Sonus Faber Lilium
The Duality of Sound
A harmony of opposites, Lilium is designed to synthesize opposing elements while maintaining each one’s independent nature.
TRADITION AND INNOVATION
Lilium unites two cabinets into a unique fusion of style and technology. This endeavor captures Sonus faber's heritage while embracing groundbreaking innovations by our Research and Development team. Lilium harmonizes two distinct acoustic chambers to deliver both powerful low frequencies as well as the heart of the sound spectrum in pristine fashion.
CONTRAST AND COMPLEMENT
The lyre-shaped front cabinet, designed for forward sound emission, ensures structural strength and efficient energy management. Meanwhile, the rear cabinet, designed for infra-low frequencies, eliminates resonance with strategic reinforcements. Lilium's front and rear cabinets use different materials – finely grained hard walnut wood for the front and soft leather for the rear - a design that reinforces the duality of the speaker’s engineering philosophy.
THE SHAPE OF NATURAL SOUND
Deriving its name from the Latin word for “lily”, Lilium’s design seamlessly merges two distinct identities within a classical "lyre" silhouette. This synthesis of natural shapes exudes grace and harmony. Its top plate, made of tempered glass, mirrors the lily's form, revealing the passive radiator beneath. Infra-low frequencies travel through the pavement for optimal sound dispersion, and frequency modulation fine-tunes the passive radiator's movement.
LILIUM’S STRIKING FINISHES
Contrasting materials, enhanced by Sonus faber’s signature wood cabinet finishes.
The essence of lilium
“Strong contrasts, seemingly total opposites, form in the music that accompanies our lives. Lilium is designed to give shape and form to these musical expressions; offering a synthesis of these opposing elements, while maintaining their independent nature, and delivering them within a single form.”
Livio Cucuzza, Chief Design Officer
Lyre Shape
The dual "waved" curvature of the "lyre" shape in the front cabinet enhances structural strength for optimal energy management in forward sound emission.
Rear Cabinet
The rear cabinet, dedicated to infra-low frequencies, is designed with sophisticated reinforcing structures, strategically placed within the enclosure to eliminate resonances and unwanted interference.
Contrasting Materials
The separation between Lilium’s two cabinets is visually enhanced by the use of contrasting materials: fine-grained walnut wood in the front and soft leather in the rear enclosure.
Tempered Glass
The tempered glass top plate, shaped like a lily, reveals the passive radiator's movement through its transparency.
Infra-woofer
The infra-woofer operates in "P.Z.I." (Pressure Zone Interface) acoustic conditions, creating a ground effect for optimal interaction with the environment and infra-low frequencies. The output level can be adjusted with the "Deep Low Control" for seamless speaker integration in each unique environment.

Sonus Faber Lilium delivers astonishing, room-filling imaging with lifelike midrange clarity and low distortion even at very high levels. Reviewers such as John E. Johnson, Jr. singled out its expansive orchestral soundstage, precise midrange detail and sustained dynamics, while hand-finished cabinetry confirms the speakers' premium construction.
Pros
- Lifelike midrange clarity and detailed instrument separation — reviewers report exceptional presence and realism.
- Outstanding dynamics and very low distortion at high volumes, preserving transients and headroom.
- Exceptional build and finish — heavy, meticulously crafted cabinets and premium materials underline the luxury fit and finish.
&
Cons
- Relatively modest deep-bass extension in-room; reviewers recommend adding a dedicated subwoofer for very deep, pounding bass.
- Extremely large and heavy (227 lb / 103 kg per speaker), requiring careful handling, placement and professional installation.

Bass
90/100
Triple 7" woofers plus 10" passive radiator and 20 Hz claimed FR give strong low-end potential, but multiple reviewers noted the low-frequency output as 'modest' and recommended a sub for deep, pounding bass. Conservative high score within the reference tower band, acknowledging excellent extension but real-world room dependence.
Mid
96/100
Reviewers repeatedly praised lifelike clarity, detailed vocals and excellent instrument timbre; descriptions such as 'clarity and detail were simply stunning' and 'life‑like volume without audible distortion' support a reference-level midrange performance.
Treble
92/100
High-frequency detail and refinement are highlighted, with a warm character (even-order harmonic emphasis). Some off-axis attenuation above ~16 kHz was noted but remained 'quite listenable,' so treble is highly refined without excessive air.
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
Reviews describe a very large, room-filling soundstage with exceptional separation and ambiance ('huge', 'instrument separation'), though imaging is more expansively layered than narrowly pinpointed; excellent spatial performance overall.
Dynamics
96/100
Low distortion at high volumes and authoritative transient behavior were repeatedly mentioned ('shines when the volume is cranked', 'distinct leading edges'), indicating outstanding micro/macro dynamics and headroom when properly driven.

Build Quality
98/100
Multiple reviewers call out 'fabulous', 'gorgeous' and 'stellar' construction; heavy, intricately engineered cabinets and premium materials corroborate a near-reference level of fit, finish and mechanical design.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive tower baseline applied. Speaker provides 6 binding posts (Mid-Hi, Low, Sub) enabling bi-amping/bi-wiring and has decoupling (ZVT). Score capped at passive-tower bounds per rules.
Value for Money
62/100
At a $75,000 price point reviewers praise performance and aesthetics but do not describe the speakers as exceptional value; steep cost limits value score despite top-tier engineering and sound.
