The MI502 2-Channel Digital Amplifier is a flexible component and welcome addition to a custom installed home audio or home theater system. It delivers world renowned McIntosh sound quality at a rate of 500 Watts into 8 Ohm speakers or 800 Watts into 4 Ohm speakers. It uses highly high-tech closed loop digital switching amplifiers and resilient power supplies that produce performance levels seldom heard in custom install audio.
The applications are nearly limitless for how to use the versatile MI502 in your home entertainment system. It can be used to power the front left and right speakers in a home theater; to drive two in-wall subwoofers; a pair of MI502s could drive the three front channels of your in-home cinema plus one subwoofer; or to power a pair of outdoor speakers for when the party makes it way outside. Additionally, a stack of multiple MI502s could be used to power the distributed audio speakers installed throughout your home.
The MI502 is rack mountable and has a mounting height of 2U making it easy to install in an equipment rack via the included mounting brackets (the mounting brackets are removable for non-rack installations). As a highly efficient Class D amplifier, it does not require noisy cooling fans to maintain nominal operating temperature so the only thing you'll hear coming from it is amazing sounding audio that will impress yourself and your guests.
On the front panel are two blue McIntosh Watt Meters that display the power output of each channel, while multi-color LED indicators display the status of each channel. The back panel includes a pair of balanced and unbalanced inputs to connect the MI502 to your preamplifier. A pair of our standard 5-way speaker binding posts are included to connect your speakers
Other features that come with the MI502 are:
- Power Guard signal overload technology that prevents overdriving the speakers
- Sentry Monitor short-circuit protection circuit that disengages the output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels and then resets automatically when operating conditions return to normal
- Power Control 12 Volt triggering capabilities
- Eco-friendly on/off signal sensing that turns the unit off if no input signal has been detected for a set amount of time or automatically turns the amp on when it senses a signal
The MI502 includes many McIntosh design cues including a black glass front panel, our coveted blue Watt meters, an illuminated McIntosh logo, and a familiar form factor highlighted by silver trim. McIntosh Labs MI502 2-Channel Digital Amplifier
The MI502 marries McIntosh power with install-friendly design: a slim 2U chassis that delivers 500 W per channel via Hypex-based Class D modules, offering high headroom and broad speaker compatibility. Sonically it’s largely neutral and transparent, pairing taut, controlled bass with a natural midrange and energetic treble that keeps fast-tempo music lively. Reviewers highlighted whip‑smart transient response, pronounced dynamic authority and an atmospheric front‑to‑back soundstage. Build quality blends a glass front, blue-lit watt meters and rack‑ready practicality with quiet thermal operation. Ideal for custom install, powering front channels or driving hungry floorstanders, the MI502 is a compact, high‑power option that brings McIntosh character without a bulky footprint — an excellent choice for listeners seeking punchy dynamics and revealing, musical presentation.
Reviews: Mark Craven, Best of High End, Audiophilepure
Pros
- Exceptional transient speed and dynamic authority — performs especially well with uptempo and complex material.
- High continuous power (500 W/8Ω, 800 W/4Ω) and efficient Class D/Hypex design make it capable of driving most loudspeakers and suitable for custom-install and multi-zone use.
- Largely neutral, transparent tonal balance that reveals source detail while retaining musical energy and texture.
&
Cons
- Bass is controlled and musical but doesn’t always produce the largest, deepest bass swells compared with more massive monoblock designs.
- Relatively deep chassis and meter illumination behavior can complicate discreet rack placement (noted depth ~533mm; meters require a McIntosh preamp to dim).

Dynamics
91/100
Reviewers repeatedly praised the MI502's transient speed, headroom and authority: HiFi News called out 'lightning reflexes' and 'whip-smart responses' and noted it 'meets dynamic bursts head on.' The amp's 500W/8ohm (800W/4ohm) Class‑D topology (Hypex-based design referenced by HiFi News) and specified dynamic headroom support the sense of effortless power and control, so the score reflects excellent dynamics for a high‑power Class D stereo amp.
Soundstage Imaging
89/100
HiFi News highlighted an atmospheric presentation with front‑to‑back scale and well‑placed musicians, and Audiophilepure noted transparency that revealed source detail — both indicating strong imaging and soundstage solidity. The MI502 maintains spatial cues even while delivering punchy dynamics, so imaging and stage depth are rated very highly.

Build Quality
88/100
The MI502's Class D efficiency reduces the need for noisy cooling fans and the unit is rack‑mountable (2U) with McIntosh's glass front and signature meters, noted by Best of High End; construction and thermal approach are described as appropriate for install/custom use. Stereo design (not monoblocks) and direct‑coupled outputs indicate solid practical engineering and finish consistent with McIntosh's premium build standards.
Value for Money
86/100
At the stated price (~$5,000) and with 500W/8ohm (800W/4ohm) output, reviewers emphasized performance and install‑friendliness rather than explicit price comparisons to competitors. None of the provided reviews directly compared the MI502 to peer products (e.g., similarly powered Class D units from Crown, NAD/CI, Bryston or other Hypex‑based designs), so per scoring rules the assessment uses the neutral baseline: the amp offers strong performance for its class and price, but the reviews do not provide direct peer-context to justify a higher value rating.
