View at Audio Research

The VT80SE was created as a flexible, great-sounding amplifier that is easy to enjoy and easy to live with, every day. A direct descendant of our Reference amplifiers that borrows from their acclaimed designs and using many of their parts, the VT80SE sounds like a much larger amplifier with impressive dynamics, control, and resolution.

A fully-balanced design

A fully-balanced design that uses only two pairs of KT150 output tubes, it can be connected via balanced or single-ended inputs. Operation is carefree; simply drop in the tubes and the VT80SE’s proprietary circuit automatically adjusts for tube wear or powerline fluctuations in real time, making the occasional bias adjustment a thing of the past.

It also works with other common output tubes like the 6550, KT88 or the KT120. Each output tube is fused, so there are no worries, all you have to do is turn it on and enjoy the music.

The VT80SE will be a revelation in your system. Its natural clarity, coupled to its intoxicating tonal palette and sheer dynamic swing, will bring your music to life.

After more than 50 years, our focus remains the advancement of the state-of-the-art in music reproduction. Every component is meticulously hand-crafted and personally auditioned before it leaves our Minnesota facility.

Our attention to detail, customer service, and product support create unprecedented value. An Audio Research component is more than a purchase, it is an investment.

Audio Research VT80 SE

The VT80 SE pairs Audio Research's KT150 output tubes with a refined output stage to deliver a blooming, three‑dimensional soundstage and lively transient slam. Reviewers from Glenn Young, SoundStage Solo and Audiophilepure singled out its combination of imaging, micro/macro dynamics and tonal richness. The signature blends a sweet, present midrange and airy treble with taut—but sometimes slightly restrained—bass that benefits from careful speaker matching or a subwoofer. Practical engineering—auto‑bias, individual tube fuses, balanced/XLR and RCA inputs, 4Ω/8Ω taps and RS‑232/12V trigger—pairs with the hand-built chassis for long-term reliability. Ideal for audiophiles seeking a musically engaging tube sound that elevates staging and dynamics, the VT80 SE stands out as a compelling 75W per‑channel performer and a strong value for listeners who value musicality and build quality. Exceptional soundstage and dynamic expression.

SoundStage! Australia

"There’s more music, tonal colour, detail, dynamic swing and purity along with a bigger and more robust presentation. The music gets better, in every way."

Pros

  • Exceptionally wide, three‑dimensional soundstage and precise imaging that brings recordings to life.
  • Strong micro‑ and macro‑dynamics with fast transients thanks to the KT150 output tubes, giving impactful musical attack and drive.
  • Stellar build and owner‑friendly engineering—auto‑bias, individual tube fuses and robust packaging—designed for long service life and easy maintenance.
  • Practical connectivity and integration features (balanced/XLR and RCA inputs, 4Ω/8Ω taps, RS‑232 and 12V trigger) simplify system matching.

Cons

  • Bass can be a touch restrained with some speaker pairings and may benefit from room placement adjustments or use of a subwoofer.
  • A few reviewers reported a low‑level ground hum when using grounded 4Ω taps or speaker systems with common grounding; wiring must be checked during setup.

Dynamics

91/100

This KT150-equipped tube amp is repeatedly praised for lightning-fast transients, strong micro- and macro-dynamics and a more robust presentation versus the KT120 iteration (reviews: "lightning-fast transients", "more music... dynamic swing"). As a 75 Wpc tube design it sits in the higher end of the tube dynamics band; despite the spec'd low damping factor (~8) the reviewers consistently report authoritative, energetic delivery and substantial headroom for typical two-channel listening. Minor caveats: a few listeners noted slightly lighter bass versus some solid-state or alternative tubes, but overall the VT80SE is described as dynamically engaging and importantly improved over its predecessor.

Soundstage Imaging

93/100

Multiple reviewers singled out the VT80SE's exceptional soundstaging: "holographic soundstage", "absolute bloom", and "immense in size" — with HomeTheaterHifi calling it the best soundstage they've heard from an Audio Research product. The unit's excellent channel separation (spec'd 112 dB) and reviewers' descriptions of three-dimensional placement and imaging precision support a high score here.

Build Quality

90/100

Construction and component quality receive strong praise ("stellar construction", robust packaging, careful KT150 implementation and auto-bias circuitry). Audio Research's use of matched KT150 pairs and 6H30 drivers plus robust mechanical design and expected good resale value support this score. Negative notes are limited but real: one reviewer reported low-level ground hum with some 4 Ω speaker connections and tube designs introduce channel-to-channel variability inherent to valves.

Value for Money

89/100

Reviewers explicitly state the VT80SE justifies its asking price (HomeTheaterHifi: "justifies its existence and $9,500 cost") and SoundStage lists AU$13,995; that endorsement is given in the context of the amplifier's 75 watts per channel output, upgraded KT150 tubes versus the KT120 predecessor, and high build/resale expectations. For buyers who value tube tonal character, improved dynamics and exceptional staging at 75 Wpc, reviewers feel the premium is warranted; those seeking raw high-current solid-state power for very difficult/low-impedance speaker loads should compare alternatives, but within its tube/stage-oriented peer group the VT80SE is judged a justified premium purchase.
