Fremer found the Khumar free from obvious coloration or congestion, with attractively engaged midrange reproduction, nimble extended bass and appropriate warmth. He also heard a mild upper-mid/lower-treble lift that could make higher volume levels less comfortable, while some large-scale dynamic variation seemed somewhat suppressed.

At 2g, the cartridge cleanly negotiated the 60µm Ortofon test band, showed only a slight buzz at 70µm, and failed at 80µm, described as typical moving-coil behavior. Its Shibata stylus substantially reduced noise in previously troublesome passages and did an impressive job decoding background details.

The Khumar keeps instruments recognisable and well separated, even when recordings contain considerable background activity. Its stage was wide and reasonably deep, but the review found that it did not reproduce the recording's full depth or fully reveal hall reverberation behind the orchestra.

The Khumar's moderate compliance and conventional body weight should suit a broad selection of medium-mass tonearms, and the recommended 2g tracking force is practical to set. As a low-output MC with 0.3mV output and a recommended load of at least 20 ohms, it needs thoughtful phono-stage gain and loading rather than simple plug-and-play MM compatibility.

The handcrafted ebony body, boron cantilever, Shibata III stylus and low-impedance generator make for a notably ambitious construction at this price. Fremer directly characterises it as a very well-constructed cartridge, while noting the strong output for a 2-ohm low-output MC design.

At roughly $2,382 in the reviewed configuration, Fremer calls the Khumar one of today's best moving-coil values and says it is well worth considering. The strong construction, low noise, effective detail retrieval and broadly satisfying musical performance support that enthusiastic assessment, despite its tonal and spatial caveats.
