Grimm Audio MU1
The MU1 is the ultimate digital music source. Combined with the LS1, it forms a peerlessly elegant High-End audio system.
We wanted to develop the most accurate audio source we could imagine. In our experience, the human hearing system shows an incredible sensitivity to anomalies. Even unimaginably small aberrations appear to be audible. In principle, digital audio does offer perfect reproduction. Its sonic quality, however, is limited by the implementation accuracy of the physical and mathematical laws that affect the conversion from one format to another. Grimm Audio strives to bring you confidence that all technical details are taken care of to the greatest extent so that the reproduction system steps out of the way of the music.
With the MU1, our goal was to set a new benchmark in music player design. The Linux-based computer system brings solid data integrity. Our in-house-designed FPGA interface board, which forms the heart of the MU1, offers breakthrough performance levels in format conversion and receives automatic updates whenever we have pushed the boundaries again. Needless to say, the MU1 features our trademark ultra-low jitter clock. This is a music player worthy of the name Grimm Audio.
Once excellent sound quality is ensured, the quality of a music player is then defined by the user experience. For this, we partnered with Roon Labs, who in our opinion are in the lead when it comes to a rich and engaging music experience that appeals to your whole family. The MU1 runs the Roon Server, so no extra installs are necessary. Just pick up your tablet and experience the music. For customers who prefer to only run a simple playback system without Roon’s extras, we offer a UPnP renderer function and Tidal Connect.
The MU1 combines seamlessly with the LS1 playback system. Of course, the virtues of the MU1 can also be realized with DACs from other manufacturers. Because we love to create a stunning look for our equipment, the boundlessly versatile system is housed in a cabinet of minimalistic elegance, so the MU1 will easily become the gem of your living room.

Grimm Audio MU1 — precision digital front end
The MU1 is a purpose-built Roon Core and digital hub that uses a custom Pure Nyquist FPGA and an ultra‑low‑jitter master clock to up/downsample and reclock digital sources, delivering remarkably analogue‑like liquidity, deep controlled bass and expansive staging. Reviewers such as K. E. Heartsong, HiFi News and Tom Waters all credit the MU1's FPGA + clock combination for a step change in resolution and imaging, especially when used via AES/EBU (4x) outputs. The chassis is elegant and minimal — the distinctive gold control wheel and web control make setup and operation possible for serious systems. Ideal for listeners who want to offload oversampling from their DAC and extract extra musical insight from existing libraries. High‑end price, but many reviewers find the sonic gains justify the cost.
Pros
- Custom FPGA with Pure Nyquist filters and ultra‑low‑jitter clock that noticeably improves resolution, timing and musicality when feeding an external DAC.
- AES/EBU (and later S/PDIF) output path yields deeper bass, blacker backgrounds and wider, more palpable soundstaging versus USB/ethernet.
- Integrated Roon Core plus flexible storage (internal SSD, USB, NAS) and multi‑input hub functionality make the MU1 a practical central source for high‑end systems.
&
Cons
- To access its full sonic benefits you must use AES/EBU or S/PDIF into a compatible DAC; USB/ethernet bypasses the FPGA processing.
- Premium price and aimed at summit‑fi buyers — not a value play for budget systems.
- Initial setup and controls can be fiddly (gold wheel, small power switch), large NAS libraries may stress the onboard i3/Roon setup — read the manual and consider internal SSD for best stability.
Digital Performance
95/100
All reviews highlight Grimm's custom FPGA oversampler and ultra-low-jitter clock as the MU1's core strengths (SoundStage, HiFi Advice, 6Moons). AES/EBU output and the Pure Nyquist processing were repeatedly credited with superior reclocking, reduced jitter and audible gains versus USB/Roon upsampling, delivering very high integrity digital output to downstream DACs.
Sound Quality
94/100
Multiple reviewers report expansive, three-dimensional staging: HiFi News called the focus, space and three-dimensional soundstaging 'breathtaking', Audiokey and The Ear described cavernous, deep staging and improved separation, and several listeners noted greater image palpability and instrument layering when using the AES outputs.
Build Quality
90/100
Build is described as elegant and well executed: reviewers note a high-quality in-house SMPS, shielded clock enclosure and refined chassis design (SoundStage, HiFi Advice, The Ear). The MU1 is relatively light (no heavy transformers) but its internal power and clock engineering were praised as premium and carefully implemented.
Features Connectivity
82/100
As a digital hub/transport/music server the MU1 offers Roon Core/Roon Ready, UPnP, Tidal/Qobuz, AES/EBU, S/PDIF, optical, LS1 link and optional internal SSD; reviewers emphasise AES as the path to its best sound. Applied as a transport/server (digital-only outputs), the feature set is excellent for its class (Roon Ready + internal storage + multiple digital outputs + web control), but being digital-output-only limits its connectivity score under the transport baseline.
Value for Money
89/100
Value sentiment is mixed but leans positive for buyers in this high-end segment: several reviews (SoundStage, The Ear, Audiokey) say the price is high but justified by the sound, while others (Part Time Audiophile) warn it won't suit 'value' shoppers. Reviewers commonly conclude the MU1 is a premium, performance-justified purchase rather than an affordable bargain.
