Elipson’s CHROMA 400 makes vinyl feel fluid, rhythmically agile and generously scaled, pairing its carbon-fibre arm with a forgiving Ortofon OM10 cartridge. HiFi News found its presentation engaging and spacious, with convincing ambience and stable tracking. This distinctive belt-drive deck prioritises musical ease and immersive soundstage over forensic analysis.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Pros
Rhythmically coherent, agile sound gives bass and percussion an inviting sense of flow.
Generous scale and convincing acoustic ambience create an immersive, well-organised soundstage.
Forgiving OM10 cartridge handles hot pressings calmly, while the arm/cartridge tracked every record tested faithfully.
&
Cons
Bass extension lacks the deepest impact and physical heft.
Some low-level detail and upper-register presence can be subdued by the supplied OM10 cartridge.
Undamped cueing lift demands care when lowering the stylus.
SOUND QUALITY PERFORMANCE 86/100
The Chroma 400 is praised for an easy, rhythmically coherent and involving presentation, with impressive scale and ambience for an affordable deck. Its forgiving OM10 balance makes challenging pressings listenable, although the cartridge leaves some fine detail behind and there is little direct comment on mechanical quietness or measured speed precision.
Overall Sound
91/100
Hi-Fi News found the deck effortless and rhythmically inviting, with notably agile bass and percussion. It conveyed convincing venue ambience, performer separation and large-scale sound without becoming diffuse; the main reservation is that the OM10 can omit some fine recorded detail.
Speed Stability
85/100
The review repeatedly praises the Chroma 400's rhythmic flow and coherence, including on demanding and fast-moving music. It does not provide direct observations on pitch accuracy, speed drift, wow or flutter.
Tonearm Performance
85/100
The unusual Orbital Torsion Tonearm has useful refinements and, paired with the supplied OM10, tracked every record tested faithfully. Its undamped cueing lift requires care when lowering the cartridge, particularly at the recommended low tracking force.
Noise Isolation
80/100
The review identifies the Chroma 400 as an unsuspended belt-drive design but offers no direct findings on motor noise, rumble, acoustic feedback or footfall resistance. Its listening comments do not point to audible noise intruding on music.
Assessments of Build Quality, Usability, and Overall Propositions.
Build Quality
84/100
Hi-Fi News considers the Chroma 400 reasonably well made. The plinth combines a plastic lower body with an upper MDF section, so it is a sensible rather than lavishly engineered construction at this level.
Features Usability
81/100
A carbon arm and pre-fitted Ortofon OM10 make this a relatively approachable package for new vinyl listeners. The arm's undamped lift is a meaningful operational drawback, as careful cueing is needed to avoid dropping the stylus too abruptly.
Value for Money
88/100
At roughly $430–$500, the Chroma 400 is described as affordable and as a deck with virtues likely to appeal to vinyl starters. The review stops short of calling it a market disruptor, but finds its musical strengths persuasive for the price.
