Pass Labs HPA-1c
The Pass Labs HPA-1c pairs low-noise Class A authority with a revised supply engineered for lower distortion, giving demanding planar headphones the current they crave. Srajan Ebaen highlights its substantial drive and persuasive sound, while the switched line output adds a minimalist preamp role for focused two-source systems.

Pros
Revised power supply is reported to lower noise floor and distortion, supporting cleaner signal performance.
3.5W output into 20 ohms provides substantial Class A drive for demanding low-impedance headphones, including Susvara- and Magna-class loads.
Switched line output allows the amplifier to serve as a simple preamp in compact two-source systems.
Cons
Connectivity is limited to two single-ended inputs, with no balanced input option.
Preamp operation lacks remote control and is deliberately bare-bones by contemporary standards.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 84/100
The available review material points to a cleaner revised power supply and substantial Class A drive, particularly for demanding low-impedance headphones. There is little direct listening description of tonal character, resolution, or dynamic expression, so the evidence is strongest around low-noise potential and output capability rather than a complete sonic portrait.
Transparency Resolution
84/100
The revised supply is described as providing superior signal-to-noise ratio and sonics, while Pass Labs says distortion is lower than before. The review does not provide detailed listening observations about separation, low-level detail, air, or perceived resolution.
Tonal Balance Musicality
80/100
The review says the sound compensates for the unit's deliberately bare-bones control set, but does not characterize its tonal balance. There is no specific evidence on warmth, neutrality, timbre, treble character, or long-session musicality.
Dynamics
85/100
The unchanged Class A MOSFET circuit supplies 3.5W into 20 ohms, and the reviewer considers its roughly 3W-at-32-ohm capability sufficient even for difficult loads such as HiFiMAN Susvara and RAAL Magna. That suggests meaningful current delivery for challenging low-impedance headphones, though there is little direct description of transient attack or macro-dynamic impact.
Noise Floor
87/100
Wayne Coburn states that the new power supply lowers the noise floor and distortion, with the revision explicitly intended to improve signal-to-noise performance. No listening report addresses hiss with sensitive IEMs or residual hum, so its behavior with the most sensitive loads remains unconfirmed.
Headphone Compatibility
86/100
With 3.5W into 20 ohms, sub-2-ohm output impedance, and reviewer confidence for Susvara-class loads, the HPA-1c appears well suited to difficult low-impedance planar headphones. Its modest 8dB gain and 200mW rating into 300 ohms warrant some caution for unusually voltage-hungry high-impedance headphones, and the review provides no sensitive-IEM pairing evidence.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
80/100
The review identifies a new power-supply implementation and notes the compact, substantial 23W Class A operating design, but offers little direct assessment of chassis execution, controls, connectors, or long-term reliability. Finish is available in black or silver, though cosmetic options alone say little about durability.
Features Usability
81/100
The HPA-1c has two single-ended inputs, a switched line output that can serve as a minimalist preamplifier, and a simple front-panel headphone/speaker mode switch. It lacks balanced inputs, a built-in DAC, remote control, and other modern convenience features; the reviewer specifically calls the preamp utility bare-bones by contemporary standards.
Value for Money
85/100
At approximately $3,995 to $4,045, this is a premium-purpose headphone amplifier with a particularly minimalist feature set. The review does not compare it with price rivals or make a clear judgment on whether its sound and build justify the asking price.

Manufacturer's Description — Pass Labs
Introducing the HPA-1c — A Classic, Refined
Building on the legacy of the award-winning HPA-1, the new HPA-1c raises the bar in headphone amplification. While the core amplifier circuit remains true to its original, highly regarded design, we've taken the opportunity to refine and enhance its performance.
Driven by the need to replace end-of-life components, the HPA-1c features an upgraded power supply and improved circuit board grounding. These updates deliver a cleaner, more stable power foundation—resulting in lower noise, tighter regulation, and a blacker background.
We've also added local regulation to the servo circuitry and achieved approximately a 10 dB improvement in overall noise performance. The result? Greater low-level detail and improved clarity, especially with high-sensitivity headphones where it matters most.
In addition to its excellence as a headphone amplifier, the HPA-1c continues to function as a high-performance line-level preamplifier. With its discrete, class A design and robust output stage, it's equally at home at the heart of a reference speaker system.
Headphone Output:
The HPA-1 delivers up to 2 watts into 32 ohms, with a low output impedance of 2 Ohms.
It's designed to drive most dynamic and planar magnetic headphones with authority, including low-impedance and high-sensitivity models.
Preamplifier Output:
The preamp section is capable of driving a typical power amplifier load (10kΩ or higher) with very low output impedance.
