Value for Money

91/100

The Nagaoka MP-500 delivers weighty, tuneful bass, a silky treble and remarkably secure groove handling, bringing moving-coil-like openness to a standard MM input. StereoNET United Kingdom praises its immersive dimensionality, while HiFi News highlights rich textures, musical ease and exceptional tracking. It is a refined flagship for revealing vinyl systems without MC complexity.

What Reviewers Are Saying

"It’s surely the best of its type around – and certainly the finest moving magnet that I have heard."

— StereoNET United Kingdom

"It remains both a superlative tracker and an enjoyable, if not positively alluring, vinyl companion."

— HiFi News

"the Nagaoka could match or exceed it in areas such as transient attack and bass control."

— HiFi News

Pros

Weighty, tuneful bass combines warmth, timing and strong control.

Exceptionally secure tracking keeps sibilance and mistracking at bay, even on demanding passages.

Clean, open and smooth presentation with immersive, three-dimensional imaging on strong recordings.

Straight-sided body and standard 47kΩ MM compatibility make installation and system matching straightforward.

Cons

Premium pricing makes it a costly moving-magnet option.

Treble can sound slightly forward on certain LPs, and ultimate high-frequency bite is not class-leading.

It is revealing rather than flattering of poor recordings, with soundstage scale varying by recording and system.

SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 94/100

Reviewers find the MP-500 unusually open, clean and musically persuasive, combining a relaxed sweetness with strong rhythmic drive, bass authority and fine detail. Its spatial performance is highly immersive on capable systems, while tracking is repeatedly described as exceptionally secure and composed.

Overall Sound

94/100

HiFi News calls the MP-500 a "proper smoothie," praising its musical ease, rich instrumental textures, lifelike piano and weighty, tuneful bass. StereoNET similarly hears a clean, open, fast and insightful presentation that remains smooth rather than analytical, with delicate, subtly sweet treble. One older HiFi News review notes that some LPs can sound a little high-forward, but this is the only meaningful tonal reservation.

Tracking Retrieval

96/100

The supplied reviews do not identify the stylus profile, so its contribution cannot be assessed directly; listening evidence, however, is exceptionally strong. HiFi News calls the MP-500 a "superlative tracker" with no sibilance or spit, while StereoNET reports no mistracking even on the heavily modulated crescendo in Supertramp's "School." Reviewers also praise its confident handling of detail, transients and complex musical information.

Soundstage Imaging

93/100

StereoNET describes a vast, immersive and notably three-dimensional soundstage, judging its depth perspective superior to both the Grado Prestige Gold and Ortofon 2M Black. HiFi News found performers placed with striking accuracy and convincing individual space, although stage width did not always extend beyond the loudspeakers and the fullest front-to-back openness depended on the partnering system.

FEATURES USABILITY PERFORMANCE 93/100

Tonearm compatibility and system fit are unusually accommodating for a flagship-level cartridge, with straightforward MM-phono-stage operation and forgiving setup.

Tonearm Compatibility

93/100

HiFi News finds setup painless and forgiving, saying the MP-500 suits a standard 47kΩ MM phono input and is not unduly sensitive to small tracking-force changes within its recommended range. Its 7.8g body and straight sides aid mounting and alignment, while StereoNET notes that owners need not replace either an MM phono stage or tonearm to use it. Careful loading may still be worthwhile, as an older review preferred capacitance of 100pF or less for the best treble balance.

Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.

Build Quality

91/100

HiFi News reports a machined aluminium body, a sensible 7.8g mass and straight-sided shaping that makes alignment easier than with more sculpted cartridge bodies. The stylus assembly is securely fastened and replaceable, while the older review highlights robust bolts and practical parallel sides. Reviewers say little about long-term durability, but the reported construction and fitting details are reassuring.

Value for Money

91/100

At around £759-£799 in the more recent reviews, the MP-500 is clearly a premium MM purchase, but StereoNET considers it better value once the avoided cost of an MC-capable phono stage and potentially different tonearm is considered. HiFi News calls its price sane, and the consistently high reported performance supports its competitive standing among upper-tier cartridges.
