Copland CSA100
The CSA100 integrated amplifier is a part of the latest work by Copland, aiming to combine the advantages of tubes and transistor amplification using the synectic design concept that previously has made Copland hybrid amplifiers widely acclaimed.
The CSA100 provides four digital inputs, five analogue inputs and a 100 Watt per channel power amplifier
One tube is responsible for the CSA100 line amplification and the efficiency of this single tube layout is astonishing. The double triode tube runs at high voltage in a setup for maximum linearity, taking care of the voltage amplification only.
A MOS-FET circuitry delivers the brute force driving the line stage output and feedback circuitry, thus securing a firm handshake between the world of electronic tubes governed by voltage and the current controlled transistor technology.
If you prefer the warm and nice colored charm of some older tube designs look elsewhere, the CSA100 tube line stage is made for monitoring. In this application the tube provides life, headroom and dynamics hard to find in amplifiers relying on solid stage technology only.
A single chassis made of aluminium alloy to avoid magnetic interference. For the vinyl enthusiast the CSA100 has RIAA input for moving magnet or high output moving coil cartridges.
The amplifier also employs an excellent D/A converter with multiple S/PDIF inputs, PCM, and DSD capabilities using the ES9018 Reference 32-bit DAC in quad-mono configuration, 8 mono to 2 stereo configuration.
The CSA100 USB input implementation is featuring USB 2.0 PCM 24/32 bit data transfer to 384 kHz, including native DSD64 and high resolution DSD128.
The asynchronous USB-B port connects to your computer’s USB-A port. Once connected, the computer recognizes the CSA100 and routes the digital audio data to it, bypassing the source device’s internal audio circuitry.

Copland CSA100 — hybrid integrated with serious polish
The Copland CSA100 is a compact, feature-rich integrated that pairs a single triode preamp tube with a MOSFET power stage to yield a balanced, dynamic sound. Reviewers from hi‑fi+, What Hi‑Fi? and HiFi News highlighted its neutral, detailed presentation, wide three‑dimensional imaging and extended, controlled bass. The onboard ESS Sabre ES9018 DAC, MM phono stage, USB/coax/optical inputs and pre‑out make it an all‑in‑one hub, while 2×100W (8Ω) / 2×180W (4Ω) delivers confident headroom. Build is solid with tactile controls and a refined finish. Ideal for listeners who want a versatile, musical centerpiece for small–medium rooms, the CSA100 marries high‑end features with a supple, non‑fatiguing sound that reviewers called highly compelling.
Pros
- Neutral, finely detailed presentation with a wide, three‑dimensional soundstage that reveals low‑level detail without fatigue.
- Strong, controlled dynamics and headroom (2×100W/8Ω, 2×180W/4Ω) that drive demanding speaker loads while keeping bass tight.
- Comprehensive, high‑quality connectivity: ESS Sabre DAC (quad‑mono), USB/coax/optical, MM phono, pre‑out and optional aptX HD Bluetooth — a true all‑in‑one hub.
- Robust build and refined ergonomics — solid chassis, tactile controls and an attractive finish that match its premium feature set.
&
Cons
- Headphone output has a relatively high 40 Ω output impedance, so some low‑impedance headphones may require careful matching.
- No front‑panel display to indicate incoming digital resolution, only LEDs — less convenient for source diagnostics.
- Phono section supports MM only (no dedicated MC stage), which may prompt buyers with low‑output cartridges to consider an external phono preamp.

Dynamics
89/100
The hybrid MOSFET output (100W/8Ω, 180W/4Ω) and large toroidal transformer give the CSA100 strong headroom and the ability to drive difficult loads — reviewers repeatedly note tight, controlled kick drums and confident bass delivery (SoundStage Solo, Hi‑Fi+). It isn’t the most hyper‑ballistic amp in this price bracket (rivals like Rega/Naim can sound more muscular), but it offers expressive, controlled dynamics without sounding strained.
Soundstage Imaging
92/100
Multiple reviewers highlight an impressive, three‑dimensional, holographic soundstage with good width and depth (HiFi Choice, Hi‑Fi+, What Hi‑Fi?, The Ear). Imaging is reported as stable and well focused, giving convincing placement of vocals and instruments.

Build Quality
91/100
Build and finish receive consistent praise: attractive matt finishes, solid chassis, precise tactile controls and visible large toroidal transformer indicate quality engineering (SoundStage Solo, HiFi Choice, HiFi News). Reviewers call the construction ‘superb’ and ‘beautifully finished’, with an intuitive setup and robust connections.
Features Connectivity
95/100
Feature set is comprehensive: ESS Sabre ES9018 reference DAC (quad‑mono implementation), USB‑B, coaxial and two optical inputs, balanced XLR input, MM phono stage, headphone output, pre‑out/variable output and tape loop; aptX HD Bluetooth is available as an option (SoundStage Solo, HiFi Choice, The Ear, HiFi News). The implementation quality of the DAC and phono stage is repeatedly praised; the unit lacks an MC phono option and a detailed incoming‑signal display, but overall connectivity and functionality are class‑leading.
Value for Money
90/100
Reviewers consistently describe the CSA100 as a well‑equipped, class‑leading product for its segment and praise its combination of sound, features and build (What Hi‑Fi?, HiFi News, The Ear). Price points cited in reviews (e.g. ~£3,498 / AU$6,600 in some markets) are met with comments that the unit represents a strong, justifiable purchase for buyers seeking a high‑quality hybrid integrated amp.
