Lumina II Amator is a passive bookshelf speaker that builds on the strengths of its predecessor, Lumina II, with improved performance and upgraded crossover technology.

AMATOR HERITAGE

Amator is an evocative name, which has always characterized all the special Sonus faber models, becoming synonymous with uniqueness. Any market enthusiast knows that from this name it is right to expect an exciting and engaging listen.

MADE IN ITALY

Made in Sonus faber’s Vicenza, Italy factory, Lumina Amator incorporates iconic Sonus faber design materials, including wood and leather. Lumin II Amator features the simple squared design of the Lumina collection with new front panels featuring 45-degree woodgrain lacquered veneers.

IMPROVED CROSSOVER

The Lumina II Amator crossovers have been designed, inheriting the legacy left by the development of the new Homage collection. Many of the solutions adopted on the new special models are derived from those of the Amati G5 and Guarneri G5.

Lumina Amator II boasts an upgraded crossover network at 2600 Hz, an 800 Hz improvement from Lumina II, elevating the overall listening experience to new heights.

SIMPLICITY AND STYLE

Lumina takes note of Sonus faber’s iconic natural materials.

SIMPLICITY, STYLE, AND PERFORMANCE

Lumina takes note from core Sonus faber technologies, design, and manufacturing principles – transforming them into a beautifully minimalistic masterpiece, made in Italy.

TWEETER

The iconic D.A.D. (Damped Apex Dome) tweeter, the same used in the Sonetto series, features a Kurtmueller hand coated soft silk diaphragm of 29mm. The chrome rings around the drivers highlight their shapes and proportions and give brightness to the front baffle.

MIDWOOFER

Lumina II Amator features a 4’’ midwoofer developed for this collection. It is equipped with a custom-made basket and a diaphragm composed of cellulose pulp blended with other natural fibers.

IFF CROSSOVER

The IFF circuitry and the phase coherent philosophy ensure perfect rendering of the virtual sound stage in three dimensions. The new filters also offer greater resolution and more rigorous and coherent reproduction.

Nicely Roasted

Sonus Faber's Lumina II Amator pairs elegant Italian build with a remarkably textured, musical presentation, leading with a clear midrange, expansive wide soundstage and surprisingly controlled bass for its size. Reviewers from HomeTheaterHifi and SoundStage Solo praise its cohesion and value, while noting treble can lean forward on bright recordings.

HomeTheaterHifi

"They are unfailingly neutral and clear with the precision and detail you’d expect from a much more expensive speaker."

Pros

  • Rich, natural midrange that delivers expressive, well-textured vocals and instrument timbre.
  • Impressively wide, deep and well-layered soundstage with stable imaging uncommon in small standmounts.
  • Surprising low-frequency extension and controlled bass for a compact vented design, giving punch without obvious distortion.
  • High-quality Italian build and finish that feels premium for the price, delivering strong value for money.

&

Cons

  • Treble can be somewhat forward on bright recordings or with direct on-axis placement, which may emphasize sharpness at high levels.
  • Benefits from careful positioning and quality amplification—sensitivity and 4Ω nominal impedance demand a capable partner for best results.
  • Some cosmetic compromises (plastic plinth/terminals) slightly temper an otherwise very upscale finish.

Bass

90/100

For its size the vented 150mm mid-woofer delivers surprisingly deep, punchy, and controlled bass (reviews: “surprisingly deep for its size”, down to ~55–60Hz). Multiple reviewers note good low-end weight and punch though placement close to walls can produce muddiness; ported design helps extension (+port).

Mid

92/100

Reviewers consistently praise the clear, natural midband and expressive vocals (e.g., Stevie Nicks, Elliott Smith), with seamless driver integration and cohesive presentation (“impossible to sense the handoff between midwoofer and tweeter”). Midrange is rich, well textured and authoritative.

Treble

88/100

Treble is detailed and airy thanks to the DAD tweeter, providing good sparkle and extension, but can be a touch forward on bright recordings or when fired directly at the listener (“somewhat heightened”, “too hard in the treble” if toed-in). High-frequency percussion is lively but occasionally skirts sharpness at high levels.

Soundstage Imaging

92/100

Multiple reviewers highlight an impressively wide, deep and well-layered soundstage for small standmounts (“spectacular dimensionality”, “extends deep from front to back”, “wide sound stage”). Imaging is focused and stable with excellent instrument separation.

Dynamics

86/100

Can play loud without obvious distortion and shows good punch on midrange and bass percussion, but some reviewers note slightly limited snap/timing compared with the very best (e.g., not quite PMC-like transient snap). Good macro- and micro-dynamic ability for the class.

Build Quality

90/100

Premium-looking Italian build with leather-clad cabinet and high-quality drivers; reviewers praise finish and craftsmanship. Minor gripes: functional-looking plastic plinth and slightly bland terminals that temper an otherwise very upscale presentation.

Features Connectivity

82/100

Passive bookshelf baseline applied (80) plus biwire/bi-amp capable binding posts (+2). Forward-firing port and jumper-equipped dual binding posts documented; no DSP/streaming expected for a passive design.

Value for Money

90/100

At $1,499 a pair reviewers call them terrific value and reasonably priced for the build and sound quality (“price seems reasonable”, “terrific value”, “could have hiked the price by hundreds”). Strong performance per dollar in this segment.
