McIntosh Labs XR50 Bookshelf Loudspeaker
- Ported 3-Way Bookshelf
- 75 to 300 Watts power rating
XR50 is a cleverly engineered compact bookshelf speaker that produces the rich, full sound one would expect from much larger speakers. Available with a Red Walnut fine gloss wood finish. The magnetically attached grill is acoustically transparent and covered with a neutral black cloth. Unique front panel McIntosh logo may be illuminated when used with McIntosh components.
Our patented Solid Cinch speaker binding posts easily but securely attach the speaker cables to prevent them from coming loose and possibly causing a short; they are gold-plated to prevent corrosion and ensure a quality signal is delivered to the XR50.
Amplifiers from 75 to 300 Watts are appropriate power for XR50. An additional connection passes on Meter Illumination Control for compatible power amplifiers. When connecting the XR50 3-way bookshelf speaker to an amplifier, it is important to use cables of adequate size so that there is no signal loss. This bookshelf speaker can be used in both stereo music and home theater systems. Contact your local dealer to learn more.

The XR50 surprises with deep bass from a compact 6" woofer and a natural midrange that renders vocals lifelike, while a wide soundstage gives recordings room to breathe and precise imaging. Reviewers at Erin's Audio Corner and Audiophilepure note its premium build and dynamics, though its low 81dB sensitivity rewards higher-powered amps.
Pros
- Surprisingly deep, authoritative bass for a compact bookshelf design — delivers more low-end punch than expected.
- Warm, lifelike midrange and strong vocal presence driven by dual 2" inverted-titanium mid drivers.
- High-end build and engineering — cross-braced cabinet, cast driver baskets and handcrafted finish give premium fit and durability.

Cons
- Treble can be bright and sibilant; many listeners need to toe the speakers ~20° off-axis to tame highs, which can reduce imaging focus.
- Low 81dB sensitivity means the XR50 benefits from higher-powered amplifiers to fully realize its dynamics.

Bass
90/100
6" woofer in a ported 3-way; multiple reviewers call the bass 'bigger and deeper' and 'really impressive' — surprisingly deep for its size with furniture‑vibrating presence.
Mid
91/100
Reviewers describe a warm, very natural, and lifelike midrange where 'intake breaths' become musical — strong timbre and vocal presence driven by two 2" inverted titanium mid drivers.
Treble
83/100
Clear and extended titanium dome tweeter but reviewers note a bright/ sibilant presentation that often requires ~20° off‑axis listening to tame.
Soundstage Imaging
86/100
Generally wide and lifelike soundstage with strong imaging detail; however, taming treble sibilance by toeing the speakers off‑axis can reduce image focus via added room reflections.
Dynamics
87/100
Shows strong micro/macro dynamics and punch (reviewers cite 'tremendous presence' and 'furniture‑vibrating' transients) though low 81 dB sensitivity means dynamics benefit from higher power amplifiers.

Build Quality
92/100
High-end construction: cross‑braced cabinet, non‑parallel sides, cast driver baskets, neodymium motors and McIntosh handcrafting — reviewers emphasize premium fit/finish and robust engineering.
Features Connectivity
80/100
Passive baseline applied.
Value for Money
82/100
Strong sound and build for the ~$2,000 per‑speaker / $4,000 pair price cited, but premium cost and required higher‑power amps temper value versus cheaper bookshelf alternatives.
