Audio Research Reference Phono 3SE
When Audio Research was founded in 1970, analog vinyl playback was the de facto music source of the time. Audio Research has built phono playback into preamplifiers or created stand-alone phono stages since the very beginning.
The knowledge gained in the creation of Audio Research’s latest award-winning Reference-series amplifiers has transitioned to both the Reference 6SE line-stage and the Reference Phono 3SE, elevating its performance dramatically. Ultra-high quality parts and design details usher in a new level of sonic accuracy and musicality.
The improvements in the latest REF Phono 3SE include enhanced resolution at all levels, greater purity and focus, improved transient speed and snap, and better dynamic. shading. The sum of these improvements is exceptional, further breaking down the barrier between reproduced sound and the immediacy of a live event.
The vacuum-tube audio stage utilizes six 6H30 vacuum tubes (three per channel), while a 6H30 and a 6550 provide partial tube regulation in the power supply.
The large, vacuum fluorescent display on the front panel shows all functions relative to the selected input. A row of six buttons controls power, mute, input, and menu controls.
Two inputs provide connectivity to two turntables or tonearms, with independent settings for each input. Other features include variable display brightness, an IR input, tube hour meter, and both balanced and single-ended outputs.

Audio Research Reference Phono 3SE
The Audio Research Reference Phono 3SE is a flagship phono stage that combines tube warmth with razor-sharp retrieval to deliver an open, highly detailed presentation. Reviewers from HiFi News and Mark Pearson highlight its very low noise floor, expansive soundstaging and lifelike midrange presence. Its sonic signature balances taut, extended bass, textured mids and airy treble with strong micro- and macro-dynamics. Design and engineering are flagship-class: fully regulated power supplies, an all-tube complement and comprehensive loading/gain options (dual inputs, selectable MC/MM loads and high/low gain). Ideal for vinyl enthusiasts who run multiple cartridges or seek reference-level replay, the Reference Phono 3SE pairs technical refinement with musicality. With its combination of exceptional transparency, dynamic authority and flexible connectivity, it rewards high-resolution turntable systems and critical listeners.
Pros
- Extremely low noise and outstanding transparency, revealing low‑level detail and ambience.
- Powerful micro and macro dynamics that give records palpable energy and realistic transient snap.
- Highly flexible cartridge support with two independently configurable inputs, multiple loading options and clear gain staging for MM and MC users.
&
Cons
- Runs warm in use and requires adequate clearance/ventilation to avoid overheating.
- Heavy, substantial chassis can make placement and handling awkward in smaller racks.
Transparency
95/100
Multiple reviewers praised an extremely quiet, open presentation and exceptional retrieval of low-level detail (HiFi News: "one of the most precise, quiet, open and dynamic phono stages I have ever used"; Audiophilepure: "startling" presence attributed to the very low-level signals). The published noise specs (0.082 µV equivalent input noise at high gain; 0.28 µV IHF weighted shorted low-gain) corroborate the reviewers' impressions and justify a reference-level Transparency rating despite tube topology.
Sound Quality
93/100
Dynamics were highlighted repeatedly: HiFi News described energy as "as palpable as moving from a 60W stereo amp to a brace of 300W monsters," and reviewers noted no loss of dynamics even with high-output MCs. Transient punch and macro dynamic capability are strong, lending life and momentum to records.
Cartridge Compatibility
95/100
Full MM/MC support with selectable Low/High gain, multiple MC load values (1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 ohms and custom), selectable 47k/100pF for MM, and independently configurable dual inputs (accepting two cartridges simultaneously) — reviewers emphasize flexibility and lack of preference between MM and MC. This breadth of loading and gain options makes it exceptionally versatile for modern cartridge pairings.
Build Quality
94/100
Robust construction and high-quality parts (components and wiring drawn from REF-series development) plus regulated power supplies and substantial chassis mass impressed reviewers ("looks more like an integrated amp than a phono stage"). Shielding, engineering and finish-level detail are consistent with flagship-class build.
Value for Money
87/100
Reviews focus on performance and reference-level sound but do not explicitly judge price; given the flagship $22,500 price and strongly positive performance commentary, a neutral-to-leaning-positive value assessment is appropriate. Reviewers praise what it delivers sonically but stop short of calling it a bargain, so a baseline/justified-premium score is used.
