Audio Research Reference 80S
The Reference 80S stereo amplifier continues Audio Research’s latest design effort in creating a vacuum-tube amplifier that not only redefines ultimate music reproduction, but does it in an incredibly beautiful package.
The 80S was created with as much spirited authority as we can pack into a compact circuit with 2 KT150 tubes per channel for music lovers who want Reference-level performance at the lowest possible barrier to entry.
Like every Reference amplifier before it, the 80S is a fully-balanced differential design, delivering the highest performance and lowest distortion. A four-layer circuit board is used to provide a separate ground plane, better circuit layout, and fewer noise-inducing point-to-point connections.
Music is projected against a quiet, jet-black background—like looking at the stars out in the country, removed from light pollution. It is magical and enveloping. The finest details are heard, with rich harmonics, incisive bass, and full dynamic contrasts, showcased with the ambience of the original acoustic space.
Outwardly, the 80S shares the same dimensions as the 160M. A single shallow whisper fan is built into the bottom plate. Flexibility is built-in, too, with XLR and SE inputs, 4-8-16 ohm output taps, 12V input and output triggers, RS232 input, tube hour meter, switchable fan speeds, and defeatable auto-off function.
The feature set is the same as the 160S, including a proprietary auto-bias circuit that adjusts for not only tube age, but for powerline voltage swings. There is fusing of the output tubes for safety and stability, single-ended and balanced inputs for flexibility, switchable Triode/Pentode operation – distinguished from the Triode/Ultralinear modes in the 160 models – to accommodate loudspeakers and personal preference, output tube monitoring, and inclusion of an hour meter. This is a tube amplifier that does not require fiddling and is meant to be enjoyed. The built-in 12V trigger turns the 80S on or off when connected to a modern preamp.
Built by hand, from the ground-up in our Maple Grove, Minnesota facility, the 80S can fool you into feeling you are in the presence of the musical performance. Whatever your reference speakers may be, whether they are from Wilson, Magnepan, Vandersteen, Focal, Sonus faber, B&W, or countless others: the Reference 80S will elevate their performance to a new plateau.

Audio Research Reference 80S
The Reference 80S distils Audio Research's Reference pedigree into a compact, high-performance stereo tube amplifier that couples the warmth and harmonic richness of tubes with remarkable clarity and control. Reviewers from HiFi News, HiFi Choice and Audiophilepure highlight its solid-state-like precision, wide, layered soundstage and muscular dynamics. The KT150/6H30 topology, switchable Triode/UltraLinear modes and auto-bias deliver tight, textured bass and impressive slam while preserving midrange nuance and vivid treble. Built by hand with heavy transformers, GhostMeters and comprehensive tube monitoring, it suits demanding speakers and serious music lovers seeking a refined, performance-first tube amp. Ideal for orchestral, rock and intimate acoustic recordings, the Reference 80S is presented as the most accessible gateway into ARC's Reference line while maintaining flagship-level engineering.
Pros
- Refined, transparent sound with remarkable detail and a solid-state-like precision while retaining tube warmth.
- Wide, deep and well-layered soundstage with precise instrument placement and natural imaging.
- Powerful dynamics and tight, textured bass with genuine slam—handles large orchestral and rock material with authority.
- Flagship-grade build and practical engineering: hand-assembled construction, auto-bias, tube monitoring and substantial transformers.

Cons
- Premium asking price places it out of reach for many buyers despite its performance.
- Speaker-tap and mode-specific behaviour (Triode vs UltraLinear; 4/8/16Ω taps) can be confusing—requires careful speaker matching for optimal power delivery.
- Start-up mute/warm-up period and a cooling fan mean the amp needs a few minutes and some attention to operation in regular use.

Dynamics
92/100
Multiple reviewers praise the REF80S's slam, authority and ability to drive difficult loads (reviewers note it delivers more power into tougher 4Ω loads via the 8Ω tap and has 'genuine slam' and 'no overhang'). The KT150 tube topology with switchable triode/ultra-linear operation and a large power supply delivers considerable headroom for a ~70–80W tube amp, and reviewers repeatedly cite its ability to marshal large orchestral forces. The spec shows a low damping factor (~8), but real-world testing and reviewers report excellent speaker control despite that, so a high dynamics score is justified.
Soundstage Imaging
93/100
Reviewers consistently report a wide, deep and well-layered soundstage: 'gloriously wide soundscape', precise instrument placement and airy detail are repeatedly mentioned. The amp maintains imaging stability and scale even under demanding orchestral material, producing a panoramic presentation that reviewers found impressive.

Build Quality
94/100
Hand-assembled, hand-wired construction, substantial chassis with extruded aluminium panels, large transformers and careful tube monitoring/auto-biasing are all documented by reviewers and the spec sheet. Features such as the auto-bias, tube hour meter, selectable fan and solid mechanical execution ('GhostMeters', robust finish) support a very high build-quality rating.
Value for Money
83/100
Reviewers frequently note the amp's premium price (~£14.9–15k / AU$24,995 quoted) and that it is out of reach for many; however they also call it the most accessible entry to Audio Research's Reference line and a compelling, well-built product. Judged relative to high-end peers and its 70–80W tube output, sentiment is mixed — impressive performance and pedigree but clearly a high-cost item — leading to a slight concern rather than a full endorsement of 'value for money'.
