ELEVATING VINYL PLAYBACK WITH PRECISION ENGINEERING
Created in collaboration with the revered audio engineer Peter Madnick, renowned for his exceptional contributions to the high-performance audio industry, the all-analog MasterPhono preamplifier is a testament to his expertise. The mission behind the MasterPhono was unequivocal: to replicate the sonic integrity that characterizes the renowned MFSL vinyl reissues.
VERSATILE INPUTS, INFINITE SOUNDSCAPES
One of the most remarkable aspects of the MasterPhono is its versatility. With separate inputs and balanced as well as single-ended outputs, this preamplifier offers a multitude of user-configurable settings, all intuitively accessible via the front panel. The analog meters on the front panel embody the true essence of MasterPhono's analog heritage. Notably, a USB input opens doors to future features and software updates, ensuring a forward-looking experience.
Less coloration. More record.
Current-mode (transimpedance) input stage, a fundamentally different approach to MC phono amplification.
Most phono stages load your cartridge against a fixed resistance. The MasterPhono presents a near-zero impedance input instead, which automatically optimizes cartridge damping, eliminates the guesswork of manual loading, and removes a major source of noise and distortion before it ever enters the signal path.
The result is what a great MC cartridge is actually capable of: tight, defined bass, an open and natural midrange, and transient dynamics that feel immediate and unforced. Less coloration. More record.
What that means in practice:
No manual loading adjustments. The near-short circuit input automatically damps your cartridge correctly — regardless of its internal impedance. Plug in and play.
A BETTER PHONOSTAGE.
Lower noise floor.
Operating at low impedance makes the circuit largely immune to cable capacitance and common RF interference, so what you hear is the signal, not the environment around it.
Higher accuracy.
By avoiding high-voltage gain at the input stage, the MasterPhono introduces less distortion at the point where it matters most — keeping the signal linear from stylus to output.
Optimized for low-output MC.
Current-mode amplification is purpose-built for the low-impedance, low-output moving coil cartridges where the most musical information lives.
PRECISE INPUT FLEXIBILITY
Choose between standard signal input ("Voltage Input") via RCA & XLR or "Current input" tailored for low source-impedance phono cartridges, utilizing "Trans-impedance dynamic loading.
PERFECT LOADING
Find the perfect match for your cartridge with 10 switchable impedance loading adjustments, including a “Custom” via RCA plug on rear panel.
DUAL FUNCTION VU METERS
Dual meters can be used for monitoring or calibration of cartridge azimuth.

MoFi Electronics MasterPhono Phonostage
The MasterPhono stakes its claim as a flagship phono stage by pairing surgical transparency with a musicianly midband: reviewers praised its near-black noise floor and detailed, open presentation. Its dual-chassis design and fully discrete, passive-RIAA topology deliver tight, well-defined bass, nuanced treble and a wide, cohesive soundstage. The unit’s headline feature is the selectable transimpedance (current) or voltage inputs with four gain steps and ten loading positions, making cartridge matching straightforward from the listening chair. Build and usability — remote control, dual VU meters and remembered input presets — drew acclaim from reviewers including HiFi News, Greg Weaver / Positive Feedback and Garrett Hongo / Part Time Audiophile. Ideal for vinyl enthusiasts with mixed MM/MC collections seeking high resolution and flexible cartridge support; the MasterPhono rewards careful setup and auditioning.
Pros
- Exceptionally low noise and black backgrounds that reveal microdetail and breathing room in recordings.
- Flexible input architecture — selectable transimpedance (current) and voltage inputs with four gain steps and ten loading options — for wide cartridge compatibility and precise tuning.
- Natural, slightly warm neutrality with exceptional midband texture, transient clarity and spacious, believable imaging.
- Thoughtful industrial design and feature set — dual-chassis isolation, remote control, VU-meter calibration modes and robust discrete circuitry.

Cons
- The current (transimpedance) input can expose upper-mid/treble stridency with cartridges that aren’t ultra-low impedance, so careful matching is required.
- A few reviewers noted a slight background/structural noise that benefited from additional isolation feet to achieve the optimal black background.
- Documentation and on-unit illustrations were described as thin by some, meaning setup and advanced calibration (azimuth, custom loading) can demand patience.
Transparency
93/100
Multiple reviewers emphasize an extremely quiet background and excellent RIAA accuracy (PF: "near perfectly 'black' background"; TAS/Tracking Angle: measured RIAA +/-0.05dB and published S/N figures), and MoFi's transimpedance/current input is repeatedly credited with reducing noise and RF problems. One review noted a minor background artifact that responded to isolation feet (Future Audiophile), but overall the unit's dual-chassis design, discrete circuitry, and high measured SNRs support a very high Transparency rating.
Sound Quality
91/100
Across reviews the MasterPhono is described as lively, punchy and dynamically responsive (Positive Feedback: 'authoritative weight, impact, and impressive slam'; Future Audiophile: 'lively, engaging, made me tap my toes'; TAS: 'satisfying dynamics'). Its transient resolution and low noise floor enable excellent micro- and macro-dynamics, supporting a high Dynamics score.
Cartridge Compatibility
95/100
The MasterPhono offers both current (transimpedance) and voltage inputs, four gain steps (40/50/60/70dB), ten impedance settings plus custom jacks, balanced/unbalanced I/O and remote-adjustable loading (cited across PF, Part Time Audiophile, HiFi News). Reviewers report strong results with a wide range of MCs (Koetsu, ZYX, Lyra, Ortofon, Miyajima) and note the current input's benefits for very low-impedance MCs, supporting an exceptional compatibility score.
Build Quality
90/100
Build is repeatedly praised: Made in America, dual-compartment/chassis separation with copper conduits for galvanic isolation, quality discrete parts and a substantial remote (Part Time Audiophile, Future Audiophile, HiFi News). Minor quibbles (e.g., preferred better footers) were noted, but overall construction, shielding and thoughtful power/signal separation are excellent.
Value for Money
93/100
Multiple reviewers explicitly call the MasterPhono an outstanding value at its US$5,995 price (Part Time Audiophile: 'can’t think of a better buy'; Tracking Angle/Fremer: 'exceptional value'; Future Audiophile: 'real-world value'). Given the feature set, measured performance and comparison to much pricier units, the consensus is that it justifies its asking price.
