Massive Power Output, Simplified
Balanced Audio Technology’s flagship solid-state power amplifier, REX 500, represents the culmination of the company’s decades-long pursuit of sonic and engineering excellence. Victor Khomenko, BAT’s chief designer, observes that the unit’s massive power output is largely academic. “BAT has never designed for power alone, and I am most proud of the elegant simplicity in how the REX 500 delivers that power,” he says. For those who demand numbers, the stereo REX 500 produces 500 watts/channel into eight ohms and 1000 watts/channel into four ohms. In mono configuration, let’s just say that the power is more than adequate.
The Benefits of a Purist Approach
A true dual-mono design with independent channel assemblies, power transformers, and separate power cables for the left and right channels, REX 500 adheres to a purist approach that offers benefits in the forms of soundstaging, depth, dynamics, and insight. The gain stages of REX 500 feature the highest current delivery ever achieved in a Balanced Audio Technology design. REX 500 also employs a new power supply topology (Push SuperPak) and the largest SuperPak (as measured by energy storage) of any product in BAT history.
Fuseless Protection Circuit
REX 500 incorporates a new protection circuit that eliminates the need to replace internal fuses. Many of us have dropped a needle on a record with the volume set too high or inadvertently shorted speaker leads when changing speaker cables. If you make a mistake, you can reset REX 500 by pressing a rear-panel button. That’s it. The elimination of internal fuses also permits REX 500 to handle higher currents without impeding the circuit's operation. Indeed, the best-sounding fuse is no fuse at all.
“The BAT REX 500 walks that happy line between reticence and bombast, giving preference to neither and varnishing nothing. It doesn't insert its own drama, but it renders sound that's both dramatic and refined... The REX 500 has superb articulation and slam, zero glare, grip that could embarrass a bench vice, and as much truthfulness as the best power amplifiers I’ve heard. It’s good to be king.”

Only Two Gain Stages
REX 500’s elegant signal path follows the Balanced Audio Technology purist approach of using zero global feedback to achieve the goals of wide bandwidth and circuit linearity. The entire amplifier circuit consists of just two gain blocks. Though the theoretical ideal for any power amplifier is to have only one gain block, that has only been achieved in amplifiers with low power output. Bypassing that limitation, REX 500 — fully balanced from input to output — is at the zenith of simplicity in modern high-power amplifier design.
–Paul Miller
“On offer are unburstable power, rich tonality, fine detail and sublime soundstaging, making music listening an utter joy. The REX 500 is amplifier royalty, and surely ranks as one of the very best at its price – or above.”

N-Channel MOSFET Devices
REX 500’s circuit is entirely based on N-Channel MOSFET devices. Though high-power amplifiers traditionally use complementary N- and P-Channel devices in the output stage, they suffer from a crucial drawback: P-Channel devices are inherently inferior to their N-Channel brethren. You will never get perfect symmetry when using devices with such a wide speed discrepancy. In REX 500, both sides of the waveform are handled by identical devices in identical circuit configuration.
Intelligent Upgradability
BAT provides a transparent upgrade path that allows the owner of a stereo REX 500 to easily convert it to a monoblock at any point. With REX 500, the user can change their existing REX 500 to a monoblock and then order a second REX 500 to match. The added current delivery makes the sound of the REX 500 monoblocks effortless – and more akin to that of a master tape.
Statement-Making Solid-State
From its extraordinary power delivery to the peace of mind provided by the elimination of fuses, REX 500 stands as the pinnacle of BAT solid-state design. Add to that the simplicity of a circuit that features only two gain blocks, zero feedback, and the pure symmetry afforded by using only superior N-Channel devices for amplification, and you can understand why this statement product is unique.

Balanced Audio Technology – BAT REX 500 Power Amplifier
The REX 500 is BAT's flagship solid-state statement: a 500W-per-channel (optionally 1kW mono) powerhouse that pairs massive headroom with a notably musical, tube-like character. Reviewers such as Mark Craven and Audiophilepure highlight its huge soundstage, holographic imaging and lush midrange, underpinned by tight, controlled bass and exceptional transient authority from its high-current MOSFET topology and oversized power supply. The true dual-mono chassis, twin IEC feeds and fuseless protection reflect industrial-grade construction, though the 140 lb enclosure and elevated idle power/thermal footprint mean installation and ventilation need planning. Ideal for owners of large, demanding loudspeakers who want scale, control and musical engagement, the REX 500 stakes a convincing claim as a performance-driven flagship.
Pros
- Extraordinary dynamics and headroom — delivers unburstable power and firm speaker control suitable for demanding floorstanders.
- Wide, holographic soundstage with precise imaging — places vocalists and instruments with notable scale and depth.
- Robust engineering and dual-mono construction — true dual power supplies, twin IEC feeds and fuseless protection underline premium build quality.
&
Cons
- Very heavy and thermally demanding — 140 lb chassis, high running temperature and significant idle power draw require careful placement and ventilation.
- Limited input flexibility — balanced XLR inputs only, which may require an active line stage or specific preamp for some systems.
- Can sound slightly brash with very aggressive, overdriven material — a small number of loud, pushed tracks showed a hint of edge.

Dynamics
94/100
Reviewers repeatedly praise the REX 500's unburstable power, current delivery and headroom; HiFi News notes 'unburstable power' and 'power and attack, effortless detail', while Audiophilepure highlights the amp's lively current delivery. The 500W/1000W rating, large power supply (3000W full power draw) and MOSFET high-current driver design support exceptional transient authority and speaker control, and reviewers report it keeps the Perlisten S7t LE 'on a tight leash.'
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
Consistent comments about a huge, holographic soundstage and stable, seamless imaging ('vocalists placed along a wide, deep stage', 'imaging between them was seamless'). Reviewers describe strong spatial scale and depth on both orchestral and modern material, and the amp preserves imaging even while delivering significant power.

Build Quality
92/100
Heavy, well-built chassis (140 lb) with true dual-mono topology and twin IEC sockets for separate PSUs; HiFi News calls it 'a premium amp that's been very well put together.' The large power consumption, wide bandwidth, high slew rate and fuseless protection/robust power supply design all underline high-quality engineering and thermal/power management.
Value for Money
90/100
At US$25,000 (reviewed at £22,500), reviewers position the REX 500 as BAT's flagship and state it 'ranks as one of the very best at its price – or above' and 'amplifier royalty,' implying the performance justifies the premium. Given the 500W/1000W output, dual-mono construction and the high-end sonic results reported, reviewers frame this as a justified premium purchase in its competitive segment.
