The MC1502 Vacuum Tube Amplifier is a stereo amplifier designed for home audio and home music systems that produces 150 Watts per channel. It is the direct replacement to our award winning MC2152 Limited Edition 70th Anniversary Vacuum Tube Amplifier, which was released in celebration of our 70th Anniversary that occurred in 2019. The new MC1502 has identical audio specifications and sound reproduction performance of the heralded MC2152 but in a more customary McIntosh design.

The MC1502 shares the timeless styling of our classic MC275 Vacuum Tube Amplifier. As the MC1502 has twice the stereo power rating of the MC275 (150 Watts vs. 75 Watts) and is physically larger, in many ways it can be considered the MC275's big brother. And while a pair of MC275s can be run in mono to achieve the 150 Watts per channel output of the MC1502, the MC1502 boasts a better signal-to-noise ratio of 112dB vs. 105dB for the MC275 pairing – producing an even quieter performance than the already quiet MC275.

The MC1502 is powered by eight KT88 output vacuum tubes, with four assigned to each stereo channel. It also has eight small signal tubes, consisting of four 12AX7A and four 12AT7 vacuum tubes; two of each of these vacuum tubes are dedicated to each audio channel. The 12AX7A vacuum tubes are for the Balanced and Input amps, while the 12AT7 tubes are for the Voltage and Driver amps. All the vacuum tubes are covered by a 12-gauge stainless steel wire cage with a black powder coated finish.

The KT88 vacuum tube sockets include Air-Pipe cooling at their bases to help facilitate long service life. The eight signal tube sockets have ceramic base construction with gold plated contacts, providing protection from atmospheric contamination. All the vacuum tubes sit atop the precision formed stainless steel chassis polished to a mirror finish. Our Sentry Monitor technology monitors the output current and shuts the amplifier off if it ever exceeds safe limits; the signal tubes will flash red if Sentry Monitor is ever activated.

Unlike many other amplifiers, the MC1502's full 150 Watts can be delivered to almost any pair of speakers regardless if they have 2, 4 or 8 Ohm impedance. This is thanks to our patented Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer technology – the same technology McIntosh was founded on in 1949. Two Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers flank the power transformer which is positioned between them. Each transformer is housed in a glass topped extruded enclosure that displays the wiring diagram for each transformer. Two fully spelled out vintage die cast aluminum name badges adorn two sides of the MC1502, while an abbreviated badge is centered between the Tube Lights and Power knobs.

Both balanced and unbalanced inputs are included to connect the MC1502 to your preamplifier and the rest of your home audio system. Our patented Solid Cinch speaker binding posts will securely connect your speaker cables to your speakers

An input and output for our Power Control technology allows other connected McIntosh components, such as preamplifiersCD playersturntables, or media steamers, to automatically turn on and off. Contact your local dealer to learn more.

McIntosh Labs MC1502 2-Channel Vacuum Tube Amplifier

The MC1502 is a 150-watt-per-channel tube powerhouse that blends classic thermionic color with modern control. Reviewers such as Dave McNair, TONEAudio and Audiophilepure praised its headroom and composure. Sonically it offers a slightly warm, fleshed-out midrange, authoritative, well-controlled bass and extended highs that avoid glare—delivering a spacious, layered soundstage with precise imaging. Highlights include exceptional dynamic range, unity-coupled output transformers, auto-biasing and Sentry Monitor protection, all housed in a polished stainless chassis with McIntosh’s patented Solid Cinch binding posts. Ideal for vinyl lovers and listeners who need big-room dynamics without sacrificing tube character. Given its combination of power, refinement and American build, reviewers judge the MC1502 as a compelling value proposition for serious systems.

Part Time Audiophile

"Like a warm hug from your Dad at Christmas time, but he’s wearing a freshly pressed white dress shirt instead of a worn-out old cardigan. That’s what the McIntosh Labs MC1502 sounded like in my system."

Pros

  • Exceptional headroom and slam from 150 Wpc—delivers wide dynamic range and composure at both low and high listening levels.
  • Powerful, controlled low end with remarkable bass impact and authority without losing control or bloom.
  • Musical, resolving midrange and wide, well-layered imaging that combine tube warmth with high resolution.

&

Cons

  • Very large and heavy (118 lb chassis, 135 lb packed); requires help to move and ample shelf clearance for heat.
  • May not be the ideal tonal match for every loudspeaker—some speakers sounded less comfortable compared with other amps in certain pairings.

Dynamics

92/100

Reviewers repeatedly praised the MC1502's headroom and slam: ToneAudio called it 'incredible dynamic range' with 112 dB peaks, Audiophilepure noted that the 150 Wpc rating 'comes in handy' even at modest levels, and Part Time Audiophile described the amp as a 'lion tamer' that springs into action with effortless control. Despite a low published damping factor (>18) inherent to tube topology, listeners report authoritative bass, fast transient slam and composure at high levels, so dynamics are excellent for a high-power tube design.

Soundstage Imaging

91/100

Multiple reviewers report an expansive, stable soundstage and precise imaging: Part Time Audiophile highlighted depth, width and layering and mentioned a vocal image 'floating in the space between the speakers,' while ToneAudio noted the soundstage remained intact even when pushed hard. The MC1502 retains channel separation and spatial cues even on dense mixes.

Build Quality

92/100

The MC1502 is a substantial, well-built unit: reviewers note 118 lb chassis (135 lb packed), polished stainless-steel styling, large output transformers and tubes prominently displayed. McIntosh's practical engineering features (auto-biasing, Sentry Monitor protection) and solid mechanical execution were complimented; this is a stereo tube amp (not monoblock) with robust thermal and power-supply components.

Value for Money

98/100

Multiple reviewers used very strong value language: ToneAudio called the (review-stated) $11,000 MC1502 a 'stone cold bargain' and Part Time Audiophile called it 'practically a steal,' citing 150 Wpc of tube power and American build. (Note: product data lists a price range of $14,000; reviewers referenced an $11,000 MSRP—pricing may vary by market or time.) Compared with other high-power tube amps and competing solid-state designs mentioned in the reviews (e.g., Pass, Qualiton), reviewers judged the MC1502 to offer exceptional performance for the money, justifying a superlative value score.
