Bi-Wire Capable

Our largest center-channel speaker is designed to partner the 801 D4 and 802 D4. A powerful performer, it has both the scale and the midrange extension to perfectly match the quality of its illustrious stablemates. *Stand(s) not included.

At the center of it all

The center-channel speaker is arguably the most important in home theater – and the HTM81 D4 has an enviable array of advanced technologies to reinforce that point, including Solid Body tweeter-on-top, a decoupled Continuum™ Cone midrange drive unit and twin 200mm (8-in) Aerofoil™ bass cones.

Aerofoil bass cone

Our Aerofoil bass cone technology remains an outstanding solution to the conundrum of combining low mass and high stiffness in bass cones, thanks to its carbon-fiber skin and variable-profile foam core. Now, we have added the foam Anti-Resonance Plug for lower distortion and even cleaner bass.

Diamond dome tweeter

One of our most significant accomplishments over the past two decades, the ultra-stiff, supremely accurate Diamond dome tweeter is the perfect combination of low mass, exceptional stiffness and outstanding accuracy. 15 years after we introduced it, we haven’t found a better tweeter dome technology.

Aluminum bass pods

HTM81 D4 mounts two Aerofoil bass cones in twin solid aluminum bass pods, each of which is clamped into an aluminum plate fixed to the stiffest part of its curved cabinet. Formed as single pieces of metal, these stiff structures provide the perfect mechanical location for those powerful bass cones.

The science of sound

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We question, we examine, we understand and then we evolve. We use computer modelling to explore and reimagine every aspect of loudspeaker design. Learn more about all the technologies that combine to make 800 Series Diamond so special here.

Bowers & Wilkins HTM81 D4 — flagship center with blockbuster bass and boutique build

The HTM81 D4 puts Bowers & Wilkins' flagship technologies into a single, heavy-duty center channel that delivers deep, controlled bass, high dynamic headroom and unmistakable premium craftsmanship. Twin 200mm Aerofoil woofers and a vented 3-way layout give genuine low-end extension (F10 ~32Hz) and the measured dynamics and low distortion mean it can play loud with authority.

Sonically the speaker is mixed: the midband is forward and present — voices and instruments are intimate and upfront — while the treble shows a pronounced 3–5dB lift that some listeners will find bright or fatiguing. Imaging is serviceable for center-channel duties, but the reviewer notes uneven horizontal radiation and some vertical lobing that can affect tonal balance in untreated rooms.

Build and fit are class-leading: heavy cabinet, turbine/diamond tweeter-on-top and B&W innovations (Matrix, Anti-Resonance plug, Continuum midrange) create a resonance-free enclosure that looks the part in premium systems. Ideal for home-theater rigs where dialogue clarity, slam and refinement are priorities — provided you pair it with a subwoofer and consider room/sidewall treatment to tame the top-end and midband quirks.

Erin's Audio Corner

"The treble is 3-5dB higher than the midrange which yields an extremely unbalanced and - in my opinion - unnatural sound."

Pros

  • Powerful, low-distortion bass and strong dynamics — twin Aerofoil woofers deliver deep extension and high headroom.
  • Flagship-level build and components — Diamond tweeter, Matrix bracing and a heavy, resonance-free cabinet show premium craftsmanship.
  • Low measured distortion and wide recommended amplifier range give excellent transient control and practical headroom for home-theater use.

&

Cons

  • Pronounced treble bump (~3–5dB) that many listeners will find fatiguing or unbalanced.
  • Midrange coloration (peak near ~1kHz) and uneven horizontal radiation/vertical lobing can make vocals sound forward and imaging less stable without room treatment.

Sound Quality

79/100

Bass

91/100

Dual 200mm Aerofoil woofers and measured F10 = 32Hz give genuinely deep extension for its size; reviewer notes it "can get loud and low" but "would still benefit from a subwoofer." Given driver size and vented-box design this is excellent bass performance for its class, though not quite reference-level.

Mid

76/100

Midrange shows a pronounced ~1kHz peak that makes voices and instruments sound very forward, per the review. Clarity and presence are strong, but the coloration/peak reduces natural timbre and neutrality.

Treble

70/100

Review reports a 3–5dB treble bump above midrange producing an unbalanced, fatiguing top end. Despite a 25mm diamond dome tweeter and solid-body tweeter-on-top hardware, measured response linearity in the treble is poor and tiring.

Soundstage Imaging

68/100

As a center channel the horizontal radiation is uneven (comb-filtering ~400–600Hz vs 1–3kHz) and the reviewer warns of poor horizontal radiation without sidewall absorption. Vertical lobing between 3–5kHz also reduces image stability.

Dynamics

88/100

Measured distortion/compression figures look favorable and the speaker is capable of high, low-distortion output; recommended amp range (50–500W) supports strong macro dynamics and headroom when paired with appropriate electronics.

Build Quality

92/100

Heavy, well-built enclosure with B&W flagship technologies (Diamond tweeter, Aerofoil cones, Matrix, Anti-Resonance plug) and reviewer notes the enclosure appears free of resonance. Craftsmanship and premium parts are apparent.

Features Connectivity

80/100

Passive baseline applied. Typical passive single-post center speaker configuration; no DSP/app/streaming expected or penalized.

Value for Money

65/100

At an MSRP around $9,500–$10,500 this is a high-end, expensive center channel. Review highlights sonic imbalances (mid/treble peaks) without praising price-relative value, so it doesn't present as a clear value bargain versus peers.
