as among the best available and highly effective against travel and everyday background noise. The feature set is also notably complete, including multipoint pairing, rapid USB-PD charging, ambient and automatic transparency functions, app adjustment, wired use and dependable wireless range.
Value for Money
87/100
At its original roughly $400 price, SoundStage Solo considers it somewhat expensive, while The Absolute Sound calls it pretty good for a Bluetooth noise-cancelling model below that figure. More positive assessments describe it as a class-leading proposition against similarly priced rivals, and later price drops improve the appeal further.
