Originally designed as a monitor for a top recording studio, the Legacy Studio HD offers unmatched clarity and dynamics in a compact enclosure. Don’t let its size fool you. The Studio HD is a robust compact monitor featuring an 8” Silver/Graphite bass/midrange driver and a 1” dual pole AMT folded ribbon for a perfect balance of power and articulation.

The Legacy Studio HD: Professional Reference Monitors for Discerning Ears

Designed initially for a top recording studio, the Legacy Studio HD is a high-performance monitor that delivers an open, dynamic, and accurate sound. The sound is open and airy, yet a kick drum “feels” like a kick drum. Vocals are robust and effortless. You can hear lungs fill with air before the first note is sung.

Its compact design belies its robust build and powerful performance. These professional reference monitors feature an 8-inch Silver/Graphite woven diaphragm woofer and a 1-inch dual pole AMT folded ribbon tweeter, the same tweeter found in Legacy Audio’s flagship models.

The Studio HD’s meticulous engineering provides a flat frequency response from 41 Hz to 30 kHz, ensuring critical accuracy for mixing and mastering. The rear-ported cabinet, constructed from dense 1.125″ MDF, and independent high- and low-frequency contour switches allow for precise room adjustments, making them a versatile tool for any studio or home environment.

Studio HD excels as both a left and right main speaker, as well as a surround speaker for Atmos® systems. Coupled with the Metro XD subwoofer, Studio HD offers a building block approach to true high-end audio.

The Legacy 1” dual pole AMT folded ribbon delivers airy and clear highs up to 30 kHz and is the same award-winning Legacy AMT found in the larger Focus SE & Aeris floor-standing speakers.

Studio HD features a proprietary 8” woven Silver/Graphite bass/midrange driver with a cast basket. The woofer is designed to prevent acoustic interference across the larger surface area of the driver. Thanks to the deep tuning of this ultra-efficient driver, the range of the Studio HD is impressively large.

Deliciously Crispy

The Studio HD delivers an exceptionally clean midrange and refined ribbon treble, pairing tight, controlled bass with a wide, deep soundstage that belies its modest size. Reviewers like Jim Milton praised its imaging and inert hardwood cabinet, while Audiophilepure highlighted its spirited timing and rhythmic drive. Its build and dynamics make it a compelling studio-grade monitor.

HomeTheaterHifi

"If you are looking for big, detailed sound in a small and beautiful package, the Studio HDs may be just what the doctor ordered."

Pros

  • Exceptionally clean, uncolored midrange that preserves vocal detail and natural timbre.
  • Refined folded-ribbon treble with wide dispersion and low sibilance, delivering smooth high-frequency detail.
  • Broad, deep, three-dimensional soundstage and stable imaging that outperform typical monitors of similar size.
  • Robust build quality — inert hardwood cabinet, solid internal bracing and high-quality binding posts.

&

Cons

  • Sub-bass extension is limited for floor‑standing expectations; a subwoofer is recommended to restore the lowest octaves.
  • Slight emphasis in the presence region with a modest reduction of lower-mid 'meat' noted by one reviewer, which may affect tonal balance for some tastes.

Sound Quality

92/100

Weighted average of sub-criteria below.

Bass

92/100

Ported 8" woofer and rear reflex alignment deliver surprisingly deep, controlled bass for its size (claimed down to ~41–42 Hz). Reviewers noted "deep drums had impact and definition" and that the cabinets "provide bass augmentation," while also saying a sub will round out the very lowest octaves—consistent with a large/ported bookshelf that performs well but is not a floorstander.

Mid

90/100

Very clean, uncolored midrange due to heavy bracing and inert hardwood cabinet: "no audible midrange ... coloration" and vocals retain power and beauty. One reviewer noted a slight emphasis in the presence region with a modest reduction of lower-mid meat, but overall timbre and clarity are strong.

Treble

92/100

1" folded-ribbon AMT delivers extended, refined treble with wide dispersion and low sibilance: reviewers observed a good response "without the extra boost in sibilance" and that the tweeter "did not call undue attention to itself," supporting excellent extension and smoothness.

Soundstage Imaging

92/100

Consistently praised for a broad, deep, and three-dimensional soundstage: reviewers reported excellent depth and stable, easily discernible instrument placement, with staging only just shy of the reviewer's definitive monitors.

Dynamics

92/100

Punchy micro- and macro-dynamics for the form factor; reviewers noted impactful drums and that the speakers "can be played loudly" without stress and even "open up" at higher levels. The emphasis on pace, timing and rhythmic drive also supports a lively dynamic presentation.

Build Quality

93/100

Exceptional cabinetry and parts for the category: thick hardwood, substantial internal bracing, cast-basket 8" driver with phase plug, and high-quality all-metal binding posts. Reviewers described the cabinets as "extremely inert" and "deceptively heavy," and praised packaging and finish—evidence of high craftsmanship.

Features Connectivity

83/100

Passive bookshelf baseline applied (single passive design) plus bi-wire/bi-amp-capable dual binding-posts (+2) and onboard +/-2 dB treble and mid-bass adjustment toggles (+1). Score remains within passive bookshelf bounds (80–85).

Value for Money

89/100

Strong performance-to-price if using the reviewers' indicated MSRPs (~$1,450–$1,795): reviewers imply very competitive value given the monitor-grade sound, build quality, and lively presentation, though they do not use superlative bargain language. If priced at the higher product-data range (~$3.5–4.5k) value would be weaker; reviews support the lower MSRP figures.
