The 99 Classics marries tight, agile bass with a rich, transparent midrange, delivering an inviting, analog-like ease that makes music and films feel vividly alive. Kermit Heartsong also found its spacious imaging, easy drivability and repairable walnut-and-leather construction unusually compelling, creating a stylish closed-back headphone that scales gracefully beyond everyday sources.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Pros
Tight, agile and impactful bass stays controlled across bass-heavy and orchestral material.
Rich, musical, transparent midrange and generous soundstage provide engaging vocals, layering and separation.
Real walnut, leather and metal detailing combine with fully disassemblable construction for strong long-term ownership appeal.
Easy to drive from phones and computers, yet responsive to higher-end portable sources.
&
Cons
Treble extension, ultimate transparency and transient speed do not reach the level of substantially more expensive reference pairings.
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 90/100
The review finds the 99 Classics notably musical, emotionally engaging and unusually transparent for its price context. Its presentation combines strong, agile bass, a rich midrange and a spacious, well-organized image, though ultimate treble extension and transient speed fall short of a far more expensive reference setup.
Bass
92/100
Bass is described as present when the recording calls for it, spanning hip-hop through large-scale classical music without becoming indiscriminate. The reviewer calls it tight, agile, musical and transparent, with at-times startling impact.
Midrange
91/100
The midrange is praised as rich, musical and transparent. This combination is said to make performers and performances especially engaging.
Treble
87/100
The review hears nicely extended highs alongside good texture, timbre and quick transients. However, it also notes that the Meze setup cannot match the extension or lightning-fast transient response of a much costlier EVE and DX220 combination.
Resolution Detail
90/100
Transparency is a recurring strength, described as surprisingly good in the context of a $300 headphone. The reviewer also credits the 99 Classics with insight into both performers and the character of the recorded venue.
Soundstage Imaging
91/100
The soundstage is described as generous in width and height, with good depth as well. Positioning, layering and separation are all considered very good, producing convincing 'you are there' moments.
Dynamics
89/100
The 99 Classics are described as involving enough to prompt foot tapping and head bobbing, suggesting strong rhythmic drive. The reviewer also hears quick transients, although a substantially more expensive comparison system is said to be faster still.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Comfort Fit
85/100
The supplied review does not meaningfully assess clamp force, heat buildup or long-session comfort. At 260 g, the headphone is relatively light on paper, but reviewers say little about how it feels over extended listening.
Build Quality
91/100
The reviewer praises the attention to detail in the real-wood cups, leather and black-and-gold hardware. Crucially, the 99 Classics can be completely disassembled for repair or replacement, an important practical advantage for long-term ownership.
Features Usability
82/100
Its dual 3.5 mm cup connections and 32-ohm specification support straightforward use with phones, computers and portable DACs, while the review says it also scales with more capable equipment. The headset version adds an inline microphone, though the review provides little detail on cable options, controls or day-to-day ergonomics.
Value for Money
85/100
At the stated $388 price, the review does not directly assess the 99 Classics against competing headphones or make a clear value recommendation. It notes that its transparency is surprising in a $300 headphone context, but does not meaningfully compare its asking price with peers.
