Cayin N3Ultra
The Beauty of Simplicity
Vintage Tubes, Cutting-edge Sound
The N3Ultra uses a fully-customized operating system that
streamlining to focus solely on audio application.
Creating a device that provides an authentic and minimalist
experience, allowing users to enjoy the new auditory pleasure
brought by the vintage JAN6418 vacuum tubes.
Military-grade NOS Tubes
Applicable to All Analog Outputs
Shock Absorber and Suspension
In-house developed mechanical and
circuitry upgrades minimize microphonic effects
Classic│Modern│Solid-State
Up to Three Timbres in All Analog Outputs
Instead of using the miniature pentode tube as an audio buffer,
N3Ultra adopts Cayin’s Gen3 vacuum tube technology and
employed a two stage timbre circuit for JAN6418:
First Stage: connect the JAN6418 as a low gain voltage amplifier
Second Stage: a FET buffer is added to improve the driving capability
of the timbre circuit
By varying the connection method of the screen grid of the
pentode tube, the JAN6418 incorporates local NFB through
the screen grid, resulting in two distinct styles of circuit
response, distortion, and output impedance.

Cayin N3Ultra — Focused DAP for fidelity
Cayin's N3Ultra concentrates on musicality through a locked-down Android build that prioritizes playback integrity. Its standout quality is the ability to deliver bit-perfect playback via a stripped-down OS, producing vivid resolution, natural tonality and convincing dynamics. The sonic balance is detailed across bass, midrange and treble with a clean, well-defined soundstage.
Performance benefits from tight software/hardware integration: a responsive 4.1-inch TFT touchscreen, a capacitive home button that indicates sample rate, and a playback pipeline tuned for low noise and refined resolution. As noted by Audiophilepure, the UI snappiness exceeds expectations despite modest Snapdragon 425 internals. Suited to high-resolution collectors and IEM users, the N3Ultra delivers focused, high-end sound and a polished UX at about $529.
Pros
- Locked-down, bit-perfect Android implementation yields highly resolved, tonally accurate playback.
- Exceptionally responsive UI and touchscreen performance that outpace expectations for its Snapdragon 425 / 2GB RAM hardware.
- Thoughtful hardware/software integration — sample-rate LED indicator and a quiet playback chain contributing to refined presentation.
&
Cons
- No networking or third-party app support, which removes native streaming service access and limits platform flexibility.
- Modest internal SoC and RAM may limit future feature expansion or appeal to users who want an app-centric DAP.
Sound Quality
88/100
While not heavily detailed on transient tests, the review credits the optimized playback pipeline and OS-level focus as contributing to lifelike, highly resolved presentation, implying strong micro- and macro-dynamics. Given the positive comments about overall sound realism but limited explicit stress-testing with hard-to-drive cans, a high but measured dynamics score is assigned.
Noise Floor
84/100
The review makes no mention of audible hiss or background noise and focuses on bit-perfect playback and sound clarity; absent any reports of hiss, the unit is judged 'very quiet' and suitable for most IEMs. Without explicit 'black background' phrasing, the score stays in the very-quiet band rather than reference-level silence.
Headphone Compatibility
82/100
The review does not provide technical output-impedance or power figures nor extensive headphone burn-in/driving tests; however, as a modern DAP with an optimized playback chain it should handle a wide range of efficient to medium-impedance headphones. Due to lack of explicit power/impedance specs and limited testing with power-hungry planars, compatibility is rated as good but not exemplary.
Build Quality
90/100
Reviewer praises the responsive 4.1-inch TFT touchscreen, snappy UI despite modest SoC/RAM, and the thoughtful hardware/software integration (including a capacitive home button that doubles as a sample-rate indicator). Those positive hardware/UI integration comments justify a strong build-quality score, while the absence of long-term durability notes tempers it slightly below ultra-high-end reference levels.
Features Connectivity
83/100
The review highlights a stripped-down Android OS that enables bit-perfect playback (implying a built-in DAC and careful digital path), a responsive touchscreen UI, and a sample-rate LED indicator. Because explicit connectivity details (balanced outputs, USB/optical ports, gain stages) are not stated, the score sits modestly above the minimal baseline to reflect the confirmed DAC/bit-perfect implementation and polished UI.
Value for Money
86/100
The review does not discuss price or value explicitly; per guidance, a neutral baseline is applied. Given the clear emphasis on sound-focused software/hardware design and polished UX at the listed ~$529 price point, the score remains a neutral-to-positive assessment in the absence of comparative pricing commentary.
