Chord Electronics ULTIMA 5
ULTIMA 5 is a progression of our most famous stereo power amplifier, the legendary SPM 1200 MK II (widely considered to be the definitive Chord Electronics amplifier).
Now incorporating our latest-generation ULTIMA circuit topology, the new ULTIMA 5 is set to become a future classic. Considered to offer the ideal balance between performance and price, the ULTIMA 5 offers an impressively affordable 300 watts – enough to drive all but the most demanding loudspeakers.
The ULTIMA 5 has built upon the inherent strengths of the SPM 1200 MK II and taken performance to the next level. By implementing our advanced dual-feed-forward error-correction, topology incorporating our own advanced concepts in ultra-high-frequency power supplies, we have been able to deliver supremely fast and powerful performance, with an extraordinarily high peak output current (the speed at which dynamic peaks can be delivered), bringing astonishing dynamics, timing accuracy and, as a result, unrivaled musicality.
Add to that our low-distortion amplifier circuitry with our own proprietary lateral-structure dual-die MOSFETs and the ULTIMA 5 is able to drive loudspeaker loads effortlessly, with clarity and precision. The ULTIMA 5 has an incredible 32 proprietary MOSFET power devices which demand the most advanced and refined drive circuitry, suitably devoid of sound-degrading components.
ULTIMA is a truly unprecedented amplifier topology with exceptional performance and is one of the most advanced amplifier technologies in the world.
Benefiting from a redesigned fascia featuring John Franks’ latest aesthetic, the precision CNC-machined fascia is made from aircraft-grade aluminium and features a reassuringly solid 28-mm thick front panel, enhanced by a recessed spherical polycarbonate power button that illuminates for standby and operation modes; a discreet, hidden front panel switch, located in the vertical split line, enables dimmable lighting.
The amplifier’s rear panels contain both balanced and unbalanced connections, high-quality loudspeaker terminals, a 12 V trigger and a C-19-type IEC.

Chord Electronics ULTIMA 5 — class-leading clarity and control
The ULTIMA 5 stakes its claim as a high-end stereo power amplifier built for exceptional transparency and authority. Reviewers such as What Hi‑Fi? and Audiophilepure highlight its ability to resolve low-level detail, deliver a huge, layered stereo image and remain composed at very high volumes. Sonically it is taut and analytical—detailed treble, natural midrange body and commanding dynamics driven by 64 MOSFET outputs and 300W/8Ω (500W/4Ω). The immaculately machined aluminium chassis, LED styling and substantial thermal design echo the amp’s engineering ambition. Ideal for reference systems and listeners who want forensic insight across genres, the ULTIMA 5 is a compelling choice for those prioritising clarity, imaging and uncoloured power delivery.
Pros
- Exceptional transparency and low-level detail resolution, making it easy to hear subtle textures and micro-information in recordings.
- Huge, open stereo image with crisp layering and precise imaging that places instruments convincingly across the soundstage.
- Impressive dynamics and headroom—remains composed under demanding passages thanks to its high power delivery and MOSFET output stage.
- Premium build and distinctive visual design: machined 28mm aluminium front, robust heatsinking and bold styling that match its engineering pedigree.
&
Cons
- Can deliver less low-end punch or rhythmic weight than some rivals—may not satisfy listeners seeking extra bass heft.
- Taut, highly analytical presentation is not overtly coloured or ‘lush’, so listeners preferring a warm, characterful tone may find it austere.

Dynamics
93/100
Reviewers repeatedly praise the Ultima 5's effortless power and headroom: What Hi‑Fi notes the claimed power is believable when it "pounds out Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture" and that there is "never a hint of sonic stress." The 300W/8Ω (500W/4Ω) specification and use of 64 MOSFET outputs supports the impression of strong current delivery and authority, while a small caveat that some rivals trade more low-end punch keeps this just under absolute reference level.
Soundstage Imaging
92/100
Reviewers highlight a huge, open stereo image with crisply focused, layered sounds and excellent ability to track low‑level instrumental strands (What Hi‑Fi: "sets up a huge, open stereo image" and "outstanding" at hearing deep into the mix). The presentation is precise and stable under demanding passages, earning a top-tier imaging score with only minor deduction for not being described as hyper‑exuberant.

Build Quality
94/100
Construction and engineering are lauded: What Hi‑Fi describes an "immaculately crafted 28mm thick slab of aircraft‑grade aluminium" front panel, substantial heatsinking (rear panel doubles as heatsink) and overall premium casework that "oozes quality." The solid 22.4kg chassis and thoughtful thermal design support a high build rating; it is a stereo chassis rather than monoblocks, which is fully in line with the product intent.
Value for Money
89/100
Although the Ultima 5 sits at a high price point (~£16k), reviewers explicitly say performance makes the asking price "look as if entirely reasonable" (Audiophilepure) and What Hi‑Fi accepts the elevated price given the construction and performance. This is positive value language that supports a justified‑premium score rather than a neutral baseline.
