Onkyo TX-8470
The Onkyo TX-8470 pairs a neutral, detailed presentation with unusually expansive stereo-receiver connectivity: four HDMI 2.1 inputs, high-resolution digital playback and flexible streaming. HIFI Trends highlights its powerful amplification and DAC, while its 8K-ready HDMI section makes it a compelling hub for music, television and gaming systems.

Pros
Extensive modern connectivity includes four HDMI 2.1 inputs, ARC, 8K/60 and 4K/120 pass-through, plus USB, optical, coaxial and network streaming.
Detailed DAC, powerful amplification and a versatile feature set earn praise for delivering engaging hi-fi performance.
Neutral tonal balance with a clean midrange and respectable treble extension suits a wide range of speakers and music.
Cons
Power control and dynamics are limited at very low and high listening levels; the sound can become vague, strained and spatially compressed when pushed.
No bass management or meaningful room correction, notable omissions at this price.
Treble can sound dry and two-dimensional, and demanding floorstanding speakers may not be an ideal match.

What Reviewers Are Saying
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 79/100
Listening impressions are divided. HIFI Trends hears thrilling, high-performing sound and a detailed DAC, while Andrew Robinson finds the presentation neutral but somewhat dry, two-dimensional and less engaging outside a limited volume range.
Transparency Resolution
80/100
HIFI Trends specifically praises the detailed DAC and compelling hi-fi presentation. Andrew Robinson hears decent treble extension, but finds the upper range comparatively dry and lacking air, which limits its sense of openness.
Tonal Balance Musicality
81/100
Andrew Robinson describes the overall balance and midrange as neutral, with no frequency band standing out unnaturally. However, he also finds the receiver relatively uninvolving at lower levels, while HIFI Trends offers a much more enthusiastic view of its musical appeal.
Dynamics
76/100
The 110W-per-channel Class G-style amplifier delivers useful output on paper, and HIFI Trends calls the amplification powerful. In listening, Andrew Robinson finds little presence below roughly 50–55dB, reasonable contrast through the mid-volume range, and strain with reduced subtlety at louder levels.
Soundstage Imaging
78/100
Andrew Robinson says the TX-8470 generally preserves the inherent spatial abilities of the connected speakers. At higher levels, though, the image reportedly bunches toward the speaker baffles rather than remaining freely projected into the room.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
50/100
The supplied reviews do not offer meaningful commentary on chassis construction, internal parts quality, thermal behavior or long-term durability. They therefore say little about how the TX-8470 is built beyond its stated amplifier design.
Features Connectivity
92/100
The TX-8470 is exceptionally well equipped for a stereo receiver, with two optical inputs, coaxial, USB, four HDMI 2.1 inputs and HDMI output with ARC. Its HDMI section supports 8K/60, 4K/120, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG pass-through, though Andrew Robinson notes the absence of bass management and substantial room correction.
Value for Money
81/100
At $899.99, HIFI Trends calls the TX-8470 affordable and praises its combination of sound and modern connectivity. The value case is complicated by Andrew Robinson's comparison with Onkyo's RZ50 AVR, which he says costs roughly $100 more while bringing more power, connectivity, stronger sound and Dirac room correction.
