The ET7-S2 enhance triode line-stage preamplifier has been designed to incorporate the advances made with the Series 2 upgrade to our flagship GAT into a more affordable model.

The circuitry of the ET7-S2 follows closely that of the GAT Series 2. The audio circuit is elegant in its simplicity. An audio amplifier stage consisting of a single-ended triode amplifier provides the voltage gain. This amplifier stage is connected to the preamplifier outputs through a high-current MOSFET buffer, which achieves a very low output impedance, making the ET7-S2 extremely flexible in the choice of interconnect cables and amplifiers. DC voltage is supplied to the circuit by the revised discrete voltage regulator developed for the GAT Series 2. It isolates the audio circuit from the power line by maintaining negligible impedance across the audio frequency band. Infra-sonic noise is minimized by operating the tube filaments (heaters) on a dc voltage supplied by a separate regulated power supply.

The ET7-S2 also boasts the GAT’s convenience and ease of use. The unit features input selection and level adjustment by microprocessor-controlled relays, with controls available both at the front panel and via a full-function remote. All control functions of the ET7-S2 operate through microprocessor-controlled relays. For the level control, the relays select combinations from a network of precision, low-noise metal foil resistors to effect loudness and balance changes in 100 steps of approximately .7dB per step. All switching and adjustment can be controlled by the unit’s remote control. A Theater Mode, which passes the input signal through at unity gain, makes it simple to incorporate the ET7-S2 into a high quality home theater system without compromising its two-channel performance.

Like its bigger brother, the GAT Series 2, the ET7-S2 is constructed from the highest quality, carefully selected parts for unrivaled sonic performance and reliability. Tubes have been selected for minimum noise and microphonics. CJD Teflon capacitors are used in the ET7-S2 for output coupling and post-regulator power supply storage. In the power supplies, all capacitors are of polypropylene or Teflon—there are no electrolytic capacitors anywhere in the audio circuits or their DC power supplies. The resistors in these circuits (including the two dozen level control resistors) are special low inductance, high-precision laser-trimmed metal foil resistors. Switches are sealed relays with gold-plated silver contacts. Input and output connectors are machined from oxygen-free copper, and are gold plated.

For four decades, the conrad-johnson design team has been dedicated to creating audio components that do credit to music performances. Through meticulous engineering, careful specification of only the finest available component parts, and a painstaking attention to construction, we have created what we feel is a line-stage without rival in its class. We invite you to arrange an audition of the ET7-S2 with your conrad-johnson dealer to experience the extraordinary musical performance of this remarkable preamplifier.

Conrad-Johnson ET7-S2 — warm, detailed, and musically engaging

The Conrad Johnson ET7-S2 marries classic tube warmth with modern control, delivering a rich, immersive linestage performance. As reviewed by TONEAudio MAGAZINE, the ET7-S2’s organic, warm yet controlled sound renders natural bass weight, graceful treble detail, and a forward but spacious midrange. Its imaging projects instruments around and beyond the speakers with convincing front-to-back layering, while C-J’s refined parts yield strong dynamics and a low noise floor. Built with a hefty, rack-friendly chassis and a matched anodized remote, the ET7-S2 prioritizes musicality over feature overload—offering five RCA inputs and two main outs rather than balanced I/O. Ideal for listeners who want to dissolve into the music rather than scrutinize every transient, the ET7-S2 represents flagship-inspired performance and, per reviewers, exceptional value in its class.

Tone Audio

"The resulting sonic signature is akin to taking a seat in the tenth row of a concert hall rather than the first."

Pros

  • Organic, warm yet detailed sonic character that smooths harsh recordings while revealing fine detail.
  • Impressive soundstaging and imaging with clear front-to-back placement and wide three-dimensionality.
  • Strong dynamics and low noise floor delivered by modern CJD components (improved bass extension and dynamic range).
  • High perceived value — flagship-derived technology and performance at a more accessible price point.

Cons

  • Volume changes produce an audible click between steps that some listeners may find distracting.
  • Limited connectivity: single-ended RCA only (no balanced XLR), which constrains integration in some high-end systems.

Transparency

91/100

Reviewers describe a low noise floor and improved dynamic range from CJD's parts ("lower noise floor") and the spec lists hum/noise at 100 dB below 2.5 V — indicating very low background noise. The unit is tube-based and characterized as "warmer side of neutral," so while it reveals fine detail and gets out of the way musically, a slight euphonic coloration is intentional; overall transparency is excellent but not absolutely clinical.

Sound Quality

92/100

Dynamics

92/100

Review mentions the CJD Teflon caps and modern design delivering "a new level of bass extension, dynamic range and lower noise floor," and listeners reported preserved micro/macro dynamics. The ET7-S2 is described as lively and capable of punch and control, so dynamics are strong.

Soundstage Imaging

92/100

ToneAudio highlights impressive soundstaging with musical elements extending around the speakers and good front-to-back placement ("Vocals reach forward into the room"). Imaging precision and depth are singled out, supporting a high score for spatial performance.

Build Quality

89/100

The ET7 is described as a hefty, well-built component (19 lb, rack-friendly dimensions) with a nicely anodized matching remote; construction appears solid and refined. No mention of dual-mono topology, stepped attenuator, or external PSU was found, so build is excellent but not demonstrably ultra-luxury or exotic.

Features Connectivity

83/100

The unit is single-ended only with RCA connectors (five labeled inputs, two main outs) and includes a remote; extra outputs are noted as handy for adding subwoofers. The lack of balanced XLR connections or integrated digital/phono stages limits the features tally, placing it in the 'basic with useful extras' range.

Value for Money

96/100

ToneAudio explicitly calls the ET7 an "exceptional value," saying it "can approach flagship performance at half the price" and comparing favorably to prior flagship-level Conrad-Johnson designs, and cites a historical benchmark (ACT2 at $13,500) to frame the ET7's pricing. Given the reviewer's strong praise and comparison to higher-tier designs, the unit earns top-tier value marks in its segment.
