"The AVM Rotation R 5.3 is a robust sounding turntable that in many ways has much to offer but still, in my opinion, struggles to reach the overall performance of many colleagues. As soon as the stylus hits the groove, you are immediately aware of its big, solid sound, so this is not one of those feeble, anemic performers that you have to convince yourself that they sound confident. Instead, it is broad-shouldered, barrel-chested and wears big boots – metaphorically speaking of course. It plays LP records in a straightforward, powerful and carefree way, albeit without some of the finesse and artistry that price rivals demonstrate. This makes it rather more suited to some types of music over others, the former including the Soul/Funk strands of The Dukes ‘So Much In Love’ [from Bugatti & Musker; WEA K58479], where it took the bull by the horns and radiated an expansive, bold sound with lots of detail and a crisp, spacious treble. The bass of this deck is something that really hits you because it’s a bit on the full side, which gives a deep and powerful feeling for the bass guitar work. In fact, at high volumes, the back of your chest can become as important as your ears in the overall listening experience."

"The AVM Rotation R 5.3 turntable is more than just a successful marketing gag. The inner values of the Rotation R 5.3 undoubtedly show how many high-end genes AVM has implanted in its first turntable. Udo Besser, the managing director of AVM, had already indicated years ago: After the successful development and market launch of amplifiers and digital devices, AVM would also like to make its own contribution to the revived market success of the vinyl record. What at first sounded like just a vision, a pipe dream of the AVM owner and managing director, has become reality with the Rotation R 2.3 and the Rotation R 5.3. The larger of the two, which is the subject of this test report, has a 10-inch tonearm developed by AVM, which is cardanically mounted. The turntable is controlled by an "elipso-centric" belt drive."

"AVM has quickly established itself as a supplier of vinyl drives. Two models adorn the catalog, the larger of which, the R 5.3, was tested. The turntable impresses with its design and technical details. The R 5.3 offers great dynamics and fine details in the sound. The workmanship could hardly be better and more beautiful, and the tonearm is sure to delight every vinyl fan. The R 5.3 sets no limits in its platform and fulfills the dream of many vinyl lovers."

"The Cellini turntable from AVM, named after the Renaissance universal talent Benvenuto Cellini, is the result of five years of development. The turntable is not only visually appealing, but also meets audiophile, "high-end" sound requirements and is extremely flexible with regard to pickups. The Cellini comes with a pre-assembled 10-inch tonearm and a larger chassis to accommodate the longer tonearm. The chassis is made of HDF composite and glued with thick aluminum plates, which results in a particularly resonance-free body. The turntable produces a deep black "background" that favors differentiated, subtle dynamic development. The Cellini builds the sound from sheer authority and remains as if concreted even with massive orchestra use."

"The AVM R 5.3 turntable is a construction that bears the signature of Udo Besser. This is particularly evident on the 10-inch tonearm made of polished aluminum; a beautiful, custom design conceived down to the last detail by him. The tonearm is considered "medium-heavy", so it should get along splendidly with almost all pickups in the world, and the drive itself belongs to the species of "mass turntables". The finely processed aluminum envelops a five centimeter thick block of HDF (high-density fiber), in combination they want to put an end to unwanted resonances. Precision and knowledge of material properties are the natural enemies of sound-damaging resonances. The drive with force-equalizing deflection roller appears "perfect" and simply clever. Absolutely speaking, I don't know of any turntable under 20,000 euros that plays as gripping, dynamically fascinating, ultra-precise, lively, emotionally gratifying, heart-wrenching as this AVM. This 5.3 did not reproduce like a typical belt driver, even the hardest piano strikes on the edge of the groove were reproduced so authentically that the illusion of a grand piano actually placed in the room arose."
