The MC830 is a 1-Channel Solid State Amplifier that features an open chassis industrial design similar to our popular MC275 Vacuum Tube Amplifier, and MA252 and MA352 Integrated Amplifiers. A pair of MC830s, when combined with a preamplifier (such as the matching C8 Vacuum Tube Preamplifier), source components like a turntableCD player (see the matching MCD85 SACD/CD Player) or streaming music player, and a pair of speakers, can deliver a true-to-life home audio experience.

With a similar footprint to our MA252 Integrated Amplifier, the MC830 is a direct coupled output design that is rated at 300 Watts at 8 Ohms or 480 Watts at 4 Ohms. A fast-responding Dual Scale Watt meter gives an accurate readout of power output for both speaker impedances.

Our Monogrammed Heatsinks add visual appeal and will keep the MC830 running cool for optimum performance. Both a balanced and unbalanced input are included for connecting it to the rest of your home music system.

To protect your speakers and overall system, the MC830 includes two of our cornerstone home audio technologies. Our patented Power Guard technology monitors the amplifier's output signal to protect your speakers against being over driven; if necessary, it makes real time micro adjustments to the input signal to prevent clipping that could damage your speakers. Another level of protection is Sentry Monitor, our fuse-less short-circuit protection circuit that will disengage the MC830's output stage before current exceeds safe operating levels, and then will reset automatically when operating conditions return to normal.

Our patented Solid Cinch speaker binding posts easily secure your speaker cables to prevent them from coming loose and possibly causing a short. The binding posts are gold-plated to prevent corrosion and ensure a quality audio signal is sent to your speakers. Power Control ports allow for easy system power up and shutdown by sending power on/off signals to other connected McIntosh components. The user selectable Auto Off feature will turn off the MC830 after 30 minutes if no audio signal is received.

A die cast aluminum name badge is affixed to each side of the chassis, and the front, top and rear of the chassis is polished to a mirror finish. The MC830 features a black glass front panel with silver trim, a blue Watt meter, an illuminated logo, and control knobs. Contact your local dealer to learn more.

McIntosh MC830 1-Channel Solid State Amplifier

The MC830 monoblock distills McIntosh's signature mix of power and musicality into a single-channel amplifier delivering 300 W into 8Ω (480 W into 4Ω). It serves taut, controlled bass, a textured midrange with palpable presence, and focused imaging that layers instruments across a wide, stable soundstage. Reviewers such as Douglas Seth Brown and Audiophilepure flagged the amp's low noise floor, unflappable dynamics and ability to drive demanding speakers without congestion. The polished stainless-steel chassis, glass front and illuminated meters underline its premium build and showroom presence. Best suited to listeners who prioritize slam, clarity and imaging in larger systems, the MC830 delivers a compelling balance of performance and McIntosh character that’s worth auditioning.

Audiophilepure

"Feed these amps power through decent A/C cords, attach good speaker cables, turn them on, and—voila—you’ll hear soul moving sound!"

Pros

  • Exceptional clean power and headroom—300 W/8Ω (480 W/4Ω) gives authoritative dynamics and control with demanding speakers.
  • Excellent imaging and soundstage layering—separates instruments with precision and stable image placement even in dense passages.
  • Very low noise floor and reliable performance—quiet operation that reveals detail without congestion.
  • Robust, iconic McIntosh build and styling—polished stainless-steel chassis, glass front and illuminated meters make it a premium, durable component.

Cons

  • Can be slightly harsh in the highest frequencies compared with warmer tube references.
  • Does not reach the ultimate micro-detail or refinement of $20K-class reference solid-state amplifiers.
  • Requires a warm-up/run-in period (about 30 minutes of signal) before reaching peak openness and dynamics.

Dynamics

92/100

Monoblock solid-state design delivering 300 W into 8 ohms (480 W into 4 ohms) gives abundant headroom and current delivery; reviewers repeatedly praised the amp's authority — 'sheer power' and 'never sounded stressed' — and its ability to drive the Sonetto 8s to live-concert levels. The MC830 produced faster transients, strong instrument separation, and unflappable control even in dense passages, consistent with high-power Class A/B expectations; monoblock topology adds an extra measure of control.

Soundstage Imaging

90/100

Multiple reports of improved instrument separation, precise image chiseling, and stable positioning — 'layered individual instruments within a 3-dimensional soundstage' and noticeably better separation and transient speed. While not at the extreme 3-D micro-detail of top-tier $20K designs, the MC830 reliably produces large, well-defined soundstages with accurate image placement.

Build Quality

91/100

Solid, heavy monoblock construction (48 lbs) with polished stainless steel chassis, glass front and illuminated meters; direct-coupled push-pull solid-state circuit suggests robust power supply and thermal design. Reviewers noted the amps are whisper-quiet and stable; monoblock architecture confers obvious advantages in channel separation and power-supply heft.

Value for Money

90/100

Reviewers positively framed value for the intended market: Audiophilepure 'strongly recommend auditioning' the pair 'beneath the $10K retail mark' and Positive Feedback said the MC830s at the reviewed pricing give listeners a real taste of $20K-class sound. Given the published per-channel power (300 W/8Ω, 480 W/4Ω), build quality, and reviewer sentiment that they approach much more expensive rivals, the MC830s justify a premium in their segment.
