Value for Money

The UBP-X800 delivers rhythmic, expressive sound and reference-grade video processing for disc libraries spanning 4K Blu-ray, SACD and DVD-Audio. What Hi-Fi highlights its detailed, stable picture and musical dynamics, while dual HDMI outputs, Bluetooth transmission and broad format support make it an unusually versatile home-cinema transport.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Pros
Musical, detailed and dynamically lively sound with clear dialogue and natural instrumental texture.
Excellent video processing, with crisp, stable 4K images and strong DVD scaling, deinterlacing and cadence handling.
Exceptional disc-format flexibility, including Ultra HD Blu-ray, SACD and DVD-Audio, plus dual HDMI outputs for separating audio and video.
&
Cons
Dolby Vision must be manually enabled and disabled rather than switching automatically by content.
No HDR10+ support, and Netflix playback does not deliver Dolby Atmos audio.
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 91/100
Reviewers find the Sony unusually musical and expressive for a multi-format 4K disc player. It combines natural dialogue, rhythmic drive and strong large-scale dynamics with an open, precisely organized presentation.
Tonal Balance Musicality
92/100
What Hi-Fi praises sweet, natural strings, convincing dialogue and a wonderfully musical character. HomeTheaterHifi likewise heard accurate, neutral reproduction, while the earlier What Hi-Fi review described a light, insightful presentation with expressive low-level shifts.
Resolution Detail
91/100
What Hi-Fi reports dynamics and detail in abundance, including subtle vocal inflections that rivals struggle to reproduce. The earlier review also highlights the shine of high-frequency effects, insight into hushed moments, and well-defined placement of individual sounds.
Digital Performance
91/100
HomeTheaterHifi found the player accurate and neutral across its disc formats, with seamless SACD and DVD-Audio playback. It also passed demanding video-processing tests, including difficult cadence material and 24p playback, without issue.
FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 86/100
This is an exceptionally format-flexible disc player with sensible connection options, Bluetooth transmission and broad file support. Its interface is deliberately simple rather than sophisticated, but reviewers found setup and routine operation straightforward.
Streaming Software
84/100
Alpha Audio calls the menu minimalistic, with direct access to disc, USB, network and settings, plus Netflix and YouTube. Most settings can be left on Auto according to HomeTheaterHifi, though the platform is clearly geared toward straightforward playback rather than deep streaming-library management.
Features Connectivity
92/100
The dual HDMI outputs allow audio and video to be split for compatibility with older receivers or soundbars, while coaxial, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and front USB broaden system options. SACD, DVD-Audio, Ultra HD Blu-ray, high-resolution file playback and LDAC Bluetooth output make it notably versatile for its intended role.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
89/100
HomeTheaterHifi describes a solidly built, compact chassis that sits unobtrusively in a rack. The reviews provide little further detail on the transport mechanism or long-term durability, but report no physical concerns.
Value for Money
92/100
At roughly $300 to $330, What Hi-Fi calls the player a real entertainer for the money and recommends it as the inexpensive 4K HDR Blu-ray player to buy. In comparison with the Panasonic DP-UB820, the Sony was judged more fleet-footed and rhythmically engaging, while retaining unusually broad disc and audio-format support at this price.
